It had been two nights since Reia had woke up in Dagen’s quarters and, though they had seen each other briefly during that time, they hadn’t been able to spend another night together. Normally such a thing wouldn’t bother Reia but she had been doing a lot of reading and contemplating of late. He was heavy on her mind as she walked around her small quarters redecorating yet again.

She had changed out the small coffee table for a small dark glass oval one with a tall pillar candle softly glowing. The scent was reminiscent of the Australian coast on a crisp spring morning with a touch of vanilla.

In the corner there was a two tiered end table with pictures arranged on each level. One on the bottom was Reia and her grand parents the day she had graduated Star Fleet Academy. Reia’s skin tone was obviously different from theirs but they shared some features.
Next to that was a picture of a group of people with Reia and a red headed woman taking up the center. On the top tier was the only picture Reia had of her mother.

Stepping away from this new arrangement Reia paused and gave a sad little smile before walking over to the couch and beginning to read again.

Now where exactly were they going skiing? she thought.

  • Reia

There was a buzz at her door …
- Dagen

Reia set the book aside and poured another cup of tea as the doorbell rang.

“Yes, come in.” she said with a slight yawn which was strange considering it wasn’t that late.

  • Reia

Dagen was there, still in uniform. He was sporting a slight but noticeable 5 o’clock shadow and a widening smile. “I hope I’m not interrupting,” he said. “I was missing you and …” he brought out his right hand that had been barely concealed behind him to reveal her ankle bracelet. “… i came across this, and thought I’d return it.” He smiled. “It is a brazen excuse to see you, I admit.”

Looking past her he noticed that things had been rearranged. She was good. The most rearranging that Dagen tended to do was to clean up. He breathed in the scent that was fresh and fair but that he couldn’t entirely place. His eyes returned to her. “I found that a wave and a hi in the corridors was not enough.”
- Dagen

Reia spent most evenings out of uniform and this evening was not exception. Her gran would have told her that she looked like she was ready for a day at the beach with nice fitting denim shorts and a soft white tank top that tied underneath her breasts revealing a fair bit of her toned body. She smiled and stepped aside to let him in.

“You’re not interrupting at all and, even if you were, you’re welcome to do it any time. I’m so glad you found that.” she said sitting back down and motioning Dagen to join her.

  • Reia

Dagen pushed off from the door frame and stepped in, hearing the faint swoosh of the door sliding shut behind him. An image of an ancient holo called ‘Star Wars’ came to mind and just how they had devised the ‘future past’ of bulkhead doors closing at warp speed, enough to cut anyone in half that paused for but a nano second in passing through. Taking the couple of extra steps forward he leaned in to greet her with a soft, if lingering for a few heartbeats longer than necessary, kiss. He liked her lounge wear. He supposed he should have changed. Typically he did, however after getting back late to his quarters from his monthly team lead meeting for the beta shift he was restless and not wanting to just sit but certainly not wanting to do the holo-gym.

Pulling back he held out the bracelet near the end of his index finger for her to take. “You could class this as a miracle of epic proportion that this was found, given the general state of my quarters.” Grinning he gave another quick look around, focusing just a bit longer on the photos in the corner. “You’ve changed the place. It’s nice.” He winked. “You could be an engineer. Apparently we like to change things too.” He paused for a moment. “Was wondering if you would like to replicate a snack and relax with a holo.” The ski venture was yet to come in a couple days, but he didn’t want to wait that long to see Reia.
- Dagen

Reia took the gleaming silver bracelet. It was several strands woven together to form a lacy pattern with a red teardrop charm on one end.

Looking up at Dagen she smiled and laughed.

“Actually I do call it a miracle of epic proportions that you found it but, perhaps, you were motivated.” she said catching his eyes and winking.

Her wink prompted a smile in response, his eyes twinkling with .. humor? something else?

“A snack and a holo sounds better than what I had planned for the evening. You can only read so much.

“Amen to that,” he agreed. For him engineering manuals were a given; it didn’t mean that anyone had found a way to actually make them interesting. The only upside was that as an engineer he had a vested interest in the subject and could bore his way through them without becoming too .. bored. Most of the time.

Sitting on the couch she brought her right ankle up to rest on her left knee and proceeded to put the anklet back on.

He watched her move and reach to put on the bracelet again. “Looks perfect there,” he said, admiring it, or was it the shape of her calf and ankle.

“Now just what do you have in mind?” she asked teasingly.

