Dagen watched and focused on each portrait as it was pointed out. Deela, his sister was only starting to show some of the lines of their mother near the time when she left home. It wasn’t unusual, though he imagined Reia with more of her features. Still, he enjoyed what she looked like now. Something about her tone … “They look nice. Have your grandparents passed on?” He asked, keeping his tone soft.

“No, they’re still very lively for people in their 80s. Gramps has turned small time gentleman farmer and gram is a retired nurse. But she lectures in several of the larger colleges a few times a year.”

He grunted in a tone that said, in essence, ‘tell me about it’. “Have you tried to find her yourself?” He asked. “I did for a time to find my sister. It’s hard.” Reia looked smaller after that admission. He shifted himself so that his back was in the nook of the couch and drew Reia about so that her back was against him. His arms slid around her. It would not be the last time that Intel people would promise the moon and deliver a few rocks.
Dagen

Reia felt very comforted by Dagen’s actions and settled herself into him as if it was the most natural thing to do.

“Yes, I tried off and on but I get tired of chasing ghosts. I don’t even know why she is wherever the hell she is. Clinically unstable etc etc. Such confusing nonsensical terms.” she said in frustration.

  • Reia

Dagen agreed. This sort of thing was extremely treatable in this day and age. His face flashed disapproval, happy that Reia was not facing him to see that. His arms closed in for a quick hug. As much as he wanted to say so on the ‘treatable’ it was only as treatable as the person wanted. His mother had gone into a depression after his brother had died and his sister had gone into her own reactive decline and ultimately disappearing. Dagen himself likely didn’t help with that, being seriously injured from that and then himself essentially disappearing after a brief courts martial, demotion and medical leave after belting an admiral, and going off in a search for his sister. But one didn’t go missing in an institution. He sighed softly and tipped his head to press his lips to her shoulder. “I know people ..” he began, then stopped. Of course she would know people too who could find others. She was in intel for ancestors’ sake. His sources would have fewer resources than hers.
- Dagen

If the circumstance had been less serious Reia would have laughed at Dagen and told him he was being cute, but she could tell that he meant his words and she appreciated him for it.

“Oh my dear Dagen, we all know people. I’m sure I’ll dive back into research again soon but you have to come up for air. I was three the last time I saw her. Who’s to say she would even want to know this strange woman claiming to be her daughter.”

Reia fell silent, lost in her own thoughts.

  • Reia

He hugged her to him. Three. That was a long time. Was it, however, the finding or simply the knowing where she was and what her condition was? The not knowing was always harder than having something to even mentally cling to. His mind slid over to Thor’s last host. Linn. She bore four children and worried for all of them; would Reia’s mother not have done that especially knowing her heritage? The holo played on in the background, mostly forgotten. Was he more passionate about this for her because of his own family situation? Yet, what had that done for him? That search had nearly destroyed his career and taken his life into darker corners still than where he had gone. It would not have taken much. “You could be right,” he said, though by his tone suggested that the jury was still out on that. Wait .. did she say dear? The memory of this came back and he basked in the tone and way she had said it and it warmed him even more than her against him.

He hung back from speaking for for a bit, listening more to the background music of the holo than the story. By the sound and look of it it was going to go on for a while. Still, as he lingered in his thoughts he was feeling the tide of the waves of Reia’s presence and the wine which was resolute in its pressure on his senses. Reaching over he took up a couple of fingers of whipped cream from the cake. One he popped to his mouth .. the other he offered to her. “Something to bring us back to the moment.”
Dagen

That sounded like just the thing. Reia thought and she licked the whipped cream off of his finger.

It pleased Reia that Dagen had done exactly what she had asked him to. In his sweet way he had saved her from herself. There would be time for chasing ghosts later.

“So when is this ski trip we keep joking about hmmm?” she asked in good spirits again.

  • Reia

Dagen’s mind was almost derailed at that question. Not quite like a train wreck, but a certain sharp unexpected turn. For by that time his thoughts had traveled about and back to where he was and the soft touch of her lips on his finger that took up the whipped cream. Those same thoughts had settled back into the now and the warmth of Reia so close to him. He had glanced to the holo only briefly to see where they were at before her question. And the question nearly escaped by him entirely. “Wha ..” he began, his mind that was virtually swimming in the ‘Reia’ pool, catching up to him. Fighting the current that that pool was taking him he came back to the now. Mostly. For in the question held hopes of fun and .. pleasant times. “.. Ski?” he said to finish that sounded more like Whazski? making him sound rather more inebriated than he was. His mind tried to access his inner calendar. “Still coming up.” For the life of him he couldn’t entirely figure out what day it was coming up, but knew it was relatively soon. “Everyone seems to be on a holodeck kick. It took me a while to get an open window for the time we’d need.” Which was not untrue. Rank did not pull weight when it came to the holodeck, well, for the most part. It was just skiing. Nothing brutal like self-training that he had been doing with the biathlon or a dangerous downhill. This was a cross country thing. Which, Dagen figured, would mean he’ll fall on his face in the first ten minutes. A date clicked into his brain then, likely thanks to Thor. “Saturday. 15:00. That’s it.” He smiled, silently thanking the little slug who had bailed him out of many a time related thing. He simply was not good with them. He could strip down a warp coil practically blindfolded but calendar dates were bad for him. Well, without Thor that is.
- Dagen

Reia couldn’t help but smile at Dagen. She had the strange feeling his mind was several places at once but, somehow, they all seemed to focus on her. Perhaps she shouldn’t have asked him such a hard question.

