Tigress rased an eyebrow. “ sir if you don’t mind me asking what is your feald of study.” She wondered If this new XO was I science officer or perhaps a consuler . As she asked the question the progress of the scans would show up on the view screen.

Magnus chuckled, tapping on his console for a few moments. “Not at all Ensign” He stood up from his chair and pressed his console once more. A small part of the viewscreen now housed his Personel file. His Starfleet Timeline from his graduation date and final grades in 2373, several medals and combat commendations from service during the Dominion War and a picture of him taken last year on Earth. He turned to face the Bridge crew, now was as good a time as any to introduce himself.

” I have been a member of Starfleet for twenty-two years. I graduated from the Academy as a Security officer with a focus on special tactics and advanced combat training. After the War, I received specialized training in diplomacy from the diplomatic corps. Since then I have received two Doctorates, one in War Studies from the Starfleet War College and one in Diplomacy from the University of Geneva. For the last two years, I taught advanced Combat Tactics at the Starfleet Academy in San Fransisco. Any further questions?”

XO

” impressive, why did you join star fleet, sir,” Tigress asked. She was focused on the XO now. Her ears pointed in his direction; her gold eyes had a strange intensity to them almost as if she were more feline then humanoid. Her tail swayed back and forth behind her.
Ensign Tigress

Marius tilted his head and walked slowly away from the group. It would help his understanding of all of them if they spoke freely as if he wasn’t even there…

Magnus stifled a chuckle, not the question he had expected. “Well since you asked, I was convinced by my elderly cousin to enlist. I spent the better part of a year training and preparing for the entrance exam.” His smiled changed shape as he reminisced “But I guess I joined so I could explore the unknown, we had just discovered the Bajoran Wormhole when I started at the Academy. It was a very exciting year I can promise you that.”

XO

Tigress’ ears flattened agenst her head she was a little confused by the mans cheerful demeanor. “ do you find something amusing” she asked turning her head sideways. She was not shure what to think of this new XO.

The console was coming up with some details of the planet’s defences. The planet’s technology was definitely less advanced that what the Genesis had. The Starfleet ship would make short work of several of the smaller ships and even cause major damage to the planet should there be an all out firefight. From the scans, the planet had arms but not enough to make the inhabitants a war-mongering people. There were elements of culture and peace as well.

From their weapons’ placements, it was clear that the main line of defence were the ships that were in space. They had a sizeable fleet but even with numbers, they were no match for the Genesis.

GM

Marius slid over and looked down at the data that was coming in. Nothing he was concerned about so he continued hovering in the background.

Magnus turned around to look at the results of the scans “Oh I find many things amusing, Ensign” He put his hands behind his back “Well this is interesting” He looked at Ben “Lieutenant Parker, you’re a tactical officer, what do you make of them?” He asked his ‘Captain’

XO

CO

“Commander the only defense on Pallas are their ships. Even with their fleet the way it is now, it’d still be no match for the Genesis Sir. With the data collected should something happen to the away team we’d be able to get through their defenses pretty quickly and easy. “

Park

“That’s a good tactical analysis, quite spot on” He complimented “Now look beyond the Tactical” Magnus moved closer to the viewscreen “In Command you have to not just see the weapons but also what else is there. These are no warmongerers, they have centres for culture and peace and a planetary defence focused in their fleet. If our away team has the chance I’d like to ask them to bring back a sample of their cultural database, if you want to learn about a species study their art and history intertwined Lieutenant. It gives insight into what you already see”

XO

Tigress looked at the screen the fact that they seamed piecefull would be a good indicator that they might have more respect for the wild life in their plaint. “ I wonder how they handle their wild life.” Tigress mused. The comment was nothing more then the science officer thinking out loud. Thows he know her well know this was a comen acurince. She started to type camand into the consule a mother set of scans looking for types of animals plants and habitats. She however set the results of these scans to only show up at her station so not to desterb the XO and Ben.
Ensign Tigress

Ben nodded at th new XO “Yes Sir. Can we also send a cultural database of us as well in a sharing of two completely different cultures?” =^=Genesis to away team see if you can bring back a cultural database with you as soon as you’re able too.=^=

Scanning news was mind numbing, at least to Deeg. Even though it could mine a lot of information it was still a slog, and to find out specifics of whether there was any negative comments about their presence. He was listening. Cultural database. Not a bad idea. A lot could be gleaned from their history and art. He glanced over at the XO. Look deeper he said. What is underlying what they are doing? Why do they have warp capable warships when they have no one to war with? A natural exploratory mind would send out survey vessels to the nearest systems.

While he tapped about he pulled up their planetary defenses. Which again was a little odd. Defending against what? Were their satellites and defenses pointed ‘out’ or ‘in’ to their planet? Or out into space?
- Deeg

The open records were interesting. The Pallas system had ventured out of their planet to look for resources. They were able to colonise a neighbouring planet but except for the statistics from the planet, information about the colony was sparse. There was a report about negotiations to grant limited autonomy to the colony some years before. After that, there did not seem to be any news nor record. There were the secret archives; the computer onboard the Genesis had the capability to crack their security codes to look into the government secret archives.

