David saw a blib suddenly blinking on his workstation, notifying him that the Captain was requesting his presence in his ready room.

David sighed. He had been sitting at his desk staring at the box that Jackson had given him, wondering when would be the appropriate time to open it. The sigh was merely an instinctual reaction, as he’d been staring at it with no rhyme or reason.

The message on his console jolted him slightly. Of course the Captain wanted to see him. Julien no doubt wanted to give David his own version of a reprimand, which for Julien would be more like a stern talking to.

David reached over and picked up the box, tucking it under his arm. Then moving to a particular spot on the wall he placed his palm flat upon the surface. The hidden palm reader he had placed there months ago scanned his hand and opened the secret compartment hidden in the wall. Inside this compartment David kept most of the futuristic technology that he had on his person when he was trapped in this timeline. A small pouch that contained a small amount of a particular dust. His tricorder from his own time. His comment badge. He had also placed the holo recorder with Jackson’s message on it here amongst his other futuristic items.

Reaching in, he took out the strange looking tricorder and slipped it into the pocket of his uniform jacket. Closing the compartment up once again he made his way out of the office and to the Captain’s ready room.

Ringing the chime, David cast one quick glance at the box tucked under his arm, before turning his attention towards the door, mentally preparing him for the hard love that was no doubt coming his way from a man he called not only Captain but also a close and dear friend.

Julien came in. He was uncharacteristically in civilian clothes. He gave a sad smile to David. “I have to tell you something. I’ve resigned from active duty. I need to be with La’kia when she gives birth to my daughter, and that can only happen on Earth. I’ve come to tell you that.” he said, his mismatched green eyes looked happy and sad at the same time.

David stood there, holding the strange box and futuristic tricorder in his hands. His mouth dropped open slightly and the surprise was clear on his face.

Sheepishly he moved his hands behind his back, concealing the items he held. Now was not the time.

“Captain, I… I don’t know what to say,” David stammered uncharacteristically. Obviously this was a shock to him. He took a moment to compose himself.

“Obviously you need to be with your family,” The CSO continued. “But… but....” He shook his head. “What can I even say?”

Then, as if a light bulb had just gone off in his brain, the man’s face became a look of worry and deep concern. “Dear gods, please tell me that Starfleet isn’t giving command of the Genesis to Marius?!?!”
