The shuttle noted were able to detect several entrances and exits at the point where they were to meet. There was a clearing nearby for the shuttle to land. The next clearing would be about 1 kilometre away from the meeting point. That would mean a thirty minute trek, at least, through the forest before reaching the rendezvous.

GM

Deeg brought up a 3D holo of the area as they were on approach. On the way he had given Park a transmitter that would link to the shuttle transporter for an emergency transport if needed. “They certainly have a number of bolt holes,” he commented, his eyes darting about from one place in the video to another. He pointed to the closest approach. “They know we’re coming. No point in giving us a longer walk.” He scanned for any missiles or weapons that might be able to target them there.
– Deeg

There were two men hidden in a hiding hole about 20 metres from the clearing they were supposed to meet in. From a tactical point of view, they would either be wanting to ambush the away team, or it was a backup in case the away team tried something funny.

Other than that, there were no weapons that could attack then during their walk from their landing point to the meeting point. Whilst there were missiles present, they were not armed or prepped.

GM

Deeg looked over at Park. “You’re the tactics person. What do you think? Realistically there is no reason to ambush us.” While Deeg said that his general paranoia elevated. There was a lot of reasons to so ambush them. Fear being one of them. Their thinking they were in kahoots with the pirates was another. Their own sense of piracy in not knowing what they could do combined with a desire to have their technology. Well, risk was something they did by stepping out into space. He looked at Park for his opinion. “At least they’re not targeting the shuttle with missiles. That’s something. Usually people want to shoot at us.”
- Deeg, NE

They passed the point where there were two people hidden, but nothing happened. After walking another 100 metres, two other people came from behind a rock ahead of the two Starfleet officers. Whilst the tricorder was able to detect the two of them coming from a tunnel behind the rock, the optical illusion of them appearing from nowhere was intended to surprise the Pallasians themselves.

“Like we’ve just past CheckPoint Charlie,” Deeg muttered softly. The six were separating even more. Two behind. “Two more just ahead,” he said not many seconds before they appeared. “Clever,” he commented as he studied the Pallasians. This was Deeg’s first face to face with these new aliens beyond research and transmissions. He glanced over at Park. He was apparently the strong silent type while Deeg was the nervous mousey chatty type.

“Please put away your communication devices,” said one of them, pointing to the tricordesr the Starfleet officers were holding. “Please do not test our faith in you but transmitting our positions to the home planet.”

GM

Hurtle number one coming up. Deeg’s thoughts went fast. He rather thought ‘so what’? The majority of the colonists went back to the home planet so what did they care? He might as well start with the truth and then work backwards. “These are not communications devices and they do not transmit.” Okay, half truth. “There is no share in technology with your people yet and do not know that we are here. We are explorers and these tablets scan and record. One of the mottos of our organization is to seek out new life and new civilizations.”

They challenged him. He would see what they say. “I was on our mother ship when your group said that most of the colonists returned to see us.” He let it stand there, implying that there was no reason for them paranoia, but he wanted to see what they said. Was ‘this’ it? Only six ‘colonists’ left?
- Deeg, NE ENG

“You say you are explorers … Why have you come to our planet? Out of all the planets in the universe, why come here. You have seen … you can go back. I warn you, don’t get involved in our matters. Leave the planet. We do not want anything to tip the balance.”

GM

Deeg sensed the challenge in the tone. Was there something else? Fear? It was hard to tell with aliens. They expressed emotions differently and this was Deeg’s first time. He should have spent time watching their sit coms before coming down here. “We were traveling and detected one of your ships at a distance attempting a faster than light drive that .. failed. We contacted them to see if we could help, and your home world invited us.”

He glanced at Park then delved on. “We are not on the side of your homeworld. I suspect that our visit here would not be endorsed. We did it anyway. We simply seek the truth. There are many different races in the galaxy and with your homeworld venturing out you will run into them and they will run into you. What balance are you talking about? They talk about pirates. We see a few people here and on the moon that by any definition are not so. The world says that they lost contact with this colony over time with some talk about pirates. Yet you say they traveled back implying contact. Your world has suggested they might apply for membership to our Federation. For that to happen we need to know what is going on. And right now everyone is hiding. Why? What?”
- Deeg

“I see that you have been speaking to the mainworlders. So, do you believe them?” asked the man with a sneer.
