He made his way silently over to the table collecting all the other drinks bottles, before adhering himself to the wall to observe the goings-on.

COS

Riley noticed the COS slip past him and make his way to the wall. It wasn’t unexpected. McGregor had served on the Genesis for a long period now, but Riley knew him to be an introvert. Only the entrance of Sage prevented the Counselor from invading the man’s space.

Reia had gotten a glass of sparkling water with cloudberry essence before realizing her proximity to the COS. She gave a shy smile and took a few steps away sensing he might be the observational type like herself.

Thomas gave the new Intel chief an appreciative nod as she moved slightly away. Back to the wall made it very easy to project a bubble of “personal space”.

  • Reia, CIO

A few minutes later, Sage walked into the party wearing an off the shoulder cream, colored sweater with the sleeves ruched up, and a pair of figure hugging, black leggings, with a pair of medium heeled short boots. Her hair was pulled over one shoulder which drew attention to the turquoise jewelry at her ears, and wrists. Since Cal had decided to go to the party without her, she wasn’t at all interested in finding him now. Crossing the room, Sage set a square, black box tied with a ribbon on the house-warming gift table. A tiny card on the box simply said, ‘I’ll tell you both what this is when we are alone.—S’

A quick look around told her that almost everyone had arrived. Time to find a drink and some conversation.

—Sage

Marius watched Riley walk over to Sage. As he awkwardly stood mostly alone watching another man smoothly and comfortably hand his wife a drink. Marius cursed his stubborn nature. Another man would just apologize and move on, although he barely knew what he was apologizing for. Not to mention he thought false apologies were more insulting to the receiver than honest disagreement.

He continued to roll the options in his head, Sage could just as easily come to him. She was the one who walked out on their conversation… why should he come running back to her. ‘ARRGGGG.’ he screamed inside his own head.

Tigress noticed both the captain and CMO’s strange behavior. She turned to Ben ” ill be right back” she said. Then she walked over to the captain. She got to just within his reach before stopping. Her ears were laid back against her head and her tail twitched. She was definitely not comfortable with being this close to the captain. But with the party going on she had to in order to talk to him. ” is there a reason your acting out of caricature Captain ?” Ensign Tigress asked her voice was not exactly conversational. She was trying to see if he was ok but at the same time Tigress could not hide the fact that she did not trust him.
Ensign Tigress

Marius had picked up the approach of the feline ensign but had not turned just in case he wasn’t the objective of her course. When she stopped he knew and turned slowly, the unlit cigar leading his face. He paused as he listened to her question. “Out of Character Ensign?” He said slowly and with what sounded like a bit of humor. “Cigar, check, Nodding authoritatively at people, check, Drinking… ” He reached out quickly and picked up a glass from someone passing too close. “check” he finished as he took a sip.

“I’m not certain of what behavior you speak of.”

“ you are usually next to the CMO doing all of the Sir. It’s been that way every party Iv see you at with out fail. Not to mention something just seams off about you” she said.
Ensign Tigress

“True enough, or is it that the Chief Medical Officer is usually next to me,” He looked at Tigress with a raised brow, “Married couples usually stand close to each other.” He paused. “I presume its because they like each other’s company, but since you are married you should be in proximity all the time… that could lead to not liking to be near each other.” He postulated.

“ ether way you have broken your normal pattern and if the rumors are correct you don’t like socializing so it makes sense that you would hang out with the Chief Medical Office much like I usually hang out with Ben at events like these .” Tigress said simply .

“Oh, that’s the rumor,” Marius had presumed that was more the accepted fact. He snorted a little, he should be quite proud that it was consider a rumor by the fairly blunt Tigress.

“I’ve noticed you are spending some time with our Tactical and Security Officer.” He looked off back towards his wife and Riley. “Not everything below decks escapes my attention. How’s that going?”

“ Ben has not told you already I guess you XO know about it before you Ben and I are umm… in think he used the term Dating. Now are you going to change the subject” tigress said she was not a fan of small talk.
Ensign Tigress

“Dating, well congratulations, some of my favorite moments of a relationship is the first. The first date, the first kiss…” He trailed off… some of the other firsts he didn’t want to list with a significantly junior officer.

‘Indeed I was trying to change the subject, but since you seem interested I’ll answers some questions about me, but before I go into details, I’d like to know why you want to know such things from me. They shouldn’t matter, theoretically.” He paused, “What should matter is I haven’t lost an officer during my entire career due to an order or a failure to give an order on any Star-Fleet mission that I was in command of. ” He looked off, a record that he doubted would remain so pristine.

“ wail your record is impressive you do not have my trust. Only time will tell if you will be like Captain King or better then him. That’s beside the point a distracted officer in any position is more likely to make mistakes. Something is bothering you. I came to make she your ok and help if I can.” she said flatly. Her ears were pinned against her head now she was tired of dancing around the subject.