“Oh I wouldn’t miss it. Just let me know if you need to change the time.” she said light heartedly.

  • Reia

His lips pressed to the crook of her neck, eyes closed and breathing in her fragrance. His arms stretched out then pulled back, fingertips sliding along Reia’s thighs. “Our schedules are synched there,” he murmured. “We’re good.” He finished that statement off with a light nip at her flesh. “The cross country trail is scenic, in the mountains. Not technical. I changed the venue a little but you can tell me what you’d prefer - the hot springs at the end or a cabin in the woods.” His lips had trailed up so by the time he had finished they were just behind her ear. To Dagen a dip in a hot spring would be nice at the end, but then a fire in a cabin was nice too.
- Dagen

Reia was enjoying all the sensations of Dagen’s lips and fingers on her flesh.

“Let’s see, a cold cross country ski to a warm hot spring. As long as there’s a fire and lots of blankets it all sounds wonderful to me.”

Reia’s mind drifted and she wondered what other kinds of fun they could have in the snow.

  • Reia

Dagen’s head was spinning. He had to admit that. It was hard for him to think as much as he tried. Touching Reia. Her pheromones were taking their toll on him no matter how much he tried to push them to the back of his mind. It was like taking a shot of whiskey .. over and over .. and thinking it would not really affect him.

She didn’t answer him. His question remained in the void. His fingers followed their natural course up over her hips and along her smooth belly. Of course what she was dressed in elicited a reaction from him as he kissed her neck and hands strayed … mentally shaking his head he let go and didn’t let what was flowing through him hold back ..

And so fade to black …
Dagen

It was some days later that found Dagen in the holodeck. He had arrived early and had got the program going. It was an easy one, technically speaking. For Dagen, who had years before, nearly qualified for the Olympics in the Biathlon, a cross country ski was, or should not be that difficult. Still, he entered early and strapped himself into the skis. He had done cross country before though was hardly an expert at that. Technically he enjoyed the race and the challenge and, on other occasions, the downhill scream that made him feel alive. Today, feeling the crispness of the mountain air he found himself restless. Most of the times with Reia were … very satisfying - to say the least! Body and soul satisfying. Though they had been essentially in her world. This was his and he felt an anticipation that went beyond the day. He glanced over the snow covered mountain vista and forced himself to relax. It was lovely. Blue sky. Mountains. The faint scent of fir in the air. A trail of smoke from a cabin far away. He could see their path that wound along a wide mountain’s edge. Somewhere out of his sight lay a cabin. Beyond that was a stone wrought hotel with hot springs. He blew out, breath white carried away by a low breeze. Adjusting his hat Dagen watched an eagle make slow circles above a canyon. He knew this place. While not Trill he had been here before. Skis swished back and forth in the snow. Yes his ‘work’ was engineering, but this was his home, where he truly felt alive. As much as Dagen thought that this was him, if he had thought of it he would realize that such sensations came to him more after being joined even though none of Thor’s past hosts had done this. Well, not precisely.
- Dagen

Reia wasn’t intentionally late but she couldn’t make up her mind what to bring for the picnic portion of their time together. In the end, she had thrown a few odds and ends in a basket and had done with it. She remembered talking with Dagen about skiing at the party where they had first crossed paths. Reia hoped she hadn’t oversold her skill. It had been a few times many years ago but she had found it exhilarating none the less.

Stepping into the holodeck she studied Dagen’s form before walking up beside him and studying the landscape.

“What a beautiful setting. So stark and yet so alive.” she said softly.

  • Reia

The slight tint to the sky and purple tinge to the trees gave indication that this was Trill. “It’s where I grew up,” Dagen said then chuckled as he sent a glance back to Reia. “Okay, not grew up but spent time up here. The family ‘guys’ would make an annual trip out here. Once I became more serious about skiing I would use some of these trails as training.” His hand pointed to some areas as he spoke. “Not this one though. This trail is for pure pleasure.” A half smile was on his lips as his eyes darted about. Letting out a soft sigh he stood and turned to Reia. “I have found that on so many worlds that mountains .. places like this exist. It is beyond words in a lot of cases. I love being there.”

He pushed off with the skis to reach Reia. Her ski suit fit her well, though all suits seem to make people look .. poofy, even with modern tech in them. “You look amazing.” He leaned in to kiss her. “This trip is where you get to learn a lot about me. Kind of .. home territory.” He couldn’t say home field advantage. Everything seemed new and different in a way when seeing the world through Reia’s eyes.
