“I don’t know if we get to make that decision for them Ensign.” Marius turned at the screen. “Hundreds of worlds used fusion power without immolating themselves, Many times more than those who did. In any case they would be safer with our help than without.”

“Scan their current reactors… its curious that they mentioned them so readily.”

Marius

“ I just wonder what kind of damage has already accord” Tigress said as she started the scan. “ scan is running I’ll let you when I get the results captain” Tigress said.
Ensign Tigress

Magnus turned to the Captain “Well it is Starfleet Policy to deal with new Species with openness and trust until proven otherwise” He smiled “If they are anything like other first Contacts they’re probably so in awe of our technology that they daren’t lie to us. Did you not detect them from several days away at our maximum speeds, that’s so far beyond their comprehension we might as well be wizards”

XO

Deeg chimed in at this point. “S-sirs,” he began, his stutter acting up. “They primarily utilize fission nuclear plants. Their outputs are generally higher than average. It is what they use on their s-ships as well. Scans of their news indicates research into fusion and unsuccessful experimentation.”
- Deeg, Eng NE

“That seems unremarkable,” Marius faced the screen as he rubbed the goatee he wore. “Anything on the scan of gravity wells? Particular the one that they lost three probes to.” He didn’t surmise the gravity well itself would be a problem for the Genesis, but he doubted the problem was as straight forwards as they reported it to be.

Marius CO

Deeg agreed. There was nothing unremarkable about their developing technology. Sure their power outputs on their nuclear plants were impressive and they had done work toward that, but in the end, fission was still fission. It was so 20th Century. Deeg had slept through those classes in grade 6. Pirates were interesting though, and they between this homeworld and the colony. They wouldn’t be aliens; that would be silly, unless the aliens had taken over the colony and was perpetuating the mystery of the lack of communication of the colony. But the missing probes. That was interesting.

“Moving sensors to scan the s-s-space between here and the nearest star,” Deeg said. “If there is a gravity well or planetoid we should pick it out. It’s not that far away.” His fingers moved carefully on the board, himself leaning in and squinting at the small screen before him as though he would find out anything more that way.
- Deeg, NE Eng

OOC: I think this fell off, still scanning for gravity wells, pirates, and the general status of their reactor tech/risk.

Luke

The scans finally detected some debris on a large asteroid about one light month from Pallas. The asteroid could have been a large chunk of a planet that was blown off from a star’s nova. From the direction of the asteroid’s movement, it was possible that the star system it originated from within Federation space. The radiation energies corresponded to a recorded nova half a century ago. From what were the components of the probe, the first detection of the asteroid probably reached Pallas after the probe had been caught by the gravity of the moving asteroid. It was not the normal gravity wells that Starfleet ships were accustomed to because the Pallasians’ technology and experience were still at the beginnings of space travel.

GM

Magnus read over the sensor report on his console “It appears as though they’ve got a potential Federation Citizen living in their backyard” he said referring to the hunk of planet: Turning to the Captain he spoke plainly “Well it appears as though we’ve made some proper first contact here”

XO

Tom looked around the bridge for a moment longer the approached the turbo lift preparing to return to his office.

  • Tom, IntSec

“That’s a lot of back math to make that presumption.” Marius could read the computer screen. “It also suggests that they are pretty bad at their gravity calculations.” He looked at the asteroid for a moment longer.

“There should be three probes on that rock, right?” He looked at Magnús Pétursson. “That’s free examples of their tech without having to ‘illegally’ obtain it.” He spun and sat down in the Captain’s chair. “Mr. Petursson, take a team and a shuttle and bring me those probes.”

Marius CO

Deeg studied the results. The others were ahead of him on this. His forte was engineering, not science and it took him a little longer to work things through. Given the details of the asteroid and its likely source, it looked benign - well to them, not the probes it swallowed. To get more than one? What was the trajectory of that asteroid anyway? Was it heading for the Pallosian system? He leaned in to check though only had limited triangulation ability to work with.

“Maybe the shuttle could make a pass by their colony on the way back?” Deeg suggested. “Or at least scan for the pi-pirates that they talked about.”
- Deeg, NE Eng

Magnus nodded as he stood up. With two shuttles on the ground, he’d have to take their runabout. A more effective craft for a mission of this type he thought “Yes, Sir” He turned around and started walking towards the turbolift, halting before making it halfway there. With all the Department Heads on the planet, he’d have to pick junior officers. Officers he wouldn’t know much about. He turned to the Catian Scientist “Ensign, you’re with me.” Then turned to Deeg “Crewman, please inform Engineering that I’ll need one of their officers in Shuttlebay one.” He informed the engineer before moving to leave the Bridge.

XO

Deeg nodded. “Aye,” he replied, and turned to scan the available roster for who was at the top of the away team lists. =^= NE Bat to Shuttlebay One for an Away Mission. I repeat NE Bat to Sh-Shuttlebay One. Standard Gear. =^=

NE Deeg looking through the list at other NE’s of our good Dagen <G>

“ sir “ Tigress said there was question and surprise in her voice. She did not normally get picked for away missions. She quietly left her station and followed the XO off the bridge.
Ensign Tigress

Tom and stepped into the turbo lift a moment before them. He made eye contact and nodded to each one as he waited for the XO to order the lift into motion.

  • Tom, IntSec

Marius looked at the internal security officer for a moment, tapped his comm and mouthed some words that were too low for anyone to hear. Although if someone could read lips it looked a lot like Marius was saying a name and reading off a star-date.

Marius CO

OOC: Sorry I missed this. I guess I’ve gotten a bit disheartened tryign to fit Tom in somewhere that makes sense.

Tom could read lips rather well, and in over fifty Human and nonHuman languages. He noted the name and stardate.

Tom turned his head towards Marius and brushed at non-existent lint and gave a brief wink with the eye that was away from, and out of view of, everyone but Marius.

  • Tom, IntSec

Marius tilted his head. He was caught, probably not for the first time, but given what he knew about Jarvis this was the only way for him to keep track of the man. Record his action, review the tape, write it down. It was that or constantly be surprised when he showed up.

Deeg went back to monitoring things. It was nearly time to do the ‘routines’ of checking systems and primary arenas of the ship to make sure they were still green lining. He wouldn’t doubt that given the nature of things that ‘something’ was bound to go wrong. Maybe no bug eyed monsters this time. Perhaps some space sirens calling them all to a vacuum filled ecstasy experience .. till they just blew up. Hmmm. Yes, lets focus on the green lines he thought as the data scrolled past him.

Counselor Dekker’s voice came over the comm system =/\=Away Team One to the Genesis. We are moving into a public space with our hosts to gain a better understanding of their culture. Their ultimate goal seems to be stronger ties with the Federation, including technological exchange, perhaps to the point of application for admission. We are continuing our fact finding mission.=/\=

Dekker, CNS

=/\=McGregor to Genesis. Our hosts have shared some more information about the pirate groups. It appears they splintered off from the military in the early days of space exploration, before the planet truly unified under one government. Since then, they’ve apparently all been re- absorbed or killed.=/\=

COS

=^=That sounds ominous, or convenient. In either case, please continue your relations.=^= Marius would make note of it in his official report for whoever would read it.

Marius CO

Deeg turned around to listen to the report. “That contravenes other reports that we noted in government files saying there was no contact with the colony and that the pirates were still active,” he said. His sense of ‘thinking the worst’ at least in a conspiratorial and political way. There was more to this story than met the eye, or at least news reporting. A swing through there would be valuable to at least scan things and this elusive colony. Did it even exist? Had it ever existed? So many possibilities.
