Val replied. || Hello, ah hi. We’re hoping to see a suite to rent? || Benji stil had his nose buried in his comms. Typical. No help. She hated a intercom almost as much as leaving messages. || There’s two of us. Me and my fella. ||
Benji’s brow rose. ‘Fella?’ He mouthed. Val shrugged.
Val/Benji||Hold on, I’ll be there in a moment.||
“Fella?” Benji said again. Val just smiled.
A couple minutes later, a middle-aged Valtese woman appeared and opened the door, gesturing for them to step in. “Hello, I’m Riase. Come on into the office and and we can talk.”
“Hello Riase,” Val said with a smile. “This here’s Benji, my fella.” She had put on an accent that could only be described as casual middle class. Benji followed behind the two women and looked around as though getting the size of the place, which he was.
Riase led them to a small office around the corner that was neatly kept and sparsely decorated. But it felt cozy rather than utilitarian, added by the plants the woman was clearly found of since there were several. “What sort of suite are you looking for?” she said as she took a seat on the other side of the desk and gestured for them to sit.

Benji came in and moved past Val to take the offered seat. He looked around and then focused on Riase. Val had stopped by some of the plants and lightly caressed the leaves with her fingertips and leaned in to smell them. “Botany major,” she said. “Can’t live without some bit of nature around me.” Wistfully she turned and sat down beside Benji and stretched out a hand to lay on his.
“I know the feeling,” Riase said with a smile.
Benji replied, “We’re back to take up graduate studies and are looking for a place nearby. Doesn’t have to be big. Away from the noise. We ..”
Val interjected, “Something facing the sunrise. Morning sun is important. Sorry Ben, just needed to say that.”
Benji gave her smile that was nothing short of patiently vexed. “Uhhh, we are on a budget so something that fits. Do you have openings?”
- Benji/ValLooking at her screen, Riase glanced briefly, to confirm what she already knew in her head. “Our places are well maintained and in high demand, though it fluctuates, so depends on what you mean by ‘on a budget’.”
“What he means is that Daddy is paying for the room,” Val said. “We were told to not take advantage too much.”
Benji squeezed her hand. “He told me to take care of you right.”
“There. That’s settled then.” Val beamed as though winning an argument.
Sliding a display tablet towards them, she tapped the edge. “You can see the dimensions and features of the ones we have available. We’ve got a studio that gets great morning sun, but it might feel a bit cramped for two people. The one-bedroom gets partial sun, but there’s quite a bit of reflected light off the building next to us. Tenth floor, so some nice city views and a bit of a peek at the coast as well. It’s a bit pricier than some of the other one-bedrooms, but there’s a small spare room that’s good for an office space. Laundry and utilities are included. The transportation hub is just down the street, so easy to get to the universities,” Riase explained.

They leaned in as one and peered on to the tablet. “Snug,” Benji said about the studio. “And sunny.” Val didn’t look convinced but nodded. The one bedroom .. they looked at it and then at one another and both gave a slight shake to the negative. Benji frowned at the 10th floor apartment but Val beamed. “I like it,” she said then cut off Benji, “And Daddy will too,” in a tone that said to not argue. Benji didn’t reply.
“We like that one,” she said, pointing to the 10th floor room. “Can we see it? We were attracted to here because of Benji. One of his friends used to live here and always gave such great reviews and how much he liked it. So we just had to see.” She smiled at Riase with a hopeful expression that they could be here.
