OOC: Sorry I missed this. I guess I’ve gotten a bit disheartened tryign to fit Tom in somewhere that makes sense.

Tom could read lips rather well, and in over fifty Human and nonHuman languages. He noted the name and stardate.

Tom turned his head towards Marius and brushed at non-existent lint and gave a brief wink with the eye that was away from, and out of view of, everyone but Marius.

  • Tom, IntSec

Marius tilted his head. He was caught, probably not for the first time, but given what he knew about Jarvis this was the only way for him to keep track of the man. Record his action, review the tape, write it down. It was that or constantly be surprised when he showed up.

Deeg went back to monitoring things. It was nearly time to do the ‘routines’ of checking systems and primary arenas of the ship to make sure they were still green lining. He wouldn’t doubt that given the nature of things that ‘something’ was bound to go wrong. Maybe no bug eyed monsters this time. Perhaps some space sirens calling them all to a vacuum filled ecstasy experience .. till they just blew up. Hmmm. Yes, lets focus on the green lines he thought as the data scrolled past him.
- Deeg, NE

Counselor Dekker’s voice came over the comm system =/\=Away Team One to the Genesis. We are moving into a public space with our hosts to gain a better understanding of their culture. Their ultimate goal seems to be stronger ties with the Federation, including technological exchange, perhaps to the point of application for admission. We are continuing our fact finding mission.=/\=

Dekker, CNS

=/\=McGregor to Genesis. Our hosts have shared some more information about the pirate groups. It appears they splintered off from the military in the early days of space exploration, before the planet truly unified under one government. Since then, they’ve apparently all been re- absorbed or killed.=/\=

COS

=^=That sounds ominous, or convenient. In either case, please continue your relations.=^= Marius would make note of it in his official report for whoever would read it.

Marius CO

=/\=Will do, Captain. McGregor out.=/\=

Deeg turned around to listen to the report. “That contravenes other reports that we noted in government files saying there was no contact with the colony and that the pirates were still active,” he said. His sense of ‘thinking the worst’ at least in a conspiratorial and political way. There was more to this story than met the eye, or at least news reporting. A swing through there would be valuable to at least scan things and this elusive colony. Did it even exist? Had it ever existed? So many possibilities.
- Deeg, Eng

Marius looked at the engineer, “I have two teams on the ground and the XO in a runabout.” He shook his head. “Just going to have to put a tack in that one until i get a team back. Unless we can get a scan from here.” He looked hopefully over to science.

CO

“Wouldn’t take more than a small course change to make the return approach along that route,” Deeg commented. If they could travel half way to the nearest star they could swing around a few billion kilometers on the return trip without batting an eye. He was curious. His ‘old’ self was itching to delve into the closed government records to know what they were and are up to around this colony. However, that was a closed door, but he could still try to work out what was going on. Or the runabout could. A scan could easily make it that distance, Deeg knew. Transmissions. Energy readings. if they were there.
- Deeg, Eng

Marius looked between the chief engineer and his helmsman. One of many decisions he would have to make. Some of them minute but when coupled together could mean so much and risk the lives of his crew. “We have 20 crew members between the planet and the runabout. Pirates and anomalies,” He clenched his fist as he thought. The ligaments cracking as he applied pressure, force greater physically than most could do, but it was the mental pressure that could get to people.

“Is that course possible?” He asked the helms officer. “I’m not going to lose a person on my first day of command because I pulled the Genesis out of position.”

OOC: Grrr .. lost my post! er, CE’s NE paranoid sit in actually ..
IC:

Deeg could feel the tension and the pressure that the new Captain was feeling. While he could appreciate that and what a command post and decision could be on the psyche, he didn’t see it as much here. Even with his own paranoid mind working at this. “Sir, support wise the runabout is more at risk now being a couple of light years away than swinging by mere billions of kilometers away. If anything was to come up we could respond with the Genny in minutes. We can prepare in advance though. Scans could be made in that area for energy signatures, life signs or anything suggesting habitation. The runabout could, on approach, send out a probe to scan the area as well as their own sensors in the region would detect anything well in advance of their arrival especially with the technological difference here.” What Deeg didn’t say was that Bot could put the pilots to sleep with his talking and the runabout crash somewhere …
- Deeg, Eng NE

“Transporter range is 50,000 kilometers, and I could personally take out either landing party in 10 seconds. Far less than the several minutes it would take us to cover a billion kilometers.” He thought to himself probably less. “The runabout is far more technologically advanced then this race and likely the pirates that are plaguing it. I doubt they are in the same degree of risk from a hostile party.”

