Sage hit her combadge. =/\=Cmdr Peturrson this is Dr Brennan. Would you please come to sickbay when you have a few minutes, please?=/\=

Emerald eyes looked up at her husband as she lowered her voice so only he could hear. “Okay. I’ll do what I can, Cal,.But you need to understand that the Cmdr has just as much to say about him and I being friends as I do.” Sage snapped a saucy wink at her handsome Captain then. “He might not care for me at all, you know?”

—Sage

Marius shook his head. “Impossible… no one doesn’t like you.” He didn’t want to be around when Perurrson arrived. He slid out the door as quickly as possible.

Marius

=^=No problem Doctor, I’ll be there within the hour=^= The response came quickly. About ten minutes later the First Officer arrived. He hadn’t spent much time in Sickbay since being assigned to the Genesis so he took a moment to look around before making his way to the Chief’s office. He knocked on the side a couple of times “I was summoned” He said with a smile.

XO

Sage rose from the chair where she’d been sitting and smiled. “Well not exactly summoned. I did say ‘please’.” She walked around the desk, closing a bit of distance between them. “I thought it would be a good idea to examine you again. I like to keep a close watch on the command staff to avoid anything serious from happening. And whereas I can keep a specially observant eye on the Captain, that’s not so with you.”

They walked out into the bay together. “So, if you have no objection?”

—Sage

“No objections here, I’ve got a thing for health so the occasional Sickbay visit is all fine with me” He answered in his usual cheerful tone “Besides a chance to get to know any member of the crew better is something I’ll jump at”

XO

Sage gestured to a biobed. “Why don’t you have a lie down right here then and we’ll get started?” As soon as the Cmdr was situated, she activated a full run of scans on him. It would only take a few minutes. “So what do you think of the Genny and her crew so far?”

The doctor stood next to the bed eyeing the readouts as each scan came in.

—Sage

The man did as he was told, raising an eyebrow at being asked to lie down but didn’t say anything about it “I like it, the crew has been very welcoming, although I’ll admit that it’s a little daunting working with a ship full of world-class scientists” He said with a grin “Still it’s nice to know that the Captain has a similar background, something to relate with I suppose.”

Sage nodded. There weren’t many on the Genny who could identify with all the Captain had been through in his career. She supposed it was good for both of the commanding officers to have certain things in common.

The readings came out almost exactly as before, besides some old scarring and signs of previous trauma consistent with a career as a Soldier. His glucose levels where slightly lower than average most likely due to not having eaten for some time. If anything the readings indicated a lack of regular eating patterns. On his left shin, a mid-sized bruise was forming.

XO

Once the scans had finished. “Alright, Cmdr, you can sit up now.”

Sage pushed a few buttons on the console relegating the results of all scans to the first officers medical record. “Everything looks in order, but you might want to put some effort into trying to eat at more regulated times. It will keep your blood sugar from dipping too low—which its doing right now.”

—Sage

When Magnus was seated he rubbed the back of his neck and chuckled “Right, of course. I occasionally forget to eat. I’d mostly gotten rid of the habit on Earth the past few years but Starship life has a way of creeping up on you” He stretched his arms and torso slightly “So am I otherwise fit for duty?” He asked with an amused grin.

XO

She was familiar with the problem. Sometimes Cal didn’t eat for six or eight hours when he was on bridge duty. “You know, the replicators can be programmed for a protein bar that you can slip into a pocket or a fold in your tunic. That way, you will always have a ‘pick me up’ no matter where you are. I suggest you at least try them out. Having your blood sugar peak and ebb can lead to unwanted weight gain.”

It was just an idea and Peturrson could take it or leave it, it was totally up to him. “You’re free to go. Thank you for coming by on such short notice thought. Oh, by the way, it might not be a bad idea if you and I were to get to know each other a little better. After all, we are the two closest people to Calvin so open communication between us is probably a good idea.”

—Sage

“Thank you for the advice I think I might try that” Magnus jumped out of the bed “I’d like that, Would you like to chat in your office” He indicated around the Sickbay “I think it might be better suited for such a conversation.” He said with a smile.

XO

She hadn’t expected him to take her up on the offer immediately, but Sage could roll with just about anything if there wasn’t an emergency happening—and there wasn’t. “Well, we could go in there or we could go to the lounge and have some lunch. Which do you prefer?”

—Sage

Magnus chuckled “You know I think lunch is a great idea, haven’t eaten anything since yesterday I think” He smiled and raised a hand to the door “shall we?”

XO

Sage stepped away from the Cmdr for a moment to let the staff know where she was going. Once that was done, she joined him again. “This is a good idea. I’ve decided I’m quite hungry.” Smiling, she and Peturrson left medical and headed for the lounge.

