Usually the ship was a happy place, people where nice and friendly hand helpful. Thee where lots of friends and even more things to do. But now Sheeah couldn’t care. She had been having such a nice day ad now it was all going bad. She ran along the corridors er little shoes pounding into the carpet. As she ran she tripped over her laces, they where undone. Now he was sad and hurting. That made even more tar fall from her eyes down her face She kept running she wanted to go home she wanted her mummy.

She ran and ran not looking where she was going as she rounded a corner she bumped into someone. She looked up through tearier eyes “S..s..sorry.” she choked out.

Sheeah (Lieut Chan’s daughter)

Magnus tensed as he saw the weepy-eyed child on the ground. He should have been able to notice her a good while before she would have bumped into him and even if not he should have been able to stop her from hitting him. He immediately went on one knee to face the child “No apologies necessary, it’s Sheeah isn’t it” He said with a smile, his slight Scandinavian accent soft as he spoke “Do you remember me, I’m Magnus” He said calmly as he assessed the child for any injuries. He knew from experience that people running into him were more often than not harmed by the occurance “Is something the matter?” He asked.

XO

Surprisingly Sheeah was unharmed. She looked at Magnus “Everyone nasty and mean. They said nasty thing about my Mummy and my Daddy. Even though my Daddy’s with he angles. I thought i was peoples friend but I was wrong they hate me” she said hugging Magus and crying a little more. “I want my mummy” she added.

Sheeah (Chan’s daughter)

Magnus held the girl tightly, an act that surprised him a little bit. After a moment he nudged them slightly apart “Well then why don’t we go find your mamma then?” He asked smiling at the girl. He stood up and put a hand out for her to hold “How about we find out where She is” He said in as kind a voice as he could muster. =^=Computer, where is Lieutenant Chan?=^= He said a bit louder.

=^= Lieutenant Chan is in her quarters=^=. Then a couple moment later the computer beeped again =^= Note a security alert is out for lieutenant Chan’s daughter Sheeah. She has gone missing.=^= The computer replied.

After the computer told them where to go Magnus turned to lead the child “So who is saying such nasty things about your parents? Other kids?” He asked curiously. He hadn’t yet made time to get to know the details regarding Chan and her daughter, all he was aware of was that the father wasn’t in the picture. He made a mental note to look into the matter when he had the time.

XO

Sheeah shook her head “The kids say say bad things but not that bad. It was a science person. She’s like me and my Mummy and i thought we could be friends. She hated me and was nasty.” she said wiping her eyes with her hand “I just wanted to make a friend and get help with my class work. Why does he hate me?” Sheeah asked.

Sheeah (Chan’s Daughter)

“It was an Adult” Magnus hid a grimace, children he could understand being mean to each other, at least on some level but an adult making a child cry. Such things were inexcusable “Well I don’t know, sometimes people are just mad at the world” He said as he led the child to the nearest turbolift “And if he dislikes you then that’s his problem, it ain’t no fault of your own understand” He smiled down and gently squeezed her hand. Comforting children was not exactly part of his repertoire, the quicker he’d get her home the better.

As the lift opened and the pair entered Magus paused =^=Lieutenant Chan’s Quarters=^= He ordered the elevator then tapped his combadge =^=Karlson to Security, I’ve located Lieutenants Chan’s daughter, I am returning her to her mother, we will arrive in a few moments=^= He explained calmly. He looked down “We’ll be at your home soon”

XO

=^= acknowledged.thank you for finding her Sir.=^= Came the reply. The security officer sounded way more relieved then you would expect. However most of the crew knew what Chan was like when she was on the war path. Most knew to get out the way or run.

Sheeah looked at the XO an nodded. she couldn’t wait to get home. As the lift door opened Sheeah took the lead and led Magnus to her home. She pressed the door button and walked in dragging Magnus with her.