He took a breath, “Collect what information you can from here. If you find a reason for a more detail scan, we can hope over then.”

Marius CO

Deeg pondered what the Captain said. He was thinking on a different level than Deeg, and that was okay. Still he didn’t precisely think that the diplomatic party was in danger of more than indigestion. “I will start with sensors in the region then follow that up with a deeper look at the records I can find in their open systems.”

With that Deeg brought up the main sensors. Not wanting to ‘show’ all that they had, Deeg powered them up just enough to get a scan out, more of a pinpoint scan that would take a series of ‘shots’ to make a panoramic scan of the area. It would take time to do. A full scan would take less time but they had been careful to date on showing off their strength. By doing this it would limit what they might see Deeg doing, but still yield the results they were looking for. As the sensors took the different ‘shots’ and the field of view began to be filled in slowly, Deeg watched the screen.
- Deeg, ENG

The scans of the asteroid field showed very little. It did show the extremely low probability of pirate activity. On the other hand, the scans of the moons of the planet where the Pallasian mining colony was showed that there was an underground base in the largest moon. On searching the information in the Pallasian public information network, the moon was mined for minerals in the early days of the colony and had been exhausted. It was abandoned because the colonists felt that it was too dangerous and so they sealed the two entrances to the mine. However, scans showed that there were two other entrances that were relatively new. These entrances were used for the launching of the ships. At the moment, there were four ships in the base and at least twenty life signs present. They were so well hidden that visuals would not reveal them. The Pallasians did not have the technology to scan into the mines and so were not able to detect the pirates.

GM

OOC: This is or is not the asteroid that the runabout was investigating?

OOC: Pallasians colonised another planet in their system. This is the moon of that other planet. The asteroid field is outside the Pallasian system.

IC:
“I’ve got something, sir,” Deeg said after double checking his scan. “On the moon that their colony is there is an abandoned mine. The Pallasians closed it for safety reasons but scans show new construction and two new entrances. Scans read four ships and at least 20 life signs. I don’t think the Pallasian scanners would pick that up.”
- Deeg

“Well do you think they are being dishonest or are they poorly informed?” Marius had his own personal opinion based on several decades of being disappointed by people, but he liked to pause for a moment and hear the opinions of someone a little less jaded than he.

“Four ships, size? tactical assessment?” It was likely that they weren’t any concern to the Genesis, but he would like to know before he did something.

Marius

The four ships were old and in need of various repairs but are still functioning and would do damage to the Pallasian freighters but were outmatched by the weapons on the Genesis.

GM

Suddenly a comm channel from the runabout ringed =^=This is Runabout team 1, We’ve secured the probe and are accessing its information as we speak, we’ve also picked up a Pallasian warp trail leading deeper into unknown space. I was considering taking us in further, try and see where they went”=^= The voice of the new first officer chimed through.

XO

=^=You’re a little ship, with little firepower. Don’t get yourself shot at or start a diplomatic incident with too much snooping. You just got here, I’d hate to have to get a new XO.=^= Was Marius’ reply. The runabout had better sensors and should be able to out run anything the Pallasian had so the ship should be safe.

=^=Away team, see if you can get any information on their colony and the moon around it. We’ve picked up some ships there and want to know how much they know about them.=^=

Marius CO

Dagen replied with what they had received from their hosts. =^= Thor here. We did ask about the colony. Our hosts gave indication that they did colonize the world though had an issue with pirates. That fostered an increase in their space military to help deal with them. However, as they said, after a time they stopped receiving signals from the colony itself and following up was either not done or is not on public record. It does raise the question of why they weren’t concerned enough about their colony to send a well armed force there to see what happened to it. =^=
- Dagen, CE

=^=Even if they aren’t concerned, I am… I’m going to move the Genesis off to take a peek at the colony. That will pull out out of transporter range. Don’t get yourself in to too much trouble while we are away.+6=

“Mr Deeg, your wish has come true.” Marius faced the helm officer, “Take us out, plot a course for the colony world, I want a quick trip there, then a slow approach… don’t want to startle one of those ships.”

Marius.

=/\=Acknowledged, Genesis. We’re just meeting the locals.=/\=

Dekker, CNS
