After meeting with the Security Chief Magnus made his way up to the Main Science Labs. This was to be the main course of his trip across the ship. The Genesis was a science-focused vessel and he would be reading a lot of Scientific reports during his time here. For the third time this day he checked to see if any hairs were out of place then straightened out his uniform and pressed the chime to the CSO’s office.

An NE was passing by, and stopped at the sight of the First Officer waiting outside Lt. Michaels’ office. She cleared her throat softly.

“Excuse me sir, are you looking for Lieutenant Michaels?” the NE asked, a hint of nervousness in her voice. “He’s in his ‘other’ office” The way the woman emphasized the word other was peculiar. “Stellar Cartography. One deck down sir.”

“Why thank you ensign” Magnus said with a smile before turning around and moving on. He hadn’t even considered that the man wouldn’t be in his office.

Upon arrival at the Stellar Cartography lab, the XO would find David standing in front of the large viewscreen. On the display was a star chart, and it was clear that the systems were not their current location.

“Planning your vacation Lieutenant?” The Icelander said with humorous intent as he walked up to the viewscreen. “I wasn’t aware that there was much work to be done here” He said in a curious manner.

XO

David smiled. “If only…” He said softly, then shook his head slightly as if brushing off the idea. “No, not much work to be done here, that is true. Which is one reason I do sometimes come here to work. I can be alone with my thoughts and don’t have one of my sub-department heads ringing the chime every five minutes.” David let out a soft chuckle.

“Glad you enjoyed the little get together we had for you the other night,” David said. “Riley was quite excited about it, and I know it made him happy that everyone was enjoying themselves as they were.”

Magnus nodded “It was an entertaining night, please send my regards if I don’t meet him today.” He placed his hands behind his back, not looking from the map “The Captain asked me to meet with the department heads and have a little discussion about their respective departments. I suppose I’ll be spending most of my day with you overviewing your multiple subdepartments” He said with a half chuckle “Tell me, your departments do they generally run their own experiments and the like under the direction of each Sub-DH or do you direct the general direction they go?” He asked with genuine curiosity.

XO

“I give them considerable freedom,” David said, a smug smile creeping on his lips. “Although there are times where they do follow any…” He paused, the smile getting bigger. “… Guidelines that I provide them.” He let out a soft chuckle. “We do have quite a large department, but I believe things run smoothly for us.”

David noticed the XO’s eyes fixated on the map. He let out a sigh. Best to get the elephant in the room cleared up. “It’s my home,” He said, nodding towards the viewscreen, folding his arms across his chest.

“Indeed” Magnus said with a half-smile “Indeed it is. Is your home a part of some project of yours or are you simply nostalgic?” He asked out of honest curiosity, there wasn’t any malice in voice.

XO

David sighed. “Nostalgia I suppose.” He gave his shoulders a shrug. “It’s not like I’ll ever be going back there. This is just a representation of how things were when I left. It could app be changed now.” There was a sadness in his eyes, but it only lasted a moment.

Switching off the main view screen, David turned back to the XO, a smile on his face. “Where would you like to go first on our little tour?”

-David Michaels, CSO

Magnus didn’t look from the map for a moment as he contemplated the Scientists words. Turning to face the man and returning his smile “Oh you decide, science has never been my area of expertise and a Science vessel has too many places for me to even think where to begin.”

XO

David nodded. “Perhaps we will start on Deck 4 with our botany and hydroponics bays. Did you know that some of my team have organized a small group of chefs for the crew mess? They grow a lot of produce and a variety of herbs and serve fresh cooked meals to the crew a few times a week. It’s been a great project for getting the crew involved and working together.”