Chan’s quarters where the standard family quarters. Spacious with two sleeping rooms off from the main room. Chan quarters where decorated simply with several painting on the walls. they where all of an outstanding quality and covered a wide range if subjects. from a grassy meadow to an Andorian ice palace. On the shelf opposite the door next to the window. sat a box with a clear lid. inside the box was a selection of medals and most of them where some of the highest medals that could possibly be given to any officer in service. next to this was a picture of Chan holding a small child and standing next to a man with dark hair, green eyes and a pale complexion. Chan wore the standard yellow uniform of engineering and the man wore the blue uniform for medical.

Below this was another shelf with small Andorian artefacts and another couple of pictures. An old photo of two andorians and then a newer one with a large Andorian family. In the right hand corner was a small desk with a char behind it and opposite that on the left s an artists isle with a partially covered picture. only the saucer section of a starship could be seen under the sheet.

In the centre of the room was a sofa opposite an chair and in the middle was a coffee table. On the table where a couple pads. one of which was an andorian padd. next to this was a computer. and in front of the computer was some paper and some pencils.

When the door opened and sheeah walked in Chan ran over to her and hugged her before picking her up. She looked ad her and she and Sheeah began talking in Andorian. It was clear in her quarters and with her daughter Chan preferred to talk in her native language. As Andorian was such a complicated language the universal translator had trouble making sense of everything they where saying. However Magnus could figure out form the little bits that Chan was asking what was happening and why sheeah ran away.

After a few moments Chan turned to the XO “Sorry. We should have talked in standard.” She said apologetically “Thank you for finding her. I was so worried” Chan said warmly well warmly for Chan anyway.

Lieut Chan (Sub-DH Robotics)

Whilst Chan talked with her daughter Magnus examined the room with interest. Stopping for a moment at the photo of what he assumed was Seeah’s late father before Chan spoke to him. He turned towards her and smiled, raising his hands in a dismissing manner “No bother at all, we quite literally clashed in the hall. She was very upset about some very mean scientist” He explained calmly not seeming to be bothered by the situation “Does she not like walking around with a communicator?” he asked.

XO

Chan sighed “She normally does have her communicator. However i found it in the science lab with her homework padd. When I came to pick her up. That’s when I called security. Sheeah always takes it with her she’s a good girl like that” she said smiling at Sheeah.

“The teachers asked us to take them off when we do our homework. Some kids had been naughty and used the computer to answer their homework. So if we take them off we can’t ask the computer for the answers.” Sheeah said she was calming down now.

Lieut Chan (Sub-DH Robotics)

“Well quite so” Magnus smiled “Well why don’t you tell your mother why it was you ran away” His voice calm, taking care not to sound condescending.

XO

Sheeah nodded “I was in the science lab doing my school work. I saw someone like me an you mummy. I said hi and he was really mean. Called you a bad name and called me a freak. I’m not a freak. I’m a girl. It was really mean and I was upset. i asked why he was mean tome. then he told me to go away. That was when i ran away” she said her eyes tearing slightly. “I shouldn’t have ran away but i was so upset.” Sheeah added.

Chan hugged her daughter “It’s OK. I’m not cross with you. I’m cross with this officer.” she said putting sheeah down and walking over to her computer . “Computer access personnel file. Narrow down to all Andorians in the science department.” she ordered.

A few seconds the computer beeped. one name had come up. Chan read the screen “NE freeze” she said to herself. she then picked up the Andorian padd on the table up. once it was lifted the back of the add could be seen and the Andorian royal crest was clearly visible. Chan tapped the padd then spoke in Andorian. The padd beeped “Access censor information on Freeze, clan thaw.” Chan said after a few minutes Chan looked at the XO “That explains that” she said getting up and handing the padd to the XO “He’s a traditionalist. What the hell is a traditionalist doing on a star fleet ship?” Chan asked, clearly Chan had forgot that the XO probably didn’t even know what an Andorian traditionalist was. At least she remembered to translate the information into standard.

