Once again Tigeress could be found sleeping at her desk. Midnight was Roaming the lab and her notes were all over the lab. She was on to sumthing again and got so lost in her work that she had forgotten to eat or sleep for two days again. This was not an unusual event for her. Most of the other scientists were use to these episodes the simply let it play out. It did not really mater if they tried to help her no one could read her notes. They were disorganized and seamed to change subject evey other line. They made perfect sense nce to ensign Tigeress thought.

Marius walked into the Zoology lab, his strides were long and confident but he pulled up short as he saw the huge cat that Tigress kept as a pet. Surprises were bad for animals, including humanoids who had judgement, a tiger had far less judgement than the average humanoid so he didn’t want to make a move that could be seen as aggressive. ‘Ensign?’ he commented to draw Tigeress’ attention.

Midnight saw the captain walk up. The cat walked towards the captain. His body Language was relaxed. Unlike the others animals in the room midnight was very social and liked people. It took a moment for Tigeress to come to. Seeing the captain she jumped up from her desk. “ Captain what time is it” she asked confused. Midnight returned to her side. She looked around the lab. “ I apologize for the mess I’m on to something with the behavior of these reptiles from Gavin 4.” She said almost embarrassed to see the captain here when the zooalogy lab was such a mess.
Ensign Tigeress

Marius crouched and reached out slowly keeping his hand lower than the tiger’s head. “Friendly Cat.” Marius commented more for himself than Tigress who probably already knew that. As the cat walked away he stood and followed it closer to Tigress.

“ he has lived with humans most of his life he is not a pet and can still hurt you but for the most part he is friendly you should see him and Ben interact” Tigeress said simply she watched as the captain approached when he got to within arms length the twitching of her tail would tell him he was to close for Comfort.

“It’s 2 am ship standard time,” which was the time they set when they left the nearest star-base. “I guess the real question is did you fall asleep because you worked past your shift, or are you on the night shift and feel asleep on duty.” Even though he posed it like a question his tone didn’t make it sound like a question… which meant he knew the answer or at least was pretending to know the answer.

“ you know me I have a bad habit of working past my shift Ben can confirm that and so can the computer” Tigeress said. She a a convincing enough of a smile on her face. Something about her body language said she was redy for a confrontation. Witch everyone in the science department know she would not back down from. That was not to say she enjoyed fights she did not like fighting but she would if she had to.

He glanced down at the scattered paperwork. Science wasn’t the Captain’s strong point he was a security officer through and through. He could make gun powder… a ballista.. stuff like that, but other science stuff… nope. “Reptiles.. I had an unpleasant encounter with an eel on Bellarus…” He made a stabbing motion with one hand. “Worse for the eel than me in the end.”

Marius

Tigeress glared at him. That was not the best stamens. “ Eel’s are not reptiles and in most cases are harmless I’m going to guess you accidentally invaded it Territory.” Tigeress said. After she made her stamens she dropped the glare and her face became a more neutral expression. “ I there something I can help you with captain” she said calmly though it was clear that she was not very comfortable with the interaction. Then again Tigeress did not trust anyone.
Ensign Tigeress

“Really, I guess I connect cold animals to reptiles… or maybe because its very snake-like.” He questioned aloud. “What is it? A fish?”

“ yes fish I believe I could be wrong on the classification though they are definitely not reptiles ” Tigeress said with a smile

“Well, I intentionally went there, I guess the accident was not knowing the eel had already staked its claim for the patch of swamp I was in..” He shrugged. “I was just moving through, if it had left me alone I would have left him or her alone.” He watched Tigress she didn’t seem to display much in the way of social warmth. He remembered their last brief conversation where she said flat out that she didn’t trust him. Perhaps that was a trait of her species…

“ that dose tend to happen. Then again you could have done something to attract the animal to you” Tigeress said.

“Just checking in, night shift can be boring, but it can also give you a picture of what people are really doing with their time.”

“Oh and what have you learned other then I am disorganized and tend to work way past my shift” Tigeress asked.
Ensign Tigeress

Marius smirked. It was an expression she hadn’t seen from him. “Ensign, what makes you think there is something else I wanted to learn?”

Marius

Was he smiling. Did he find her amassing. She glared at him. “ you think this is a game I don’t play games Captain.” She said pausing. She considered her words for a moment. “ it’s unusual to see you in the Zooalogy lab. So I’m going at ask again why are you here” she said calmly
Ensign Tigeress

“You have no idea what I think, so don’t presume to know.” Marius stopped smiling… his expression was now far less friendly. “I’m the captain of this ship, I can be anywhere at anytime I want.” He didn’t glare back, he didn’t have to. “How you perform your duties are up to me to evaluate any way I see fit. Including coming to the Zoology lab and seeing you asleep.”

“I think you forget who answers to who on this ship.”

Marius

“ you are right, I may be a bit irritable my apologies captain” Tigeress said reliving she had been the couse of this confrontation. “ you still did not answer my question it is unusual for you to come to Zooalogy so I’m Shure you came for a reason. As for my sleeping my notes and the computer can confirm I have been her well past my shift.” She added more calmly. The line of question had to do with her unwillingness to trust him. Her trust had to be earned the rank of the other individual did not mater when it came to trust.
Ensign Tigeress

“I did, I like to check on my staff, encourage those who are working hard. Keep an eye on those who are not… and find out what is so important to officers that would make them work late so I can keep the happy and excited about their jobs.” He nodded to himself for a moment.

“That being said, you seem not to be interested in that… so I won’t bother you any longer. Carry on.” Marius turned and left without further comment.