Riley poured a vodka over rocks with a twist and brought it to Sage. His quarters had filled with people and the buzz of conversation was competing against, and winning over, the soft music playing. He lifted his drink to hers, an intimate toast.

“You look stunning Sage, no doubt reminding a certain someone of the benefits that would come with a detente.”

Dekker, CNS

She took the drink and smiled. “Thanks! And I’m not holding my breath for a truce. He’s said some really awful…” She stopped and bit her lip. “Sorry, guess I need this more than I thought I did.” Sage took a healthy swallow from the glass. “Go ahead and greet your guests, I’m fine.” Riley didn’t move away immediately, so she reassured him again. “Honest, Riley, I’m okay. Its been a while since I’ve seen some of these people—I’ll just mingle.” She began looking around to see who exactly was present.

—Sage

If anyone would be annoyed at the thought of a babysitter it would be Sage, and Riley took the cue. He enjoyed her company above most others and would be happy to stand here with her drinking and chatting, but a constant companion that wasn’t her husband seemed only a reminder of his absence at this point. He looked over toward Marius. Before he’d walked away he’d sensed something from the Captain. He’d been more verbally complimentary than was his norm, but it fitted his change in his position. Riley had also sensed a curiosity from the man. He couldn’t place it firmly, but he knew his next order of business was to meet the man one on one. Riley had had a close relationship with Julien, had been the man’s confidant and sounding board. It was the role a Counselor and a friend should play. He knew that particular dynamic would not be replicated with their new CO, but they had to find their own dialogue.

Riley gave Sage a quick peck on the cheek and moved off to mingle with others.

Magnus looked across the room and watched everyone with great interest. Casually making his way to the drinks table he eyed the different drinks available. He grabbed a beer and opened it, lifting it up and took a slight sniff. He took a sip as he considered what to do next. He turned around and looked across the room. In his mind a mental roadmap of where everyone’s locations was forming. The Security Chief by the wall next to the Intelligence officer, Ben Park, and Tigress together next to the Chief Engineer Thor, the Captain chewing his cigar standing a surprising distance from his wife, an Andorian woman and her child who he was fairly certain was one of those subdepartment heads He’d tried to memorize. Then, of course, his generous host zipping across the room conversing. At what time of the night would it be acceptable to open his bottle of Black Death to entertain the crew.

XO

As Magnus watched the room he would feel a tug on his trousers. Looking down he would see Sheea looking up at him head coked to the side. She cocked her head to the left then the right then smiled. “Hi I’m Sheeah are you new here. I didn’t see you before. Maybe we can be friends” she said sweetly.

Lieut Chan (Sub-DH Robotics) And Sheeah

Magnus turned around and looked down at the young girl and smiled. After placing his drink back on the nearest table he took a knee to face her directly “I am indeed new here. My name is Magnús Péturson” His slight Scandinavian accent evident “You can call me Maggi” He placed his right hand on his knee “I’m sure we can be friends. Do you have many friends here?”

“But isn’t Maggie a girls name?” Sheeah asked she had obviously misunderstood the shortened name.

Magnus smiled at her response “Somewhere yes, not where I’m from. Magga is the girl version” he explained.

Sheeah nodded “Oh Ok sorry. It’s hard to keep up with all the different places people are form.” Sheeah said with a smile.

She then nodded “I do. None my age though. They’re all grownups. I like NE goodie, she makes cup cakes and they’re yummy. I can always find a friend at anytime” she said happily.”My best friends gone though he was in charge before. But he left to save people.” she added a twinge of sadness in her voice.

Magnus nodded with understanding. Losing a Captain was hard on most of the crew, especially a tight-knit one. “Well as the old song goes, you’ve got a friend in me” He smiled reassuringly “Now how about we get you something to drink and eat?” He asked looking around the room “Can’t have you starve in my party can we?”

“Okay maybe we can find my mommy and she can sit with us.” Sheeah said happily taking Magnus’s hand “do you have a favorite food?” she asked.

Lieut Chan (Sub-DH Robotics)

Dagen had a target rich environment for talking to people. Sipping on the wine he thought it a tad too chilled (to his taste) though it would warm soon. He could people watch, though that was not his style entirely. His watching was .. more interactive. He noticed Reia who was by herself. He didn’t really know her but had heard of her. Dagen didn’t know everyone though the key people it certainly behooved him to know. Slipping over to where she was - which wasn’t ‘that’ far given that it was someone’s quarters … he introduced himself. “Hi, I’m Dagen. I find it is always more fun to people watch with someone.” He glanced down at her drink. “What is that?” he asked, curiousity evident.
- Dagen, CE

Marius

XO

Reia turned her attention to the CE and glanced down at her glass before looking back up.