What had been going through his mind was certainly nothing that had to do with what he had said initially. Caught in the ‘act’ so to speak his light complexioned features flushed into a blush. “Let me think about that,” he said, sitting and reaching for the ankle that was now graced with the delicate bracelet. “Looks much better here where it belongs than on my floor though,” he commented, a thumb almost absently pressing in a massage. “

There was something about Dagen that put Reia at ease and made her experiment with expressing herself in ways that she usually didn’t.

  • Reia

He smiled. “My stomach went between something decadent like a chip and salsa with beer to a lighter fruit and wine. As for the holo I’m a sucker for dramatic musicals. Klingon opera gives me headaches. And only on occasion do I hide behind the couch with a psychological thriller or too much drama.” He smiled. That was on his mind on the way in. Other things were starting to inch their way in. “How about you? What do you like?”
Dagen

Reia had been trying to stay still with Dagen’s fingers on her ankle but, truth be told, she was incredibly ticklish there. Unable to stand it any longer, she pulled her foot away from him and laughed, launching herself half onto his lap and kissing him roughly before pulling away.

It was utter spontaneity that he had done what he did, and it looked to be the same in her reaction, though he did find his blood rise up at her response - in a good way. His eyes followed her as she was away almost as suddenly as she was there. She makes a good dessert, his mind tracked, before shifting back. Responsively he leaned forward as she pulled back. There was something about her that contact with her was like a drug that made him react and want more. He’d thought of that in the last days and knew that while her pheromones played a part there was something that was simply ‘her’ that did the rest.

“Klingon opera gives me a headache too. You pick the movie, I’ll pick dessert.”

  • Reia

“Deal,” he replied, bringing his mind to the present to consider a holo. As she passed by him to go to the replicator he reached out to wrap his arm around her thighs and pressed a kiss at her hip. “Holo coming up,” he said, pulling back just as quickly and stood up to move to the nearest console to do a quick search on holo choices.
- Dagen

Reia smiled as she went to the replicator scrolling through to find something interesting.

She enjoyed Dagen’s company immensely and appreciated the fact that he tried so hard to have more than one element in their relationship.

Finally settling on a dish, she brought forth a large short cake laden with sweet strawberries and tart mangoes. Mounds of whipped cream towered over the top and flowed onto the platter.

Setting it down on the glass table, she rearranged a few things before bringing back a bottle of wine and two glasses. She also brought a pot of hot tea and cups unsure of exactly what they might want.

Sitting down, she made herself comfortable and watched Dagen as he chose the nights entertainment. Reia was suffering no illusions that they would actually make it through the movie.

  • Reia

Dagen made a search through the likely suspects - holos he had seen before so had some idea of. That dried up quickly and he was skimming the list wanting something new. One title twigged his interest relating to an Earth vessel named Titanic. He had heard of that - in the Academy engineering class they had a project to work out specific energies that came into play between the ship and the iceberg and the metal strength of the hull and so on. He stopped there and brought up the topic. And groaned inwardly. Between the time that that ship existed and today there were no fewer than 27 different versions of this. That was insane. At least on Trill when someone did something like this they kept to one version.

Glancing over he saw that Reia had already replicated something looking terribly decadent and was going back for more. He paused to watch her ‘wiggle’ as she moved. In his mind he could feel the traces of the intoxicating pheromones touching on his senses. Physically he was starting to recognize the ‘signs’ .. one of which, oddly enough, being that his earlobes tingled and felt warm. Pushing that away he turned back to the selection. On a total whim he flicked his hand along the screen to send the list of 27 spinning like a slot machine. Curiously he watched to see where it would land, and, as it did so, he just tapped on it to bring it up. It would be as much a surprise to him as anyone, he supposed.

“It’s pot luck with this one,” he said, glancing and noting it was one of the older versions, but changed to fit the holo viewer which, in itself was a little off as for things like this it was more of a three dimensional screen than something holo deckish. Idly he wondered what a holodeck version of that would be like, apart from the obvious most people perishing thing. “Wine for me, I think,” he said, playfully scooping up a fingertip of whipped cream and putting it across his lips and firmly kissing her.

Reia responded to Dagen’s kiss. Did he taste good or was it the whipped cream?

“I’ll serve,” he said, pulling back enough to speak .. with effort he turned his attention to the spread. “What are the yellow bits?” he asked. Terran fruit was not entirely on his radar apart from some of the common ones.

