As Sage made her way through her shift, she wondered how the away teams were doing. There was also the question of had she done the right thing by staying behind when they’d first returned. Unaware of the movement, she shrugged, realizing there was nothing she could do about it now, she could only wait to see what the others found out.

Later, at her desk, the doctor was enjoying a cucumber sandwich and glass of iced tea while she read an article on wildlife populations in the oceans of Earth, when there was a quick knock on the door panel and NEnsign Craig stuck his head in. “We’ve got an emergency, Ma’am…”

She was up and moving before the last word left his mouth. As she passed him in the doorway she was already in triage mode. “Okay, what do we have?”

—Sage

OOC: Its difficult to write with any regularity when the character isn’t involved in anything. I’m trying to give myself something to do.

An hour later, calm had once again settled into Sickbay. The plasma burn patient that had constituted the ‘emergency’ had been tended to and was now stable and medicated. He would be spending the next several hours as a guest of Medical while they monitored his ability to deal with the healing process and possible shock.

—Sage

OOC: Pasting in Luke’s actions.

Marius came into the medical area. “How are you doctor?” He looked about. He had a PaDD in one hand. “I don’t know when the last round of physicals have come through, but I’d like one on the XO.” He looked at the PaDD for a moment. “I know there is medical confidentiality, so I’d trust you to report what is necessary and keep to yourself what isn’t.”

Marius.

At the sound of her husband’s voice, Sage looked up and smiled as he made his way toward her. “I’ll send him a notice to come see me.” When in front of the crew, the married couple maintained professional and respectful interactions. It was only when they were alone that they allowed their ‘personal relationship’ to take over. “Is there any particular reason you want Petursson seen? Something I should know about?”

—Sage

Marius spared her one of he few smiles, revealing what might be a secondary objective. “Nothing like that.” He looked around being sure the conversation was just between the two of them. “The ship is changing. Patricia is gone, Julian’s gone, we don’t know when or if Dekker is ever coming back. You and him are going to be my top two officers.” Sage had been on the Genesis longer than he had and was the officer with the longest tenure on ship.

“I’m going to need you two to get along, and I’ve found you have a way with men with their pants off… Professionally that is.”

Marius

Shapely brows rose in an amused arch. “Patricia’s been gone for years. I doubt anyone on the roster even remembers her. But, Julien?” She looked thoughtful. Truth be told, she missed the handsome man who’d led them before Calvin took over. “And Riley…” Sage had to swallow the lump from her throat. Losing Riley had been devastating. She still didn’t let on to Cal just how much the doctor had meant to her. He’d been her best friend and she missed everything about him.

Making a conscious switch in her thoughts, she smiled up at her husband. “I don’t dislike Cmdr Petursson. I don’t know him, that’s all.”

—Sage

“Who knows maybe you will… maybe you’ll become best friends.”

“Hence the idea behind the physical, and since he needs one as a new officer… 2 birds with one stone.” He nodded slowly. “Feel free to have a meal with him if the physical is too uncomfortable. But I seen you docs talk to patients about all kinds of personal stuff without any problem”

Marius

He wanted her to get to know the first officer on purpose—wanted her to make it happen. Sage wasn’t sure how she felt about that. As the CMO, she could require him to come to sickbay for a check up. But ask him to dinner? Nope. That was just a little too weird. If later on, the two found themselves in the early stages of a friendship, then a meal would be fine—even normal. Just not out of the blue like it would be if she asked Peturrson now.

“I’ll see what I can do, but I’m not making any promises. How much effort have you put into getting to know him?”

—Sage

“His background is very similar to mine… ” Which made him both comfortable and uncomfortable. It was almost like looking at his life if he were a happier person… which sometimes had the effect of making him sad. my life I could have had on the other hand he ended up with his wife so… how sad could he be.

“It might be very easy for you.” It might not too. Calvin always felt that his and Sage’s relationship was on a level different than their backgrounds. In some ways they didn’t fit together and perhaps she and Peteursson wouldn’t fit, but he didn’t know.

Marius

Sage hit her combadge. =/\=Cmdr Peturrson this is Dr Brennan. Would you please come to sickbay when you have a few minutes, please?=/\=

Emerald eyes looked up at her husband as she lowered her voice so only he could hear. “Okay. I’ll do what I can, Cal,.But you need to understand that the Cmdr has just as much to say about him and I being friends as I do.” Sage snapped a saucy wink at her handsome Captain then. “He might not care for me at all, you know?”

—Sage

Marius shook his head. “Impossible… no one doesn’t like you.” He didn’t want to be around when Perurrson arrived. He slid out the door as quickly as possible.

Marius

=^=No problem Doctor, I’ll be there within the hour=^= The response came quickly. About ten minutes later the First Officer arrived. He hadn’t spent much time in Sickbay since being assigned to the Genesis so he took a moment to look around before making his way to the Chief’s office. He knocked on the side a couple of times “I was summoned” He said with a smile.

XO

Sage rose from the chair where she’d been sitting and smiled. “Well not exactly summoned. I did say ‘please’.” She walked around the desk, closing a bit of distance between them. “I thought it would be a good idea to examine you again. I like to keep a close watch on the command staff to avoid anything serious from happening. And whereas I can keep a specially observant eye on the Captain, that’s not so with you.”

They walked out into the bay together. “So, if you have no objection?”

—Sage

“No objections here, I’ve got a thing for health so the occasional Sickbay visit is all fine with me” He answered in his usual cheerful tone “Besides a chance to get to know any member of the crew better is something I’ll jump at”

XO

Sage gestured to a biobed. “Why don’t you have a lie down right here then and we’ll get started?” As soon as the Cmdr was situated, she activated a full run of scans on him. It would only take a few minutes. “So what do you think of the Genny and her crew so far?”

The doctor stood next to the bed eyeing the readouts as each scan came in.

—Sage

The man did as he was told, raising an eyebrow at being asked to lie down but didn’t say anything about it “I like it, the crew has been very welcoming, although I’ll admit that it’s a little daunting working with a ship full of world-class scientists” He said with a grin “Still it’s nice to know that the Captain has a similar background, something to relate with I suppose.”

Sage nodded. There weren’t many on the Genny who could identify with all the Captain had been through in his career. She supposed it was good for both of the commanding officers to have certain things in common.

The readings came out almost exactly as before, besides some old scarring and signs of previous trauma consistent with a career as a Soldier. His glucose levels where slightly lower than average most likely due to not having eaten for some time. If anything the readings indicated a lack of regular eating patterns. On his left shin, a mid-sized bruise was forming.

XO

Once the scans had finished. “Alright, Cmdr, you can sit up now.”

Sage pushed a few buttons on the console relegating the results of all scans to the first officers medical record. “Everything looks in order, but you might want to put some effort into trying to eat at more regulated times. It will keep your blood sugar from dipping too low—which its doing right now.”

—Sage