“Reia Shandy. I’m your new CIO and this is sparkling water with cloudberry essence. Alcohol and I don’t make good mates.” she said casually allowing a bit of her Australian accent to show through.

  • Reia
    Lieut Chan

Dagen had certainly heard of the water-with-flavor mixes. He had always found them to be .. pale, the flavor just not enough to satisfy. Thor liked it though for whatever reason. Dagen had his theories which went back a host and her penchant for flavored teas. “I know what you mean. Before I was joined I was fine for certain things, well, most things. After I joined with Thor I found that I was irritated by certain things. Some alcohol and things that are very salty.” He took a small sip. Indeed he had had a time when almost any alcohol was upsetting, though after his time on OP42 he found that there was a tolerance for some but not others. He was still searching that out.

“What did you do before? And what got you interested in the intelligence arena?” he asked.
- Dagen, CE

Reia’s dislike for alcohol was mental, not physical but, she didn’t know this man and was happy to let that subject lie.

“Actually Intel is pretty much all I’ve done. That and a lot of security work on various planets, outposts, ships, you name it.” she said.

  • Reia, CIO

Dagen felt a bit of aloofness in Reia though he was intrigued. Maybe he could get her advice on some matters of gathering intelligence or just following out clues at a later time. “You’ve got around,” he observed. “Been to OP42? I spent a couple years there doing freelance engineering work. Place was an engineer’s dream. Or nightmare, depending on how you looked at it.”
- Dagen, CE

Reia thought about it for a few seconds.

“I think I passed through there on a three day layover when I was on holiday with my grandparents. But that must have been five years ago. So do you like dreams or nightmares?” she asked with a friendly smile.

  • Reia

Dagen pondered that question. It was intriguing and he wondered whether there was an ‘intelligence’ basis behind it. Be that as it may, he had to think about it. Sipping, his eyes on Reia, he formed his answer. “Waking dreams and nightmares? Dreams are to aspire to, then make new ones. Nightmares are challenges to overcome. When one is sleeping? Dreams are just nice and rarely remembered. I like nightmares, well, some. Most I wake up and want to go back in and finish them. They are so unreal that they are almost like a holodeck adventure.” It was the others that were too real around his sister that bothered him. Indeed, though, even they were muted from the waking runaway worries that he had entertained over the years in his search for her. He smiled. “Sometimes a dream can be a nightmare, don’t you think? Or vice versa?”
- Dagen

Reia was surprised he had such an interesting answer, Yes, he is definitely a joined Trill. she thought and wondered how many hosts Thor had had.

“Some people never wake up from their nightmares even when they’re awake. It’s not a good place to be which is why I prefer not to remember either way. Dream, nightmare, as long as I sleep.”

  • Reia

“Dreams are fleeting though,” Dagen thought aloud. “How many do we really remember once we wake, unless one trains oneself to? Same thing with nightmares. There are only a rare few which may yet haunt one in the day.” He could remember some himself. “But it is the daytime dreams that persist because they are the ones calling us to risk them. They are borne out of who we are inside.” His free hand touched his chest, though it was more a spot between heart and where the sac was that held Thor. “Night dreams are often just … pizza.” He smiled. “What is your dream, your aspiration?” That seemed a safe question. For Starfleet that tended to be their ‘dream’, an opening question a department head would spring on them, or a counselor to gauge someone.
- Dagen

Ben noticed his Department head off in the corner and continued to peruse the gathering by walking around the room greeting everyone he met. He stealthily walked to Thomas whereabouts “nice party huh?”

Thomas gave a start. “Jesus, Park, warn a guy next time,” he said. “I suppose it’s OK, nobody’s too drunk and everyone still has their clothes on at least…”

Lt. (j.g.) Park

Marius CO

Riley had moved toward the bar, refilling his drink and using the time to observe the pairings around the room. He’d hoped bringing the core of the Genesis’s officers together would allow people to talk to those they might not otherwise and as he saw the Captain with Tigress, the Chief Engineer with their new Intelligence Officer, and Sheeah, the resident force of cuteness and positive energy tugging at their new XO, he felt his plan was coming to fruition. He almost hated to interrupt, but he had to play host and there was a purpose to the evening.

He retrieved a spoon and tapped it against his glass, “If I could have everyone’s attention for a moment.”

He waited for the buzz of conversation to subside before continuing.

“It was only a few months ago that we lost our home. The Genesis-A was more than a ship to many of us. There are a number of people in this room who spent years on board her. In a very literal sense, families were created, and in a more figurative sense we found a larger family. At its head was a singular person. Captain Julien King personified much of what the Genesis came to represent. We lost the Genesis-A and while our new ship is superior in a technical sense, change is difficult and it will be a while before what our future holds outweighs the loss of our past. We faced a new loss when Captain King moved on to the next phase of his life. We celebrate the happiness he will find and we know that what he has left behind will endure. Captain King was a true leader and a the test of leadership is as much what happens after you are gone as it is what happens while you are present. In this room I see many faces I call friends and many others I hope to soon know better and call the same. I see in this room the strength of the Genesis and before we get to the reason I asked you all here, to celebrate some of those new faces, I want to give three cheers to the man who will ably lead us into the future. Captain Calvin Marius.”

