“Yes, they’re all rigorous in different ways. I suppose it depends on where your interests lie. Medical, I believe, would be especially rigorous. You see, right now, you only have one species to contend with. Imagine if you had many more.” she explained not wanting to give too many details.

“Starfleet has a more rigorous training as Lt Reia said. But civilian craft does is not as demanding for it is like any mercantile vessel - very focused in objective.” He gave a nod to Reia. “Medicine is daunting indeed with many species to be aware of. Or of being up on the knowledge of the different species beyond the medical - their history and psychology just to name two.” He added those as that would be in Reia’s department. “I think somethings that engineering, my own area of expertise is the easiest of them.”

“Well that would be discounting mine, which is 90 percent ‘stand still and look threatening,’” Thomas said, returning to the table. “I can honestly say this is the most fun and engaging on- duty trip I’ve had in years.”

COS

Shou continued to look wistful. “I suppose that until our government applies to be part of your Federation, letting our guys experience Starfleet training would be just a dream …”

GM

Dagen smiled. “It’s school,” he said. “It is never that dramatic.” Bringing it into the now, Dagen said, “Perhaps as you are here and have ‘experience’ with us Starfleet people you may be placed on the consultation team which would take you into space.” While that might be a long shot it was worth a shot to help Shou’s spirits that seemed to ebb and flow. “What was it like to grow up here?” he asked.
- Dagen, CE

“I was born in another part of the continent on a farm. I grew up knowing how to keep the crop going. I did well in school and was offered a scholarship. My parents told me to decide whether to stay or go. They were very supportive. I knew little of city life when I first arrived for college but I coped. One of the reasons I took this job at the medical facility was that I knew what it was really like to go fishing at the lake. I knew how to take it slow in the country. I mean … we need to allow nature to take her time. Impatience and stress do not give us good crops. I like the slower pace of life, I suppose that because I grew up in the country, I am able to appreciate the trees and the rivers and the lakes. It was hard work to, weeding and making sure we do not have worms on the leaves. However I also enjoy the good harvest through hard work.”

GM

“When I was young, growing up on Trill, the ‘men’ of the family would go off into the mountains. My grandfather was the force behind this, and said that those before him did the same. We would hike in the mountains, take in the nature and the streams and beauty. We would talk about what it meant to be a steward of what we had, and of being a man, of living off the land and camping. We would go for two weeks. Sometimes we would just hike. Sometimes we would take a ‘readle’, or canoe as they call it on earth and travel the lakes and rivers. It was .. really good.” There was a trace of emotion in his voice. Regret? Sadness? “Nobody wants to save something they don’t care about. It sounds like you care a lot, Shou.”
- Dagen

Thomas’ stomach took that moment to let off a rather loud rumble.

“Sorry,” he said, face turning slightly red. “I don’t suppose you included a spot of lunch on that itinerary?” he asked the Pallasians.

COS

Reia smiled amiably at Thomas. Luckily her stomach hadn’t betrayed her yet.

“What my colleague is saying about his trips sounds like Walkabout where I’m from, except for all the manly stuff.” she explained to Shou.

“My apologies,” said Shou, who sounded embarrassed. “I was supposed to let you see the facility and bring you to our nutrition centre where we hope you could sample some of the food we eat.” He pointed to the door at the far side of the room. “Let’s go through there.”

They were led through another corridor and reached a large hall. There were several Pallasians already there seated and speaking to one another. When they entered the room, the chatter carried on, but as soon as one of them spotted the Starfleet officers, the room quietened down until no one spoke but looked intently on the group that had just walked into the door.

“Please continue as you are,” said Shou. “We just have special visitors,” he explained. He led the team through the stares and reached a counter.

“We believe that we should have a balanced nutrition. We have the foods here that provide energy,” Shou pointed to a selection of roots and grain. “Here we have the foods that provide the building blocks of the body.” The selection was that of what looked like animal produce. “We also need trace nutrition for body functions.” The next group of foods looked like fruits and leaves from plants.

GM

“Another area in which we’re very similar,” Thomas commented, looking over the food on offer to try and spot comparisons to foods common to Earth, or any other Federation world. Hell, as hungry as he was in that moment, he’d even try the Pallasian version of plomeek soup.

COS

Reia was curious if these foods would be compatible with the team’s biology and made choices carefully.