Marius CO

“ waght captain what do you mean, I find humanoids hard to read and confused how can you find out what motivates them what makes them tick as it were” Tigeress said fallowing him. A ceros exspretion on her face. Her gold eyes almost lighting up with excitement. The captain had managed something few others did catch her attention.
Ensign Tigeress

Marius paused and turned… confused on a level on the Ensigns change in demeanor. “One day you understand that there is more to being a Captain than getting saluted and giving orders. Good people don’t work for money, generally they do what they do because they love it.” He looked over at the desk she was just sleeping at.

“But that doesn’t mean that they don’t want to be acknowledged and appreciated for there good work. On my review of the duty logs it appeared that you were working hard and doing a good job. I wanted you to know I saw and I appreciated the effort.’ He opened his hands… “I do not believe my message was received in the manner it was intended.”

Marius

“No it was not usually the only people joe notice won’t to Lecter me for neglecting my health. I don’t think they understand. I’m not dumb enough to believe that you understand ether. Honestly I’m not shure I’ll ever make captain I don’t have the people or leadership skills needed for that. How well do you know Ben” she said.
Ensign Tigeress

“I’m not here to lecture you. When I was younger. I was full of vinegar like you seem to be.” He smiled in the distance. “I used to say you defined yourself as much by who your friends were as much as who your enemies were.” He tilted his head.

“So I ran about finding people who had characteristics that I didn’t like or respect. Or people who had not t gone far enough to be trusted and labeling them enemy… or not worthy of respect.” He looked at Tigress. “Its a way to live… but I found it very unhappy and lonely. More important I think, is to judge people less and be more of the person I want others to be… If you ask my wife I’m not quite there yet.. but I try. “

Marius

“ trust is hard and you were never mistaken for an animal and hunted you also were not told that you were nothing more then an animal by other cadets in the academy. Not only that humanoid are so complicated it’s hard to read and follow them. I also won’t simply trust someone because they have authority something your predecessor never understand. That and something strange happened to him he went from calm to confrontational and almost negative all of the sudden it was like he was a different person all together” she said.
Ensign Tigeress

“That is unfortunate Ensign, I wish people weren’t as narrow minded as it sounds like they were to you.” In reality they were all animals, and one animal disparaging another for being… an animal was a lot of the ‘pot calling the kettle black’.

“ that’s particularly why I only like a few people on the ship I don’t hate everyone else I just don’t trust them. I’m not sure about you yet.” She said.

“I’m not here to speak ill of the previous Captain. People are people though, not everyone has a steady and calm mood all the time. We have weaknesses and points that bother us more than others. I’m sure someone could say something unflattering about you that might be true.” Marius smiled slightly.

Marius.

“ I’m sure they can and have, I did not hate the man if that’s what you are getting at. I just couldn’t trust him. Perhaps I’ll be able to trust you but as Ben could tell you I have a hard time with trust” she said.
Ensign Tigeress

“I can’t make you change the way you feel, ensign, but consider who does your defensiveness harms? You make everyone earn your trust, which means everyone is on the outside, until you let them on the inside which limits your social circle to people who want to battle to be your friend and then qualify after that… ” He made a shrinking circle with his hands.

“You are making yourself lonely.” He shrugged. “I did something similar when I was your age… perhaps even younger. Time taught me that that wasn’t the best choice…”

Marius

“ who said I was lonely anyway what is a better choice sence you seam to think there is a better option. Did Ben ask you to talk to me? ” she said now intensely curious this was the second person to try and Chang her. First Ben now the captain The consular had never made these stamens why? And why was it now a big deal. Humans were so confusing.
Ensign Tigeress

He shrugged, “Perhaps I should have said, it sounds like you are making yourself lonely.” He nodded, “It is true I don’t know factually that you are lonely or not. I think I would were I you.”

“Nope, the young lieutenant hasn’t asked me to speak to you. I guess he had said similar things.”

Marius

“ he has he said something about my talents and knowledge being able to benefit the other people. Though I thought that was the point of publishing my work” she said. There was clear confusion in her time and gestures.
Ensign Tigeress

“Publishing is always valuable. The problem is, you never know who’s actually going to read your stuff.” Marius hadn’t actually published anything. There was one line in the marine handbook that he corrected years ago, but that was it.

“But writing and talking to people and having friends are two different things.” He looked at her, “I might be making generalizations. Can you explain the social networking of your race?”

Marius

“ I would not know, my parents were human, I never seen my home world and don’t care to I don’t belong there” she said.
Ensign Tigeress

“Hmm,”Marius looked at her, “I’m adopted as well. At least I was adopted by my own species so the social behaviorism is normalized. I would surmise knowing what and who you were supposed to be is much more difficult.” He looked off towards a console.

“Have you never done research on your species?” It would have been one of the first things he would have done.

Marius.

“ years ago it was just as confusing and complex as humans” she said. She struggled understand humanoids.

“Have you ever thought about taking a sabbatical and going to your homeworld to visit the ‘relations’.” Marius offered. “It’s tough to not know generations of learned species knowledge.”

Marius

“ Captain that’s not my home world earth is. They did not want be but for some reason humans do?” She said. It was quite obvious that’s she was confused about her second stament. However there was no doubting where Tigeress called home. “ my absolute favorite place on earth is the Amazon rain forest.” She added. She was completely calm for now witch was a bit unusual very few on the ship had ever Sean Tigress let her guard down.

“Humans do very poorly living up to their aspirations… but the good part is they aspire to so much. I’m glad you feel that Earth is your home.” Marius nodded. “I just thought it was hard for you.” He stared off. “The Amazon was in danger of being destroyed in the 2040’s you know.”