Lieut Chan (Sub DH robotics)

<BUMP> for XO

Magnus accepted the PaDD and read the information for a moment. He knew about as much about Andorian politics as most Humans, just the basics. He knew somepoeple who were closer with Andorians than himself, he made a mental note to call some of them later on. “I’m assumging that a Traditionalist is some sort of political faction on Andoria, something like the old anti-Federation groups of Earth and Vulcan?” He asked as he examined the device itself and rubbed his thumb over the symbol “If I’m not mistaken this is the Andorian royal symbol is it not?” He asked Chan before she could answer his first question “I may not know much about the Andorian political system but no Andorian I’ve ever served with has had something like this in their possession.”

XO

Chan half smiled “My uncle is the ruler of andoria. It would have been my father, but he was killed in action serving the federation. Then my brother and i were cast aside by my grandfather to save his political image. It’s only in recent years i have discovered and been able to access what my blood line allows me to.” she said a tone of frustration in her voice. “If it wasn’t for my uncle i probably would have never of known who or what i am. He worked tirelessly when he came to power to restore my fathers image, standing and reputation. he moved mountains to find me to” she added now her frustration was replaced with fondness.

“Even so i prefer to earn my way in the universe. not have it handed to me on a silver platter” Chan said after a short pause. she was about to mention the traditionalist when she decided not to. so the XO would have time to process the information Chan had just given him. it wasn’t every day you fund out royalty was serving on your ship and not making a fanfare of it. Chan remembered how Julian reacted when she told him, the CO was so shocked and surprised. However he had accepted it and not treated her nay different which is exactly what Chan wanted. she didn’t want to be put on a pedestal or babied because of her family, she would hate that. She hoped the XO would do the same and respect her wishes.

Lieut Chan (Sub-DH Robotics)

Magnus crossed his right arm across his chest and placed his left hand under his chin and took a moment to digest what he’d been told. It wasn’t just the fact that he was surprised by this it was also the fact that this never came up in his research of the crew of the Genny was disconcerting, he made a mental note to dig deeper, the crew was becoming more interesting the more time hs spent there. Then he smiled, lowered his hands and turned to Chan “Well I can say I wasn’t expecting that when I woke up this morning” He said quite calmly “I’ll deal later, I’m assuming that the traditionalists are a faction of royalists that prefer your family to stay within the Andorian hierarchy and not leave to galavant around the stars in a Starfleet Uniform?”

Magnús - XO

Chan nodded “Among other things.” she said “there are two main types of andorian, there are other variation but it boils down to two groups. You’ve got the traditionalists. They believe that we should keep all our tradition even the archaic ones. We should always introduce ourselves as one of the four genders of Andorians, we should have four people per marriage and only Andorians, we should only serve in the Andorian military or navy. Children should only speak Andorian, the list goes on and on. Some extremist Traditionalists also believe that Andoria should leave the federation and sever all contact. Some even thing Andorians should rule the galaxy and only Andorians.” She said “It can be a very dangerous way of thinking.” she added.

“Then on the other side you’ve got the group myself and my family fall in. We’re progressives. we believe that we should keep some of our traditions, but people should be free to make their own choices on what they want to do. If they want to just call themselves female or male that’s fine, the biological differences are so minute that it shouldn’t matter. As long as we know which one we are. others shouldn’t be expected to learn them. If we want to marry just one person and have a child with them” she said pointing to herself hen Sheeah “Then that’s fine. If we want to serve in star fleet great. We also feel that while the federation has its many flaws. we should work together with the other federation races to improve it, not just cut and run.” Chan said trying her best to explain the situation as best she could.

Chan sighed “So as you can imagine we butt heads rather a lot” she added finally.

Lieut Chan (Sub-DH robotics)

Magnus chuckled, most species in the Federation were similar, traditionalists and progressives. Pro-Federation and Pro-Independence. In his experience, the traditionalists were mostly a minority at least in Humans but he wasn’t surprised that it was different depending on the Species “I see” He said after a moments pause “But if traditionalists are so Anti-Starfleet why then is it that we have one serving onboard this very starship, someone who is well aware of who you are and who your daughter is” The answer was probably very obvious but years of experience taught Magnus never to jump to conclusions when he could crawl.

