Leaving the Briefing Room, Riley ordered the turbolift down the two decks that separated them from Shuttlebay One.

“While I don’t want to overwhelm our hosts, I think two teams, heavy on science, will find the right balance. Lt. Thor, I’d like you to lead a team with Lts. Marishka and McGregor. Lt. Michaels, you’re with me. If you have a scientist from your department to assist Lt. Thor’s team that would be welcome. McGregor, a member of your department to assist my team would be equally welcome.”

Thomas nodded, and summoned NE Dan-O to the shuttlebay before moving closer to the CE.

As the turbolift doors opened, Riley knew there was a component missing from their away mission.

=/\=Dekker to Valleea, please report to Shuttlebay One for an away mission.=/\=

Dekker, CNS

Dagen did a slow circle around the shuttle and gave it a visual. The on board computer would do an automatic diagnostic on startup. What he could ‘see’ was limited but it made him feel a little more useful than standing about waiting to launch. He heard Dekker’s suggestions. They fit well inside the parameters of the previous recommendations by the Captain, though he figured he’d have a security grunt along and not the security chief. That was fine. As he finished his circuit he came to stand by MacGregor. Dagen was dressed in a standard away mission uniform with the ‘jacket’ over his tunic.

“You were on the first contact, right?” he asked him. “Any tips on what to expect or how to behave?” They had done a lot of monitoring of transmissions and had noted that they were still struggling with unity. Dagen had always thought that a world that was insular would struggle with that until they became a part of a greater whole like the Federation. There they were one of many, but they would feel more unified together in being a part of something larger. Dagen had always thought that was more a psychological thing culturally but it did seem to work.

“I was still over here,” Thomas reminded him. “But from the report I got back from the guards I got to send, expect to feel short and don’t expect much physical contact.”

“Keep your eyes and ears open,” Came the voice of the CSO, as he walked past the two men, heading towards Riley. As he passed, he uttered under his breath, barely audible, but if they’d been paying attention they might have been able to hear the words “And don’t trust them.”

“While Lt. Michaels is right to be cautious, they’ve given us no sign at this point that they are anything but welcoming and friendly. McGregor’s correct thought, they are tall. We were treated on their ship. They’re curious about us, but I sensed no deception on the part of their leaders.”

David moved next to Riley. “Thank you for coming with me.” He wished that he could elaborate more, but if anyone would trust that David was respecting the Temporal Prime Directive, it was Riley.

“I can pilot our shuttle if you need me to,” David added, giving Riley a sideways grin.

-David Michaels, CSO

COS

“Yes, you can take us down,” Riley agreed knowing David didn’t get as much opportunity to exercise his piloting skills as he’d like.

Dekker, CNS

OOC: Sage needs to be with one of the teams, doesn’t she?
OOC: Feel free to join Riley and David. I do not think anyone will mind. We’d be happy to have you.

OOC: The initial order was for the personnel from the last away team to join this one, which would mean Sage. Riley sent a comm to Valleea to join before your return to ensure a medical person on the away team. Linds hasn’t responded yet. I’m okay with both coming if Linds wants to join, or splitting the department so there’s med in both locations. Sage could certainly recommend leaving Sickbay in Valleea’s charge in her absence.

IC:
David looked over at Riley. “I promise to get us down there in one piece.” He said slyly, giving a wink.

-David Michaels, CSO

OOC: Did you want an engineer in each group? Chan is certainly available if you were thinking that way. :) .. Gene

OOC: Wouldn’t hurt. I’ll admit my non-scientific brain makes limited distinctions between engineers and scientists. Don’t judge me. :)
IC:

“When we were scanning their transmissions when you were on their ship they were singularly unaware of us as a whole. Only the governing body seemed to be aware - and their navy and defenses. I’m curious to how the rest of the people will take to us.” He shifted his neck in a circle as though to take the kinks of it. If they were tall he was going to have to be used to looking up a lot. Dagen was an optimistic sort, though tempered in the years by his experiences and that of the other hosts. What the CSO had said about not trusting them sent a tingle down his spine. He remembered an old holo that held a world that was visited by benign aliens who wanted only to help them. Even the aliens’ manifesto was benignly titled ‘To Serve’, though the world was too late when they had translated the rest where it had turned out to be a ‘cook book’ where the people were the main dish. That thought rolled through his head as he pondered what the CSO had said and what he had overheard. What were they precisely walking into? And was the paranoia of previous missions and contacts where things went wrong unfairly tainting his current thinking?