—Sage (we can start a new thread there or we can pretend we did :)

After some small talk and a turbolift ride, they arrived in the lounge. Magnus ordered himself a chicken salad with lemon soda water and found a seat near the viewport and waited for his meal partner

XO

Sage joined him a moment later with a lunch of chicken breast with avocado slices and a cucumber salad on the side. Her drink of choice was iced water. It was one of her favorite meals and supplied enough protein to make it through even the busiest afternoon. Once seated, she picked up a knife and fork, cut and skewed her first bite and looked at the Cmdr. “Okay, how about three questions, any subject, with nothing off limits?” It was a fast way to get an idea of who Peturrson was—it also left her open to his questions.

—Sage

Magnus took a slow sip of his carbonated water before answering with a smile “Alright sounds fair, apparently, I had a similar conversation with our IntSec officer” He gave a slight chuckle “I’ll start with a simple one, why Starfleet?” He asked with genuine curiosity, taking the time to eat a little as she answered.

XO

Surprised to hear he’d already had a ‘no holds barred’ conversation with security, Sage raised her brows, but answered the question honestly. “My family owns a travel business. It’s actually become rather successful and I think the plan was for my brothers and I to take it over when mom and dad got tired of the daily grind.” She chewed a slice of cucumber before continuing. “I never wanted any part of it. I thought it was boring and that I’d regret settling for it. I mean, it was our goal to design the most exciting trips through the universe a customer could afford—why do that for strangers and not for myself?”

“My oldest brother shared some of my thinking. He’s a clothing designer with his own label—one reason I have some beautiful and unique pieces in my wardrobe. The second oldest is responsible for the agency now. I’ve always loved the stars…it was a simple decision for me.”

—Sage

bump

Magnus nodded with interest, he wasn’t overly familiar with how travel businesses worked but her reasoning was sound. “I get that, seeing the universe is on the brochure,” He said with a wry smile “Alright, how did you and the Captain start your relationship,” He said delving deeper into the ‘no holds barred’ questions.

XO

Sage paused for the briefest second, her fork halfway to her mouth. Well, she hadn’t expected to have to reveal that information when she’d offered to answer anything. How did you meet? Maybe, but Peturrson’s question was worded in a very specific manner. So…should she really be honest like she’d offered to be?

Recovering from the surprise, she set her fork down and took a drink instead. “Alright, I did say nothing was off limits… I noticed Calvin in the gym one day when I was working out. He was brand new to the ship and cut quite an impressive figure.” As she remembered her first glimpse of him, a secretive smile turned up the corners of her mouth. “We flirted a bit—enough for me to believe he was interested, and I…I let him know I was open to physical intimacy if he was game.” The last part of the sentence rushed from her mouth as if she just couldn’t say it fast enough.

—Sage

Whilst the doctor spoke Magnus took a sip of his drink, his eyes not leaving Sage’s face, he was curious as to what her reaction to his very blunt and personal question would be, her response was both informative and honest. As he put his glass down he bowed his head slightly “Thank you for the honest answer, better to get an answer directly than rely on rumors and hearsay” He said simply “Well the last question from me: What do you want from your career, what’s the goal if you will?”

XO

Sage shook her head and smiled. “It’s uncanny that you chose the questions you did. They have all been a source of great debate in my life—with others or with myself.” She sat back in her chair, the meal temporarily forgotten. “I’ve always wanted a ship of my own. I mean, that is the be all end all, right? But life doesn’t always give you what you want. Still, I would like something more than this.” Here, she looked around the lounge, indicating the ship around them. “My career was on a forward trajectory when Cal and I met. We kept our relationship quiet so it wouldn’t affect our promotional paths and because it wasn’t really anyone else’s business.”

“I was a Lt back then, already the CMO here on the Genny. My record is blemish free, I’ve been decorated more than once and under Captain Julien King, I was his 3rd in command. But somehow, Cal got the promotions instead of me.” An unsettled look crossed her face then. She hadn’t talked about that particular thorn under her skin for a long time—the last time being with her husband when he told her about his rise to Captain.

Sage did her best to take a deep breath and tamp down any raw feelings. She picked up her fork again and skewered a slice of cucumber. “Sorry, it still seems to be a sore subject for me.”

—Sage

Magnus had leaned back in his seat as she talked, it seemed that he had somehow accidentally hit a sore spot. When she finished he leaned back forward and raised his hands slightly “Hey no need to apologize, I understand completely” He smiled slightly “Up until two years ago I was well on the way to becoming a Captain, it can be sore to miss out on the opportunity” He grabbed his cutlery and started cutting a piece of chicken and picked up some salad with it “I believe it’s your turn”

XO

OOC: Eeek!! Sorry I missed this one!!

IC:
The Cmdr surprised her, first with the choice of questions and then with his calm acceptance of her answers. She didn’t see any kind of judgement on his face at the less than stellar feelings behind her responses. It allowed Sage to relax a bit and adjust her opinion of the man. Perhaps she’d been too harsh in her initial assessment of him. His last comments made the first question easy. “What happened two years ago?”

—Sage
