OOC: This thread is divorced from the main sim’s timeline.

IC: Riley exited the turbolift on to the Bridge and nodded a greeting toward the duty officer as he made a quick bee line to the Captain’s Ready Room. According to the computer Marius was in and Riley had just the routine business excuse he’d been looking for to command a bit of the new CO’s attention. He tapped the padd he held in his right hand against the palm of his left before he pressed the chime.

Dekker, CNS

“Come,” Came the clipped response from the Newly Frocked Captain. Actually, he wasn’t frocked it was all official… it just happened to be very fast. Marius looked up from behind his computer screen as he watched the door open.

Riley walked through the doors entering a room he knew well, but had changed. He hadn’t had an opportunity to glimpse the ship’s Ready Room since its occupant had changed and his dark eyes to a moment to take in both the familiar and the new. Only after he finished his cursory evaluation of the space did his gaze alight upon the man behind the desk. Julien was no small man, but Marius was bigger, and his frame behind the desk provided the most poignant contrast with the past.

“Do you have a moment, Captain?” Riley approached Marius’s desk, but remained standing. He held the padd he carried in front of him. “I have the latest enlisted evaluations. There are a few recommendations for promotion and assignment change that need your review and approval.”

Dekker, CNS

Marius looked at him with dark eyes. He paused, his instinct was to tell Riley he could use his first name, since they were in private… but this was an official meeting.. promotions and all. He nodded to the empty chair across from him. “What do you have Riley?” he questioned with as affable voice as he could muster.

Riley took a seat and pushed the padd across the CO’s desk.

He glanced towards the material Dekker had in his hand. “Did the XO go over these?” When he was first officer, he reviewed the enlisted officers evaluation and Julien pretty much rubber stamped them. “Or are some of them looking for an 1332?” Which was the Star-Fleet policy in treating mental illnesses. It actually wasn’t the discharge rules but it was the only thing that popped into Marius’ head.

“The department heads forwarded their recommendations onto Commander Petursson. It’s all routine,” Riley crossed one leg over the other and settled back into the chair, a smile curling up the corner of his mouth. “I was just looking for an excuse to see how you’re settling in. I’m guessing Julien’s departure took you by surprise as much as it did the rest of us. How are you adjusting?”

Dekker, CNS

Marius looked at the PaDD for a moment longer before putting down on the desk. “Oh, this is my 1332.” He shook his head. “You didn’t have to come up with an excuse Riley. I guess I’m going to have to get used to this less than subtle investigation of my mental health.” He paused.

That made Riley smile. He wasn’t here to investigate Calvin’s mental health, just to have a conversation, but the Captain’s comment was very much in character with the man he knew. The big chair hadn’t changed that.

“It was a little out of the blue. Marriage and children can do that to you.” He shrugged. “I would have the same priorities. Were Sage to leave with my child… rest assured you could measure my duration on the ship with a stop watch. Family first… contrary to the marine motto, God, Country, Corps.” Family was not even listed.

Marius’s mention of a child with Sage caused Riley’s eyes to find his lap for a brief moment before fixing on the Captain again, “I’m sure there are a number of captains in Starfleet who’d make a different choice than Julien did or you would. I wonder sometimes about the moments in life where we don’t have a choice. You didn’t get to choose the timing of your elevation to the center seat. Do you feel like you had a choice in accepting it?”

Dekker, CNS

Marius pursed his lips, honesty was perhaps the best policy, not to mention Marius was not the best liar in the work. “No.” He said flatly.
“Not that I couldn’t have turned it down.” He glanced away in an uncharacteristic gesture of discomfort. “I’m sure I could have, but what Johnny Paper Pusher would they have put in here.” He looked back at Riley. “And even if the officer was good, and they probably would have been, They aren’t Genny Officers. How many of us are left who remember Patricia and us who is going to remember Julian. It’s you, me, and Sage.”

“I’m not going to let the Genny down like that.”

Marius CO

“The legacy of a strong leader is what happens after they’re gone. It’s a testament to Captain Lewis that she’d fostered a crew that only grew in strength and cohesion after her departure and yet Julien struggled with her perceived shadow throughout his tenure in this Ready Room.”

Riley knew he was divulging a confidence in saying that, but he was just as certain that their former CO wouldn’t mind. He leaned forward in his chair.

“You’re of a different mettle than Julien. His insecurities aren’t your own, but his charge is now yours. I have full confidence that he’s left the ship able to carry on its unique legacy. The crew that joined under his tenure is strong and you’re right, you were the only choice capable of carrying the Genny forward on her path. Sure, another Captain would have likely run a smooth ship and completed assigned missions, but an outsider would have to learn what makes the Genny what she is, and not all Captains are that curious. Command knew that when they gave four solid pips to a Lieutenant Commander. Still, you’ll have struggles. It’s dangerous to hold those in. You have Sage, but I hope you’ll see me as someone you can unburden yourself to when needed.”

Dekker, CNS

“I always have Riley, I just haven’t been able to.” The contradiction was obvious. “Trusting some enough to tell them everything and to actually doing it are two entirely different things. I’ve spent my entire life denying my feelings. I imagine you can understand I’m not quite in touch enough with them to have discussions about them.”

“I kind of talk to Sage, but only on the fact that I love her.. which I’m surprisingly comfortable with.” He chuckled a little bit. “You would think that wouldn’t be the case.”