GM

Deeg’s eyes squinted as he read this. His mind raced to the possibilities inherent here. One didn’t just ‘leave’ a colony out there. It had only been some decades. That was young. They could travel about between worlds. Autonomy. That smacked of independence maybe? But nothing in the news for years. They had strapping ships here that could make that trek. They had communications. Was no one interested? Secret archives. His fingers hovered .. curious. He glanced about out of the corner of his eye. Sometimes rules got in the way of so much good stuff.

“Sir,” he said, speaking to the XO for the first time. “They have a colony but public information is .. lacking, and nothing has hit the news for the past several years. It was colonized a few decades ago. The last thing I saw was some discussion about limited autonomy.” He paused. “Sir, if we could explain away a probe we could send it to check it out.” But with them being in orbit with all their defenses and ships around them that would not be an easy excuse. “The computer registered a government archive of information on the colony. They are encrypted but we could get past it. Active sensors could check for signs of life, energy outputs, transmissionson the other worlds, though those would be detected by the Pallosians and we’ve not played that hand yet on our sensors.”

Magnus moved closer to the center of the Bridge, stopping at the right side of the Captain’s chair. He had a slight smile on his face “Now that is interesting” He’d read all available information that the Genesis had been sending to Starfleet Command, both Logs and the intelligence they had gathered on this new species. From what he’d been able to gather there had been some disagreements regarding accessing the encrypted government files. “Often before first contact is made the species in question has been monitored for some time so we could better understand them. Now it’s more complex as we stand on their doorstep with boots on the ground. Surrounded by people we know next to nothing about” He mused “However, we are in their space and we must respect their laws, and I doubt I would take long to find that decrypting secret governmental files is probably highly illegal.” He patted the chair slightly “A sensor scan, on the other hand, is something I could recommend.” His eyes turned to the Captain before turning back to the ‘acting Captain’ Ben Park “Since this would be your decision how would you proceed?” He asked curiously.

XO

Marius’ face had a slight frown as he weighed the options. There was an only slightly perceptible nod in the affirmative.

Ben nodded “Proceed with running a full sensor scan”

Park

Marius

=/\=Away Team One to the Genesis. Captain, we’ve begun discussions with our hosts. They seem keenly interested in our communications technology. We’ve discussed the restrictions of our Prime Directive and am afraid we’ve had to step out as we may need advice on exactly what we can share.=/\= Riley kept his language neutral, hoping Marius and the others knew him well enough to read between the lines. He stressed the next sentence. =/\=It has us very concerned that we could divulge more information than would be appropriate. The Pallasians have bared their outstretched palms, so to speak, hoping we may be able to assist them.=/\=

It wasn’t a phrase Riley knew to really exist, but it sounded like an idiom and if any Pallasians were listening he hoped they’d read no more deeply into his words.

Deeg wasn’t sure quite whether it was him they were directing the order to or not. They could tip their hand somewhat, but easily explain away their ‘curiosity’ by the fact that they were an science vessel and that is what they do. “Aye,” he said as he brought sensors to bear. “Sweeping space so they don’t think we’re taking a bead on anything in particular. Search parameters … world compositions, energy sources, communications, ships, life readings.” Deeg was no stranger to intrigue and so made what he felt was a logical system scan at short range - given that anything ‘in’ a system where they were was short range for sensors.

While he did this he was listening to the comms. He wondered what nature that ‘assist’ was. They were not a galactic Santa that would put things under their tree, and any world at any time would have a dozen things they would want. But to have to pick one? he wondered what that was.
- Deeg

Tom stood at the back of the bridge observing the goings on. As an agent of Internal Security he didn’t have a lot to offer in first contact scenarios but, he could keep an eye on the crew to help assess security risks.

  • Tom, IntSec

“I’m pretty sure our subspace communications are based on the transtator,” He looked over towards science. “That would definitely be covered by the prime directive. The more basic light speed communications would have limited impact on their development.”

“Mr Park see if you can access their computer systems and figure out what this bared outstretched palms means… and what the standard acceptable responses are.”

Marius

“You’re right Captain, until further diplomatic contact can be established we can’t divulge any of our Technology. This falls directly under the Technologies sub-order of the Prime Directive” Magnus spoke calmly as he walked closer to the Captain “Sir, I read the mission logs that were sent to Starfleet Command, If I understood the Medical report correctly they have some sort of sensory abilities?” He said questioningly “Perhaps they are showing our Team something related to this ability, baring their arms so to speak.” Magnus hypothesised. He didn’t know the crew well enough to make a truly educated guess but he felt being quiet right now would be a mistake “I could transport down and meet with team one and provide assistance. I have diplomatic credentials and have been involved in a handful of first contact scenarios” He suggested. He wasn’t sure if going down and introducing another officer was the best course of action as it might disrupt the talks. If only he’d left a day earlier from Earth. Hell even just a few hours earlier from Black Rock he’d have caught up with them before they sent their teams down.

XO

The computer was able to assess some entries in the Pallas various computer systems. During negotiations, to show that they have nothing to hide, the Pallasians usually remove their gloves. On one hand it allows the parties to assess the truth level of each other, on the other hand, it signifies that “we have nothing to hide.”