Magnus - XO

“That i don’t know” Chan said simply “I mean there could be many reasons, he could be a progressive that has reverted to a traditionalist, and is waiting for his transfer to an Andorian ship, he could be a traditionalist that has converted or is in the process of converting, to a progressive. f that’s the case he would be dealing with a lot of things and internal conflicts. He might have been sent by the traditionalists to see what star fleet is like now and send information back to them.” She said tryignt o figure it out “Those are the good options at least.” she added.

“I have other theories and they are all very bad and i truly hope their not the case” she said after a short pause.

Lieut Chan (Sub-DH Robotics)

Magnus smiled slightly “Are you familiar with Occam’s razor?” He asked without giving her a chance to answer “My first Department head liked throwing it around” He suddenly changed his voice to a lower pitch and a mockingly academic voice “pluralitas non est ponenda sine necessitate” The tone was clearly an imitation of said DH and was, at least to Magnus, a very good one “Normal people would simply say that ‘The simplest solution is almost always the best.’ You pair this school of thought with an unusual coincidence; a Traditionalist serving on the same Starship as the progressive princess and you have a simple hypothesis. You are why he’s here” He spoke the words casually as if what he was implying wasn’t uncomfortable or unusual “So tell me how would you find out if that is the case?” The situation seemed to fascinate the Icelander a great deal but he also did show that he was taking it seriously.

Magnús - XO

Chan sighed “It wouldn’t be the first time. they came after me or someone close to me” she said glancing up at the photo on the shelf. Sadness in her voice. “The only way to find out is to investigate. However it would have to be extremely discreet. If he is here for me and he catches on, that we’re on to him. He might either run or advance his plan more quickly. ” She said “However I dot know who’s best to ask to investigate, intelligence or internal security. I’ve tried both in the past and they either pass me off to the other one o don’t find a whole lot.” she added.

Lieut Chan (Sub-DH Robotics)

“Lieutenant, if someone is using this uniform for personal or political gain I can assure you those three will neither pass you off or miss anything” Magnus said with confidence “Although this sounds like a job suited for either Intelligence or Int-Sec, Ensign Reia seems like a qualified Officer and I’m assured that Lieutenant Jarvis is a qualified officer” He said thinking about the odd notebook he found in his pocket not too long ago with his handwriting in it. “I suggest intelligence because if he is one of your other suggestions there won’t be any blowback and his career won’t be jeopardized, Internal Security investigations are more serious and harder to disguise” Well they would be if any other IntSec officer was assigned to the ship.

XO

Chan nodded “I’ll give Ensign Reia a call tomorrow. Maybe we can get some answers this time.” She said. Chan wasn’t holding out for much, She would just see how it goes.

“I’m sorry. I dragged you into this as soon as you walked into my door. I haven’t even offered you a drink.” she said walking over to the replicator “Do you want anything?” she asked she was trying to change the subject. Andorian politics wasn’t always a good conversation starter.

Lieut Chan (Sub-DH Robotics)

Magnus smiled politely “No bother. Iced water would be well appreciated” He walked further into the quarters, the box of medals caught his eye “That’s an impressive spread” He said examining them closely “I haven’t seen some of these since after war” He returned to his jovial tone. He pointed at one “That one, that one, not that one, ooh two of those” He started counting.

XO

“They where my fathers. As his oldest child i was give them. these are replicas though the originals where lost when the old genesis was destroyed” Chan said handing Magnus his drink “Would you believe he was only a lieutenant commander and a Chief engineer. People always asked him why he wasn’t a commander yet or why he wasn’t a captain. My father always said the same thing, he would be promoted when he had earned it and not before. Even though he was from a royal line he didn’t want everything handed to him on a silver platter. He waned to earn his way. it’s a philosophy i have followed as well.” she said smiling pride in her voice.

