“I think I passed through there on a three day layover when I was on holiday with my grandparents. But that must have been five years ago. So do you like dreams or nightmares?” she asked with a friendly smile.

  • Reia

Dagen pondered that question. It was intriguing and he wondered whether there was an ‘intelligence’ basis behind it. Be that as it may, he had to think about it. Sipping, his eyes on Reia, he formed his answer. “Waking dreams and nightmares? Dreams are to aspire to, then make new ones. Nightmares are challenges to overcome. When one is sleeping? Dreams are just nice and rarely remembered. I like nightmares, well, some. Most I wake up and want to go back in and finish them. They are so unreal that they are almost like a holodeck adventure.” It was the others that were too real around his sister that bothered him. Indeed, though, even they were muted from the waking runaway worries that he had entertained over the years in his search for her. He smiled. “Sometimes a dream can be a nightmare, don’t you think? Or vice versa?”
- Dagen

Reia was surprised he had such an interesting answer, Yes, he is definitely a joined Trill. she thought and wondered how many hosts Thor had had.

“Some people never wake up from their nightmares even when they’re awake. It’s not a good place to be which is why I prefer not to remember either way. Dream, nightmare, as long as I sleep.”

  • Reia

“Dreams are fleeting though,” Dagen thought aloud. “How many do we really remember once we wake, unless one trains oneself to? Same thing with nightmares. There are only a rare few which may yet haunt one in the day.” He could remember some himself. “But it is the daytime dreams that persist because they are the ones calling us to risk them. They are borne out of who we are inside.” His free hand touched his chest, though it was more a spot between heart and where the sac was that held Thor. “Night dreams are often just … pizza.” He smiled. “What is your dream, your aspiration?” That seemed a safe question. For Starfleet that tended to be their ‘dream’, an opening question a department head would spring on them, or a counselor to gauge someone.
- Dagen

Ben noticed his Department head off in the corner and continued to peruse the gathering by walking around the room greeting everyone he met. He stealthily walked to Thomas whereabouts “nice party huh?”

Thomas gave a start. “Jesus, Park, warn a guy next time,” he said. “I suppose it’s OK, nobody’s too drunk and everyone still has their clothes on at least…”

Lt. (j.g.) Park

Marius CO

Riley had moved toward the bar, refilling his drink and using the time to observe the pairings around the room. He’d hoped bringing the core of the Genesis’s officers together would allow people to talk to those they might not otherwise and as he saw the Captain with Tigress, the Chief Engineer with their new Intelligence Officer, and Sheeah, the resident force of cuteness and positive energy tugging at their new XO, he felt his plan was coming to fruition. He almost hated to interrupt, but he had to play host and there was a purpose to the evening.

He retrieved a spoon and tapped it against his glass, “If I could have everyone’s attention for a moment.”

He waited for the buzz of conversation to subside before continuing.

“It was only a few months ago that we lost our home. The Genesis-A was more than a ship to many of us. There are a number of people in this room who spent years on board her. In a very literal sense, families were created, and in a more figurative sense we found a larger family. At its head was a singular person. Captain Julien King personified much of what the Genesis came to represent. We lost the Genesis-A and while our new ship is superior in a technical sense, change is difficult and it will be a while before what our future holds outweighs the loss of our past. We faced a new loss when Captain King moved on to the next phase of his life. We celebrate the happiness he will find and we know that what he has left behind will endure. Captain King was a true leader and a the test of leadership is as much what happens after you are gone as it is what happens while you are present. In this room I see many faces I call friends and many others I hope to soon know better and call the same. I see in this room the strength of the Genesis and before we get to the reason I asked you all here, to celebrate some of those new faces, I want to give three cheers to the man who will ably lead us into the future. Captain Calvin Marius.”

Riley looked to the man, cigar clenched between his teeth and beckoned him forward.

Dekker, CNS

Dagen winced inwardly. Yes they had lost a ship and now their enigmatic CO. Dagen had had a hand over the last two years of constructing this Genesis version. Those words felt like a jab at his work. He supposed Dekker meant well. He drained his drink and looked back for another at the table. When Marius was called up, Dagen’s attention went back to him, idly setting the empty wine glass down. Who was this person that seemed so familiar to him? Sure he was the XO and sure he had some .. paths crossing with him in a short but odd chapter relating to the CMO, his wife, but there was a distance there all the same. He ever came away with the idea that Marius didn’t like him. And now he was the CO.

Marius gave a warm smile to the crowd as he walked towards Riley - for him, however there was a glare - as he got close to Riley he whispered loud enough for only him to hear, “I’ll look for you later.” He pulled the unlit cigar from the corner of his mouth as he reached to front of the room and spun to face the crowd. Again with a smile far warmer than anyone, save Sage, had seen from him he looked towards the crew, his crew, before he took a deep breath. “Thank you Mr. Dekker, Hello Gentle-beings, I didn’t know that there would be a speech or I would have prepared some remarks.” He looked towards the back of the room then scanned down trying to make eye contact with everyone.

