Generally speaking, when clearing any location Magnus prefered to start from the top and work his way down. Tactical thinking that was ingrained in him from his early years in the Academies Advanced Tactics course. However, when touring a ship he found it easier to understand how it and the crew function if he started in the heart of the ship. So after finishing his early morning exercises, sufficiently breaking his fast and spending a good long while shaving his face and sculpting his hair he put his combadge on and swaggered to the nearest turbolift and made his way down to Main Engineering.

After arriving he made his way to the centre of the room and took a moment to look at the main Warp core. After sufficiently admiring the large glowing cylinder he made his way up the Chief Engineers office and pressed the chime.

XO

A Vulcan answered the door, surprisingly. She was short for a Vulcan, but stunningly lovely with fine pronounced cheekbones and an elegance to her brows that was mesmerizing. She bore lt jg pips. There was only a moment’s pause. “Welcome Commander.” She lifted her hand, fingers splayed in the traditional salute. “Live long and prosper. My name is Seraph, though many here call me Angel. Logically you must be looking for Lt Thor. He is down on Deck 20 looking at our available parts storage. There was something he was looking for there that he had brought on board before it launched. He called it a ‘barbie’.” Her tone suggested that she wasn’t sure what he was precisely meaning. “How may I be of assistance?”
- Dagen for Seraph

Magnus’s face went from a polite smile to one of genuine delight, so many words that you wouldn’t expect a Vulcan to say. He quickly suppressed the look for the sake of courtesy “You’ve already been of assistance Lieutenant, I’m looking for the Chief” The Commander winked as he tapped his Combadge =^=Karlson to Thor, I’m standing outside the Chief Engineers office looking for said Chief Engineer and Lieutenant Angel here tells me that he’s looking for his barbie?” There was a clear humorous tone in his voice “You wouldn’t happen to be heading up to your office anytime soon would you?=^=

XO

Angel dipped her head in silent acceptance, followed by the classic brow raise, but oh so elegantly done! at the Commander’s wink.

The channel opened and there was the sound of, =^= Bring that around this way, yeah. Commander .. =^= the voice began then was followed by .. =^= no wait a .. momen =^= The sound of what was like metal clattering to the deck but not just in one short clanging episode but one that went on for many seconds, followed by the sound of what might in another century be a hubcap spinning and coming to a whirling stop.

Angel’s expression was akin to ‘It happens’ ..

=^= Ah Commander. Just .. yes, just move those back up in place and then bring that up to the main shuttle bay. Er, Commander, I’m on my way up. =^=

True to form, Dagen made his way up into main engineering deck 18 a couple of minutes later. “Sorry sir, I was getting things ready for the Engineering barbecue that I’m planning.”
- Dagen, CE

“Indeed” The Commander answered suppressing a smirk “Well Lieutenant it is your lucky day, I’m performing somewhat of a surprise inspection if you will, Captain wanted be to get to know the Senior staff a little better and understand how you work. You don’t mind walking me around and showing me the ropes I hope?”

XO

“Of course, Commander. My style is collaborative. The Genny is not a large ship, but she still has a fair crew.” Dagen gestured for him to follow. “Today is testing and overhaul of the auxiliary bridge. I have a team that will be helping me.” He passed Magnus a small smirk. “You’ve met Bot already. Maybe you can lend a hand and be a part of this. I was hoping to test out the saucer separation.”

“Normally I start the day with a meeting with my team leads to see what is the issues and delegate tasks. We did that earlier. I’ll do this again with the Beta shift when they come on and before I go off, and I meet early with the Gamma shift to understand what has been happening there and see that the general maintenance is being done. Each team lead looks after 6 to 10 crewmen. Alpha shift is my largest group at approximately a dozen while Gamma will be half that. She is a new ship and we’ve not been battered about yet so keeping up on maintenance is a priority and fairly routine.”
- Dagen, CE

OOC: Bump

Magnus nodded “I’d be delighted, not often that you get to test the Aux-bridge” He put his hands behind his back and clasped them “The last few ships I served on were all older ladies, tougher than all hell but you could feel the creaking in their bones, is it a bigger, smaller or just plain different challenge dealing with such a new ship.” He asked.

OOC: Oops ..

They passed down the corridor. “That is hard to say, sir. I was part of the team that helped build this ship so in terms of knowledge I have that and am not coming onto the ship and having to learn all the little idiosyncrasies that she has, not to mention where things are and the unique way they work together. So with her being new I know the ship.” He held up a finger. “But.” They rounded a corner and he continued, nodding to a science crewman carrying what looked to be a portable test kit. “But .. once she was out in space all the hidden character bits started to come out. We don’t have the same issues as a ship that has gone through battles and this or that area showing weakness or needing more attention. That makes it a smaller footprint for maintenance challenges. But as she is new there is a lot of testing and ensuring that the nuts and stembolts are not coming loose on us.” Dagen chuckled, coming up to the turbolift. “There is always something to do.”
Dagen

Magnus nodded in understanding “Instead of one big problem its dozens or hundreds of small problems or potential problems” He summarized “I think she might be the newest ship I’ve served on. How’s your staff?” He asked

XO

Dagen smiled. “The technical term is risk management. The vernacular is preventative maintenance. With her being essentially on a shakedown I want to see how she is running.” He grinned. “There isn’t a warranty on starships.” They exited on Deck 7 and Dagen continued through the corridor. “She is fresh off the docks. Can’t get any newer unless you were on the construction crew like I was.”

Magnus nodded with interest, he’d never spent much time around Engineers expect conversations with the Chiefs during his other tours. Information was always useful.

