After getting properly acclimated with his surrounding Magnus made his way to the Bridge, it was time to get the formalities out of the way and get to know his new CO. Straightening out his uniform he moved to the right and pressed the Chime to the Captain’s ready Room and put his hands behind his back.

Magnus -XO

“Come,” came a bellow from behind the door. The doors seemed to be keyed to that word as they slid open when Marius called it out. Revealing the ready room, The room was had a number of boxes that carried knick knacks that would go on the walls or desks to give the room a more lived in feel, but for now it was mostly sparse. Marius toiled about hanging up one object then another until he faced the new officer.

“Commander, welcome aboard. It didn’t take star-fleet too long to find me a baby-sitter.” He looked at the tall man, “In fact, they would have had to send you on your way before they told me about receiving command for you to get here so quickly. What do you think about that?”

Marius CO

Magnus walked in an took a moment to look around the room. He hadn’t expected him to have moved in quickly so it wasn’t really a big surprise. He put his hands behind his back and smiled slightly at the Captains question, he had a very fair point. “I think Command had already made its decision to give you Command of the Genesis long before informing anyone, the next step is simply to give you a qualified First Officer” His posture changed slightly, more rigid “I’m not here to babysit you, despite what Command might have planned. I Execute the orders of my Commanding Officer.”

XO

“There are worse answers that that.” Marius seemed satisfied with the response. He walked over and reached out to shake Magnus’ hand.

Magnus shook the man’s hand. That was the grip of a soldier, something he hadn’t felt since the Samurai.

“Out there I’m the Captain, I expect you to do nothing to call that into question.” He paused for effect. “In here, in private, you are my partner. I am going to need support.. and while I hope it will never will happen, I would be a fool to believe I’ll never be wrong. I need you to tell me when I am. Are you up to that?”

Marius CO

“Yes, sir.” He answered plainly. He was curious as to what sort of captain Marius would make. having only glimpsed at his file. He was curious about how their relationship would form “You can count on me for that.”

XO

“First thing first, I need an honest, no bull-shirt appraisal of my, our department chiefs and their departments. You have no axe to grind and no favorites… at least not yet so you will be the most objective.” He paused.

“Secondly, Captain King rarely looped me in on promotion decisions until he already had his mind made up. So I could agree or talk him out of it not as easy as it sounds..” He shook his head. “That’s not going to work for me for a number of reasons. So going forward all promotion recommendations go through you, then cleared through me, with two exceptions… yours, for obvious reasons and the CMOs, again you will recommend. The second officer will concur and then it will cross my desk.”

Captain

Magnus took a second to consider his answer “Alright that all sound very reasonable. At least nothing I mind.” He paused “Have you considered how you were going to handle being Captain and married to the Chief Doctor?” He asked curiously “Not many Captains in the fleet have relationships with Department Heads.” His question seemed to be mostly due to not knowing them well enough.

XO

Marius’ corner of his mouth pinched. “Hence, why I assigned her to you and Mr. Dekker. It is my experience that the XO deals with most disciplinary action, and in her case I will give you supervisory and promotion authority over her. As best I can, I’m going to remove myself from any decision that could be seen as favoritism. The other issues that come with a Captain who has a spouse on their ship,” He exhaled as if he already started having those problems. “Is something a Captain has to deal with in the privacy of his quarters.”

Marius

Magnus nodded in agreement or maybe consolidation “Alright, that answers my questions about that. Do you have any questions for me?” He asked, he was certain there were a fact or two about his career that the Captain would be curious about.

XO

Marius looked back towards his desk. “I spent a while talking about my expectations. I wonder, what do you expect? What are you going to bring to this ship, not only in terms of what every XO does, but what do you do?” Interestingly enough there were some similarities between Magnus and Calvin not in course of their careers but where they had been and the trainings they had.

Mrius

Magnus put his left hand under his chin, supporting the arm with his right as he considered the answer for a moment “Well beyond performing my duties excellently I guess I’ll continue what I’ve been doing at the Academy and teach” He scratched his chin “This will be the first Science vessel I’ve served on since before the War” He referenced his ill-fated first mission “But I spent the bulk of my career on a Diplomatic ship. I’ve learned that a balance must be maintained on a Starfleet vessel. Now I was a security officer by trade until I went to command but after I did I started focusing on diplomacy. These are two things that may not be in extreme focus on a scientific explorer such as the Genesis. If the crew is willing to learn from my expertise I am willing to teach”

XO

“Excellently,” Marius seemed amused by his word choice. “Well, we do have a large number of veterans on this ship, but even they usually seem open to learning… save one… but I’ll let you figure those things out for yourself. I don’t want to give you information that might make you prejudge people. Hell, you might learn a few things about these guys and teach me something.”

“Knowledge is power.”

Marius

“Indeed it is” Magnus agreed “Although you needn’t worry about my prejudging members of the crew. I like to give people an opportunity to show me who they are, action not words” He then shrugged “Although there is a thing to be said about reputation”

XO

“Well if you want, you have full access to their fitness reports with the exception of my reviews. I’ve restricted access to them until you finish your assessments. I’d like to see them as soon as you can get them together.”

Marius

Magnus looked out the window and nodded “Alright, I’ll get on it.” His hands behind his back “You know I think all in all this might be fun” His tone, although it was slightly comical it had an edge of formality to it.

XO

“Just because its work doesn’t mean it can’t be fun.”

marius

Magnus smiled at the Captains comment “Agreed, sir.” He tugged slightly on his jacket “Is there anything else you want to know?” He asked.