Sage watched her husband from across the room. ‘God, he’s good looking…’ she thought as the word ‘gentle-beings’ fell out of his mouth. It was so unlike something he would say that it brought her out of her lusty thoughts.

“Because you deserve prepared remarks, not spontaneous comments from a man who doesn’t do a lot of talking. This is all new to me, addressing the crew, Julien, Captain King did all the talking for me. I did the grunting… I’m sure you remember.” He paused, “I remember when I was on Golardin Core, and my Sargent stepped on a mine and blew up in front…” Calvin started making an explosion gesture with his hand before putting them down. “well, um, we lost our Sargent and I was placed in command. My first command.” He scratched his chin uncomfortably, “You never feel ready, you certainly aren’t ready to step in the shoes of a Captain like King or Lewis and command as ship like the Genny, but you try.”

He glanced about again looking for someone, then back to the crowd in general. “I didn’t join Star-Fleet to be a Captain, to lead officers, I joined to serve. To do what needed to be done so I can better the circumstances of those around me. I joined Star-Fleet to so I could help the next person. In a way, isn’t that why all of us signed up… to help those who couldn’t help themselves, to sacrifice so others would not need to, to be the shield against enemies, the light against the darkness, the food to the hungry.”

“So a few days ago, the Fleet, in all its wisdom decided the best way for me to serve is to take Command of the best Damn ship in the fleet, and I am honored beyond words. But I think they didn’t quite get it right, that’s not how I view being Captain, I don’t command you, I serve you, hopefully, by making the right decisions and giving the right orders I’ll get to save you so in turn you get to save your fellow officer. That’s what I think being a Captain is.”

“I don’t know many of you as well as I would like, so I don’t know the struggles you have gone through the fears and doubts you might have, but I can tell you we all have them and all you can do is your best. Learn from your leaders, your fellow officers, be the best officer you can be, and do what we all should, Serve and Save each other.” He turned to the first officer, “Magnus, I’m here to serve you,” then to Dekker, “I’m here to serve you… ” Then he turned to the assembled crowd. “I’m here to serve all of you. Thank you.”

Marius

Riley let out a whoop and clapped. The speech was pure Marius and yet he wasn’t sure he’d ever heard the man put into words his philosophy so clearly.

Well, he was no Julien King when it came to speeches, but she knew he wasn’t a fan of public speaking to start with. And although she was still upset about their personal situation, she would never let the crew see the turmoil. Riley and Steven knew about it because of her visit to them the other night, but that was as far as she was willing to take it.

Ensign Tigresses

Ben yelled out “we couldn’t hear start over!” and hid from the Captain’s glare by crouching behind several people in front of him.

Park

That caused Riley to laugh. Thankfully he’d maneuvered himself to the sidelines so only those near him heard.

Marius looked over the crowd and despite the quick maneuver of Park, he both saw him and recognized the voice. He was not surprised by the light hearted heckling.

“Troublemaker,” Thomas tutted, grabbing Park’s collar and hauling him up to his full height. “No hiding.”

Ensign Mary Jameson had been standing next to Ben clutching the wrapped bottle tightly. She really didn’t want to be here but there was no way RJ would let her forget the one last gift she had to deliver from Marishka. If she couldn’t find the Captain in a quiet moment, she would leave it on the table and duck out or, perhaps, speak to Riley. he would understand.”

COS

Once the speech was over with and people had settled back into their own conversations, Sage went to the bar and refilled her drink. Emerald eyes traveled around the room, looking for the man who was going to command at Calvin’s side.

—Sage (fixing my post)

Ben reassuring Tigress “I’m okay Tigress. The Lieutenant was helping me stand up. That’s all.”

Park,

She did not know why Ben’s statement was so funny but it was. She burst into a fit of laughter. ” I saw what happened, your a bad lier… Humanoids don’t help each other up by the shirt color” she said in between fits of giggling someone who did not know her hay have thiut she was drunk. However she was not she did not like the taste or smell of alcohol. Her ears were up now and the agitated switching of her tail had become a gentle sway.
Ensign Tigress

Marius walked sharply to Dekker. “I believe you owe me a drink.”

Marius

Magnus had been watching the two short speeches with great interest. There seemed to be some fairly good camaraderie here. It was then that he realized he was still holding the hand of the Small Andorian Child “Ah right, now that the grown-ups have finished showing off why don’t we find your mother” He said before looking back up and scanning the room. He’d already notice the woman not far from them and turned to her general direction. After a moment of looking, he moved over to the Andorian, passing the Chief Engineer, whose curious glances hadn’t gone past him “Lieutenant Chan, I think this one belongs to you” He said with his most charming smile to the Scientist.

XO

Chan turned to face the person calling her name “I wondered where she had got to” She said happily, well happily for Chan anyway.

Chen then knelled down to her daughter “I see you’ve made a new friend. So what do you think?” Chan asked her daughter.

“I think he’s great. His names funny though” Sheeah said with a playful giggle.