“Those are mangoes. Popular in some of the warmer climates on Earth. They’re sweet to sweet-tart. I find them delicious.” she said.

As she explained, DAgen made himself more comfortable by slipping off his uniform jacket and draping it off the end of the couch. Glancing at the fruit that contrasted so well with the red of the strawberries. Sitting he slipped off his boots. There. That was better. Wiggling his now freed toes he bent to the task; he had not had supper. Was his mouth watering because of the cake and wine or Reia?

The berries he recognized. “Wine? Tea?” he asked, pouring a glass of wine for himself while waiting for her reply, serving which she chose. So too was the cake where he sliced off two, passing Reia one.
- Dagen

“I think I’ll go for wine. It’s light and crisp and a bit sweet at the end. Need something to balance out all that whipped cream.”

  • Reia

His expression was one of wonder. “You are amazing to think of that. I would pull this and that off because it tasted good. That is an art, Reia,” he said. Digging in with a bite then a sip, Dagen saw a trace of whipped cream on her upper lip. “Missed something,” he said, leaning in to kiss off that white spot and take advantage of the moment and lingered there.” Retreating back to be sitting beside her Dagen forced his focus to the holo. “Is that learned or natural?” He asked, referring to putting together a food setting, though could have easily referred to her kiss.
Dagen

Reia laughed and smiled a bit as she enjoyed the decadent treat.

“Well my gramps does like to muck about with planing this and that and I think we have a distant relative that owns a restaurant. Mostly I just choose what I like.” she said, her gaze going from the holo, to her companion, and back again.

  • Reia

For the moment, or three, Dagen turned his attention to the cake, finishing the first piece in little time and then slicing off a second. The variety in tastes and texture was nice and he was hungry. Between that and downing a glass of wine he was quite settled soon after. “Music is nice,” he commented on the introduction of the holo and the background sound track. He had a feeling there was going to be a lengthy introduction to the different characters here. Refilling the wine glass he settled back, one foot hooked on the edge of the end table and the other stretched out. With the glass in his left hand his right slid around Reia’s shoulders.

He chuckled as he took a sip of the wine. “Well, you choose much better combinations that you like than I.” Perhaps they weren’t so much ‘better’ but ‘different’ but still, and here he brought in his mother’s quotes .. ‘a woman’s touch is always lighter’ .. in referring to anything from food to well, he would stop thinking beyond that at the moment. Squirming at that he decided that it would be strategic to squirm in Reia’s direction. “I like the scent from the candle,” he commented. “I remember when I went through an incense phase when I was a teen. Stunk up the house real bad on more than one occasion. Mother was furious.”
- Dagen

Reia relaxed enjoying the moment and laughing at his comment about parents. Idly her gaze strayed to the pictures, on the table, in the corner, before returning to Dagen.

“From what I understand, parents are usually frustrated with their children during their teen years as it were. Pick a subject, any subject, and I bet you’ll find a frustrated parent.”

Dagen looked amused. He could tell stories on either side of that coin. “Oh tell me about an instance of Rebel-Reia,” he inquired, sipping and looking forward to such a tale. He stretched out and relaxed. Dagen himself was a pretty ‘good’ kid. He was so busy as a youth that rebellion was not that close to his personae. He, instead, worked it out later in life.

Reia sipped the last of he wine.

“The candle is a combination of plants and the lovely ocean spray near where I grew up. It just seemed nice fort he moment.” she explained.

  • Reia

“It is,” he agreed, breathing it in deeply. His nose tingled from it. ‘Must be the plant matter’ he thought. “I’ve always liked candles. When I was younger I thought I’d have the opportunity to relax and light them. Same thing with camp fires or a fireplace. But I never have since being back on Trill. I’ve never been in the same spot long enough to warrant it, it seemed.” His tone was more wistful, eyes focused on the flickering flame and wine glass resting at his chest.
- Dagen

For some reason Reia could imagine Dagen on a long cold night, at a camp fire of some sort, millions of stars and his particular kind of warmth. She reveled in her thoughts for a few seconds before snapping back to the present.

“I don’t think I was a rebel actually. My mere existence gave my grandparents quite enough to worry about. I came to live with them when I was 3. My mother is… Probably something better discussed at a later time.”

Reia paused again and poured the last of the bottle of wine for each of them.

“I think the most rebellious thing I can think of at this moment is joining Star Fleet.” she commented.