Turning the corridor that led to the auxiliary bridge Dagen replied. “Mostly good. I mean beings are beings. You get ones which are switched on and others that need their switches flicked. Starfleet does crank through good officers - and I’m trying to be present with them to bring everyone up to a standard or higher. The general staff, the crewmen, are the ones who are variable. One can’t just swap them out as you’re getting like for like. It’s really only the senior officers who are vetted by by the captain or yourself. Crewmen are simply assigned and they are a mixed bag. I did manage to get a couple of crews worth of crewmen from the construction crews to replace those who mustered out, but,” he shrugged here, “I’m encouraging the crew leaders to raise the standard. They can do the job. What I want is to get them to like the job and do it well.” They came to the doors. “Do you have any suggestions, sir?”
- Dagen, CE

“Hmm” Magnus took a moment to think “Well My suggestion is organizing with your senior-most NonCom, I haven’t had time to look through all of them but I assume you have one if only unofficially. Through them find out which crewmen excel at which jobs, put them to work with the right officers based on your own thoughts and suggestions from your Chief NonCom. Natural leaders show themselves on Starships, at least that’s been my experience as Department Head. Honestly, since I made Command I haven’t had enough time to get properly involved with the general Crew outside of necessary involvement.” He admitted “Testing always works, seeing what makes them tick and the like”

They made it to the doors of the auxiliary bridge. “Chief Rorke. Susan Rorke.” He nodded. “I’ve been so focused on getting the officers up to a state that I’ve not thought beyond that. I’ll do that sir.” Susan Rorke was a ‘temp’ as it were assigned with the ship at her launch to help with ensuring that things well, work. Since she had been a ‘temp’ and would be leaving at the end of this cruise Dagen had mentally dismissed her as someone to not keep up with. He needed to fix that.

Magnus hesitated for a moment “Lieutenant. During Counselor Dekkers party the other night I couldn’t help noticing that you seemed to recognize me” He said calmly, had he been any other man he probably would have felt great awkwardness in declaring someone else thoughts but he was not someone else “I didn’t wish to disturb your deep discussions with our Intelligence Chief so I didn’t ask but since we have some time, have we met?” He asked curiously. An odd question for sure but the look bothered him as he prided himself in his excellent mind for faces so when he didn’t recognize the Trill he thoguht it bore investigating.

XO

Dagen’s hand reached out to the biometric panel that would identify him. His hand halted just shy of the display. Flushing red from the ‘gotcha’ around Reia, he hoped it wasn’t anger that was showing, or whether it was anger that was covered by his blush. Slowly retracting his hand he turned to Magnus. He had tried to forget about that, and had mostly succeeded. Certainly he had recognized him at the party and had tried the to say the past was the past. And had managed to drown that out since then with his mind more on Reia than in seeing Magnus again. “Only once, Commander. You sat at the panel of my Courts Martial for striking Admiral Bennett.” While he had avoided an official sentence he had spent two months in a military prison awaiting the courts.
- Dagen

Magnus watched the Trill’s reaction with great interest his facial expression completely neutral. He took a moment to simply look at the Engineer with quiet fascination “Hmm quite, that’s some memory you have there Mr Thor” A half-smile returned to his face “It’s been what ten years?” he asked without waiting for an answer “A fresh-faced Commander sitting on an actual assault charge against a flag officer, it was quite the Scandal as I recall” AFter a moment he indicated to the panel “Shall we?” He asked casually.

XO

“That’s one thing about having a symbiot, Commander. One rarely really forgets something.” Dagen nodded. The decade had made a change in the commander’s face. Some lines had appeared around the mouth and eyes. “The Counselor had urged the parties, ah, us, to forgive and forget.” Dagen shrugged. “Since it was something that happened in public the Admiral was less .. charitous.” He let out a single small chortle then put his hand on the sensor.

As it worked through the identifier Dagen reminded himself that he was not feeling that much charity either then. Yes the entire scene had been emotionally charged at a time when Dagen was not doing so well emotionally. Truly he did deserve what he got and he was okay with that. His thoughts were interrupted with the computer =^= Voice and retina scan =^= He leaned in closer to the scanner and let the computer scan. =^= Thor, Dagen, Chief Engineer =^= The security was moderate here at the moment and didn’t require heartbeat and other scans.

The doors slid open with a light swish. Inside the more compact bridge was well lit - and a mess. The four others in the team were on the deck, hunched over an open panel or stretched behind the folded out main viewscreen. “Welcome to chaos, commander,” Dagen said. He moved in ahead of the commander and said, “Report.”

Bot appeared out from behind the navigational console. “Ah Lt, we are making good progress.”
Julia, a tall dark eyed brunette muttered not far from them with a half smile, “Once Bot had something more to do than talk that is.”
NE Sebastian pulled his short frame out from behind the viewscreen. “All hardware nodes are upgraded and scanned. Software packages are up to date. We’re nearly through our physical inspections.” He looked over them through his DG’s .. or his Data Glasses. “One gel pack was found corrupted and replaced. We have had it sent down for analysis.”
Deeg was sitting nervously to the side giving Sebastian an ‘eye’.
“And we did find something else. Deeg found it. It looks like a DCD .. uh, a data clone device tacked onto a primary link to the viewscreen. Like a key logger of old this would take in anything done here. No transmission link though so it would have to be physically removed. By Deeg’s estimation it had been there since launch.”
Dagen cast a look at the XO. That wasn’t good but neither was it a crisis; this bridge had been all but deserted.