“I’m sure he find your name funny to” Chan said smiling before standing up and looking at the XO “Thank you for being so warm towards my daughter. Some don’t like her being so forward or hanging around them.” She said honestly “So what do you think of the ship?” she asked.

Lieut Chan (Sub-DH Robotics) and Sheeah

Riley looked around the room, seeing their new XO engaged with Sheeah he knew his introduction of their true guest of honor could wait.

“Alright, Captain, I’m happy to toast your new position. Follow me,” he led the man through the crowd toward the bar.

Marius was far more surly than his tone implied. He disliked public speaking, hated being ambushed more, and already was in a crappy mood before he even walked into the ‘party’. He had ever intention of lighting his cigar and making Riley stand right next to him until he finished as punishment. Then he saw the bottle.

Riley crouched down, opening a cabinet nestled in the bottom of the bar and pulled out a bottle of Macallen 2304. He didn’t wait to see if the Captain would agree. He knew the man had a taste for good liquor and this one was special. Riley poured them each a finger, well maybe two, neat. He handed the glass to Marius.

“To future adventures.”

Dekker, CNS

He couldn’t help but let his eyes light up… “Oh my…” He looked at the bottle closely. “My precious.” He said in both a raspy and high pitched tone that reminded many of a movie character. “Mr. Dekker… you certainly know how to make a Captain happy.” He lifted the glass and took a long sniff… “Its a shame you can only drink this once.”

Marius CO

Riley tilted his glass toward Marius, “Well, you only gain your first command once.”

Marius made a face. “I know I should be more excited, but I’m more concerned. Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems.”

And with that Riley quaffed the drink in one swallow. The liquid was smooth and rich, warming his throat and gut. He poured himself another and pushed the bottle toward Marius. A part of the Counselor was hoping Sage would see him with her husband and she would join them, letting Riley serve as a bridge between the two. Another part thought maybe the drink would warm Marius’s mood enough that he’d excuse himself to seek out Sage. But both spouses were stubborn and facilitating a detente was only one bullet point on Riley’s agenda.

Marius took a measured sip, rolling the whiskey over is his tongue several times before swallowing. You only got to swallow the drink for the first time once and he wanted to relish and remember it.

“It can get isolating. Command,” Riley didn’t speak from personal experience, but from his years serving alongside Julien. “I hope you know you can trust me.”

Dekker, CNS

“I know you’re there Riley, I intend to count on you heavily.” He looked off before looking back.

Riley nodded. Years of serving together should make the Captain’s assurance a given, but he appreciated hearing it explicitly.

“In a way you are always alone,” He shrugged. “I don’t worry about having no peers in terms of rank.” He looked about to be certain no one could over hear him. “Its the responsibility. There are a lot of lives that one starship carries, a lot of lives one Captain’s decisions can effect.” He looked at Riley for a moment. “I can agonize over each decision… I’ll never let anyone see it, but every error haunts me and it drives me crazy when people make decisions for others and they have neither the conscious or experience to make.”

“I know many of those decisions will, by necessity, be made in the moment and by you alone. Processing the aftermath can be a team effort.”

Riley would have continued down this train of thought, three drinks in made it harder to stop, but a strong bite of nervous emotion pierced its way through the crowded and noisy room. Riley turned to see who it was that was approaching and he turned to see a vaguely familiar face just as she knelt to deliver a package.

Mary’s timing had never been good but the Ensign had successfully slipped away from Ben and Tigress and made her way towards the Counselor and Captain. Being an empath, Riley could probably sense her nervousness a mile away. She knew that it would be inappropriate to outright interrupt them so she set the present on the floor between them and turned to go.

  • NE Mary

Marius spotted the Ensign’s approach long before she came within hearing range, as she started to turn away. “Did you want to speak to me, ensign…” He stared at her for a moment running through the crew roster in his head. “Mary… Mary…”

CO

As the Captain called to Mary, Riley bent down to retrieve the present she’d deposited before them, turning it over in his hands, examining it.

Dekker, CNS

Mary knew it would be rude not to reply so she turned around and looked them, both in the eyes before clearing her throat slightly. She didn’t know quite how to say what needed to be said but she was honor bound to do it anyway.

“A gift for our new Captain, from the same person who gave you your lovely bottle of Merlot Counselor Dekker.” she turned slightly to face Marius more directly, “Ensign Mary Jameson, Engineering. My congratulations sir.” she said calmly waiting to be excused.

Mary didn’t do very well in crowds but was learning to overcome that but she couldn’t overcome the early shift she had tomorrow.

  • NE Mary

With her third drink in hand, Sage found a place towards the edge of the group where she was out of the direct line of traffic to and from the bar. Her usual activity at an event was subdued, but she didn’t think anyone would really notice except, perhaps, her husband. She couldn’t get the conversation she’d had with Riley and David out of her mind where both of them had said she needed to do what was right for her—no matter what it was. Looking around at all the familiar faces, Sage knew she would miss her friends on the Genny very much if she left it for another post. What to do…?

Just then, her ears tuned to a voice she didn’t recognize. With a slight turn of her head, she saw Cmdr Petursson only a few feet away.