“Commander Decker, would Lt Chan be an asset in your team?” He asked before they boarded.
- Dagen, CE

Riley pondered the Chief Engineer’s question, “Lt. Chan is definitely an asset. If you don’t need her on the Genny in your absence, please request her presence.”

There were enough engineers on board to take care of things. Barring something being pulled out of the proverbial hat by their hosts they should be fine and really, even if there was, there were good solid engineers aboard. Dagen nodded and tapped his badge. =^= Lt Chan, there are two parties heading down to the world. I’m on one and it would be nice to have an engineer’s perspective on the other. Please report to the Shuttle Bay. You’ll be on Commander Decker’s team. =^=

=^= On my way=^= Came Chan reply.

Several minutes later Chan entered the shuttle bay. she had a phaser hooked to her belt and a tri-corder she was also carrying a tool kit. “Lieutenant Chan reporting as ordered” She said.

“Thought it would be nice to get out for a walk,” Dagen replied. Then, in a lower voice, he continued. “You have an eye for detail with your robotics skills. Every civilization but for ones in the old science fiction vids strove to be less and not bigger in their tech. I’m curious what you will see in their development that others will miss.” Those others included himself. Everyone had an ‘eye’ for something different and that made all eyes valuable.

The Counselor looked around the cavernous space of the shuttlebay as their away team assembled. Julien had pulled him into a secondary command role years ago and yet there had always been the CO or the XO to take up ultimate responsibility of an away team. With Julien’s departure and Marius’ expectedly unwelcome confinement to the Bridge, Riley felt a weight of responsibility he had managed to largely avoid. It was both exciting and foreboding.

At least his first chance to lead an away team was one of diplomatic and scientific discovery.

OOC: New arrivals to the away team can post their entrance here.

IC: “For those who were not a part of the away team aboard the Merry, welcome. The Pallasians have shown themselves to be hospitable, curious, and welcoming. I’ve sensed no subterfuge on the part of their leaders, and this remains a mission of first contact. We have been graciously invited to their homeworld to learn. As such our away team consists largely of scientists and engineers. As guests, we must respect the social norms of the world we are visiting. Air on the side of caution. And remember, we know very little of the people we are meeting. First contacts often come with background research, years of painstaking observation and evaluation. None of that has happened here. Do not assume the Pallasians are our foes, but neither assume they are our friends. Questions?”

Dekker, CNS

Dagen was good and looked toward Marishka and the Security chief. Between the two of them he would be well protected. This was going to be exciting and something new in Dagen’s experience, if not for past hosts. In that he would join their exalted ranks.
- Dagen, CE

Chan listened to Dekker she didn’t have nay questions but she knew she would be careful. After all she had no idea if everyone on the planet wanted first contact. However she hoped it would go smoothly.

Lieut Chan (Sub-DH Robotics)

Ben had sat down by the edge of the doors of the craft as a tactical maneuver to ensure crew safety from any potential ambush. If there was one, he’d be the first to snuff it out he thought.

Park

Not wanting to look like one standing about, Dagen headed into the shuttle, moving past Park, to sit in a second row ‘passenger’ set. He had become accustomed to this when the Genny was being constructed. Then, he had a shuttle or work-b pilot whose job it was to take him around on exterior surveys when the ship was at dock, and, sometimes, when they had taken her out when the impulse engines had been installed to gauge stress points along the skeleton. While he would have liked to have piloted some of those times, Dagen had to admit that his piloting skills were adequate but nothing to write home about.

Checking his gear, the Trill settled in. His was minimal, though he carried what he had in a satchel over his shoulder rather than on his belt. No sense advertising, he thought.