Riley looked to the man, cigar clenched between his teeth and beckoned him forward.

Dekker, CNS

Dagen winced inwardly. Yes they had lost a ship and now their enigmatic CO. Dagen had had a hand over the last two years of constructing this Genesis version. Those words felt like a jab at his work. He supposed Dekker meant well. He drained his drink and looked back for another at the table. When Marius was called up, Dagen’s attention went back to him, idly setting the empty wine glass down. Who was this person that seemed so familiar to him? Sure he was the XO and sure he had some .. paths crossing with him in a short but odd chapter relating to the CMO, his wife, but there was a distance there all the same. He ever came away with the idea that Marius didn’t like him. And now he was the CO.

Marius gave a warm smile to the crowd as he walked towards Riley - for him, however there was a glare - as he got close to Riley he whispered loud enough for only him to hear, “I’ll look for you later.” He pulled the unlit cigar from the corner of his mouth as he reached to front of the room and spun to face the crowd. Again with a smile far warmer than anyone, save Sage, had seen from him he looked towards the crew, his crew, before he took a deep breath. “Thank you Mr. Dekker, Hello Gentle-beings, I didn’t know that there would be a speech or I would have prepared some remarks.” He looked towards the back of the room then scanned down trying to make eye contact with everyone.

Sage watched her husband from across the room. ‘God, he’s good looking…’ she thought as the word ‘gentle-beings’ fell out of his mouth. It was so unlike something he would say that it brought her out of her lusty thoughts.

“Because you deserve prepared remarks, not spontaneous comments from a man who doesn’t do a lot of talking. This is all new to me, addressing the crew, Julien, Captain King did all the talking for me. I did the grunting… I’m sure you remember.” He paused, “I remember when I was on Golardin Core, and my Sargent stepped on a mine and blew up in front…” Calvin started making an explosion gesture with his hand before putting them down. “well, um, we lost our Sargent and I was placed in command. My first command.” He scratched his chin uncomfortably, “You never feel ready, you certainly aren’t ready to step in the shoes of a Captain like King or Lewis and command as ship like the Genny, but you try.”

He glanced about again looking for someone, then back to the crowd in general. “I didn’t join Star-Fleet to be a Captain, to lead officers, I joined to serve. To do what needed to be done so I can better the circumstances of those around me. I joined Star-Fleet to so I could help the next person. In a way, isn’t that why all of us signed up… to help those who couldn’t help themselves, to sacrifice so others would not need to, to be the shield against enemies, the light against the darkness, the food to the hungry.”

“So a few days ago, the Fleet, in all its wisdom decided the best way for me to serve is to take Command of the best Damn ship in the fleet, and I am honored beyond words. But I think they didn’t quite get it right, that’s not how I view being Captain, I don’t command you, I serve you, hopefully, by making the right decisions and giving the right orders I’ll get to save you so in turn you get to save your fellow officer. That’s what I think being a Captain is.”

“I don’t know many of you as well as I would like, so I don’t know the struggles you have gone through the fears and doubts you might have, but I can tell you we all have them and all you can do is your best. Learn from your leaders, your fellow officers, be the best officer you can be, and do what we all should, Serve and Save each other.” He turned to the first officer, “Magnus, I’m here to serve you,” then to Dekker, “I’m here to serve you… ” Then he turned to the assembled crowd. “I’m here to serve all of you. Thank you.”

Marius

Well, he was no Julien King when it came to speeches, but she knew he wasn’t a fan of public speaking to start with. And although she was still upset about their personal situation, she would never let the crew see the turmoil. Riley and Steven knew about it because of her visit to them the other night, but that was as far as she was willing to take it.

Ensign Tigresses

Ben yelled out “we couldn’t hear start over!” and hid from the Captain’s glare by crouching behind several people in front of him.

Park

“Troublemaker,” Thomas tutted, grabbing Park’s collar and hauling him up to his full height. “No hiding.”

Ensign Mary Jameson had been standing next to Ben clutching the wrapped bottle tightly. She really didn’t want to be here but there was no way RJ would let her forget the one last gift she had to deliver from Marishka. If she couldn’t find the Captain in a quiet moment, she would leave it on the table and duck out or, perhaps, speak to Riley. he would understand.”

  • Reia

COS

Once the speech was over with and people had settled back into their own conversations, Sage went to the bar and refilled her drink. Emerald eyes traveled around the room, looking for the man who was going to command at Calvin’s side.
