Away Team Two

Posted Feb. 1, 2019, 6:15 p.m. by Lieutenant Thomas McGregor (COS) (Brandon Irvine)

Thomas tried to not give any reaction away, but he couldn’t help but quirk an eyebrow when the toughest-appearing person there was introduced as the minister of Agriculture.

He let Dagen take the lead, as this was nominally his team, and mission, to assess the Pallasian’s technology base. He looked around the landing site, trying to compare it to a shuttleport in San Francisco.

Dagen looked around him to take things in and to take a breath of the air. Everything still looked odd to him even so many worlds later and so many years out from Trill. Something other than a purple sky still just seemed ‘wrong’. He took another step to test the gravity as he strove to remember their hosts names. Thor would do better than he. “Minister Neibu, Secretary Neeker, Minister Nongfu. Thank you for hosting us. On behalf of the United Federation of Planets we are pleased to meet new friends in the galactic community.”

He turned to the others in introductions. “These are Lt’s Marishka, and McGregor. I am Lt Dagen Thor. Please just call me Thor. I am the chief engineer on board and,” he glanced at Yeeker, then Nongfu, with a smile. “and I am pleased to be shown about. I have found that no matter how different a people are one can always learn from another.” He did purposely not give the ‘roles’ of Marishka and McGregor. With a glance at Marishka he realized he had not talked with her about just how to introduce her. Saying outright that she was an Intelligence officer might not be the brightest. Honesty was always a good thing, though prudence stood together with it.

Neibu said, “Very pleased to meet you. We would like to show you around, to help you understand the people of Pallas. Would you like to move this way?”

He raised his arm to show the way. Like the other Pallasians present, his hands were covered with gloves.

Marishka understood why Thor hadn’t given her position during introductions. It was probably better that way for the moment.

Nodding, she prepared to walk with their hosts.

Dagen glanced about to his companions then followed Neibu. He wasn’t at a loss for questions related to their world. The trouble was that he was at a loss on what to ask that might night cause an issue. Dagen was a technical person and liked problem solving. To up and come out and ask about their problems was likely, well, a problem. “On my world, Trill, and Earth, as well as many other worlds,” he began, “it was a struggle around the point of pushing out into space. It was new and many thought that it wasn’t worth it, that the benefits weren’t there. I don’t know if you are having those growing pains, however I am hopeful that our meeting will allay many concerns that way.”

There, that was diplomatic Dagen. His curiosity got to him, however. “What are we seeing?” he asked with eagerness.

Thomas followed sedately, his long legs keeping the pace set by their lanky hosts without issue.

That’s question was innocuous enough, Thomas just hoped the reply wasn’t ‘a holding cell.’

COS

Marishka fell in step with Thomas. She thought Dagen’s question had been good, if not a bit obvious, and wondered if any of his past hosts had been diplomats. That would certainly be a boon here.

Neibu replied, “We will visit our power plants first. Then, we will visit the planetary university, a food plant and lastly a health facility.” They moved towards a rail system. “The power plant is about 7 minutes from here.”

The train that they were approaching looked very much like the mag rail system in 21st Century Japan.

GM

Power plants, university, food production and a hospital. All seemingly safe, and a quick way to get a gauge of where they were and what the Federation could provide via trade.

Thomas nodded at the train. It looked quite efficient and clean-powered. If it had been a coal or oil powered train, he would have been much more concerned that this society had a lot of progress yet to make.