Lieut Chan (Sub-DH Robotics)

Magnus smiled and nodded as he accepted his drink, taking a small sip as he listened to the Andorian talk “Well then he picked the right organization, it’s not often that one fails upwards or is promoted due to status in the Fleet” He shrugged “Sure there are cases here and there but overall it’s a good place for someone like him to shine without platters, silver or otherwise” Magnus said as he continued his examination of the medals “Although I do speak from a different experience, both as a Human from Earth and as an Icelander” He looked at Chan and smiled “Familiarity with those in power is common where I’m from and so I guess the reverence of royalty is quite Alien to me, that also goes to family lines, growing up without FAmily names can do that to a kid”

XO

Chan nodded “You where an orphan?” She asked “Sometime I think that’s easier. at least you don’t have a target on your back from birth.” she said looking over to Sheeah who was happily drawing. “My father died when i was young and my mother was very ill. she didn’t last much longer after my Father died. So i had t look after my brother and myself on my own.” she added.

Lieut Chan (Sub-DH Robotics)

Magnus’ face reddened slightly upon realizing his mistake, the reaction was only slight but noticeable “No not an orphan, both parents are alive and well on Earth, my sister included. In my culture we don’t have family names, we take the first name of our father and add a prefix denoting our gender. Some may choose to take their mother’s name or both parents.” He said rubbing the back of his neck “But you have my sypmathies, doesn’t sound like it was an easy childhood” He smiled slightly.

XO

“It wasn’t. But i helped prepare me for adult life. I learnt howto do things i wouldn’t have until now. I had my brother and he had me. That was enough. things have turned around though. I’ve had my share of tragedies though. But i keep looking forward.” Chan said a hopeful tone in her voice “That’s why i’m doing everything i can to make sure Sheeah has a better childhood than i did. I want her to be child and not have to worry about the things i had to” she added.

Lieut Chan (Sub-DH Robotics)

“I suppose that’s the way we should want to raise our children” He raised his hands defensively “Or at least so I’ve heard from those who do have children “He said with a laugh fairly certain that he himself had none of his own “Making the world a better place and giving them better lives”

XO

Chan nodded “Or at least trying to” she said with a half smile

“listen to me. I make it sound like my whole life has been a tragedy.” she said shaking her head “it hasn’t I’ve had good times as well. I was able to go to the Andorian art academy. I was so sure i wouldn’t, with the whole disowned by my grandfather thing. So when i got the letter. i was shocked. I’ve got a great career. I’ve climbed up the ranks. My daughter is growing every day.” she said pride in her voice.

Lieut Chan (Sub-DH Robotics)

Magnus nodded with approval “That she is, it’s important to keep the past in the past but never forget it” He said with a smile “The Andorian Art Academy?” He asked “I’m not very familiar with the institute.”

XO

“It’s seen as the best art academy in the federation and beyond.” Chan said walking over to the painting on the wall “All the best artists in the federation have gone there. All races are accepted but of you’re not Andorian, you have to show outstanding ability. To even be considered a place. However if you get in it’s the best academy. everyone is friendly and helps each other. although you do get the entitled, snobby brats but that to be expected in such a place.” She said a fondness i her voice, but it was clear she didn’t like snobs or people who think there entitled.

“This is one of my pieces from my time there.” she said looking at the painting she had walked over to. it was painting of an ice palace, more precisely he Andorian royal palace. On close inspection the painting was of an outstanding quality. Colours, shades and light had all been intermixed with each other. Even the bits that looked white form a distance where made of complex mixes of colours. It looked almost like a photo, but it was all hand painted.

Lieut Chan (Sub-DH Robotics)

Magnus leaned in with his hands and examined the painting with great interest. He was no great patron of the painted arts but he could appreciate good work when he saw it “This is very good” He said in an impressed tone of voice “Although I will admit my ignorance on this form of art, I’ve always gravitated more towards poetry and folk music, I must remember to look visit Andoria next time we’re in the core region, maybe visit some art museums” He said thoughtfully looking at the artwork.
