Long range sensors showed that they were at the outskirts of a yellow sun system. There were two planets that showed civilisations. The fourth and the fifth planets. With the Merry travelling at Warp 1.5, the fifth planet could be reached in 90 minutes and the fourth planet in slightly less than two hours. The position of the planets was that they were on the opposite side of the elliptical orbit in relative position to the Merry.

They were not too far from the planets to get a general idea of the flora and fauna. The natural parts of the planets were very few as the population of the people grew. Most of the species of plants and animals were reduced to those that provide food. There were small pockets where indigenous species could be found but from their numbers it would not take a century before most of the species would be extinct.

The technology is less advanced than the Federation. The only exception is the technology for space travel. At the moment they have very advanced nuclear technology but not on par with that of the Federation with the Matter-Antimatter mix with dilithium crystals. They seem to have teleportation technology but the resolution is not great enough for living beings. Communication is still via electromagnetic spectrum.

The hail from the Merry came, on all frequencies, again, =/\=This is Rear Admiral Clogtho of the Global Pallas Space Corps. Please identify yourselves. We have you on our detectors.=/\=
-GM

Sage entered the bridge just in time to hear the voice of Clogtho asking for identification.

Julien gave her a quick nod and showed her his boyish ‘I’m-so-excited’ face for a second, then he looked forward to the screen again that showed their fast approach and cleared his throat, nodding to Marishka to open the audio channel.

As Marishka opened the comms channel she realized she was a bit excited at this first contact. She was also pleased with the thoroughness of the bridge crew and that Julien would finally have a chance to speak.

-Marishka, CIO

=^= Hello Rear Admiral. I’m Captain Julien King of the Starfleet ship Genesis, from the United Federation of Planets. We come in peace. We are explorers and we received a distress call from the ship you also tried to save, that’s why we came. I’m sorry for your loss Admiral. =^=

  • Julien King, CO

Sage understood Julien’s excitement, perfectly. She felt the same way—almost giddy with the possibilities a first contact could bring. She took a place behind the command chairs, between Calvin and the Captain, and stood with her hands clasped behind her. Once they were within range, she would initiate biological scans.

Here we go. Aevin thought. He kept his hands prepped on the helm controls like he was preparing to fly a fighter, despite the Genesis’ large size. First contact, as wonderful as it had the potential to be, made Aevin uneasy. Too many unknowns. And if it came to the worst, tactical and helm are responsible for the survival of the ship.

-Ensign Aevin, Helm

XO

Dagen turned now to watch and listen. The computer was logging what there was related to the vessel. The scans were fairly basic on the ship. Having an odd thought while the Captain replied to the ship, he stood and walked over to Calvin. Coming up beside him he spoke in a low voice for him to hear. “There is a tactical protocol in the system. Not many know of it as mostly it is completely obsolete but we had to test it before the Genny was christened. Key up Bravo Seven Seven Omicron Niner. It is a defense subroutine that is for multiple projectile targets - as in missiles.”
- Dagen, CE

Julien just nodded. He couldn’t blame his bridge officers for being jumpy. After all, all of their most recent missions had been one fight for survival after the other. In a way they all had to re-learn how to be explorers.

=/\=United Federation of Planets?=/\= came the voice inflecting slightly higher. =/\=Welcome to our system, the Pallas system. Yet surely, you can’t be using the same language as us in our system? We’ve only managed to establish one language as standard only in the last century. How are we able to communicate like this?=/\=
-GM

Marius tilted his head close to the captain. “The truth is better than deception at this point, if they don’t think we have a device, they will think we were spying on them for years to learn the language.”

Marius XO

Dagen headed back to his station and sat facing the screen. “The simple answer is to say that we possess a computer algorithm that aids us in language translation. If they had a planet with multiple languages they would understand that as they likely would have developed something similar, if more primitive.”
- Dagen, CE

Riley nodded his agreement with Marius, “Honesty seems best at this point.”

He hoped he wasn’t letting his excitement at the idea of meeting a new species cloud his judgment, but he knew there were far more cautious minds on the bridge with them. He sensed nothing beyond the ordinary wariness from the likes of the XO and CIO. When he’d joined Starfleet, he’d imagined first contacts to be a regular part of the job. They weren’t nearly as frequent as his young cadet self had hoped. To begin their deep space mission by meeting a people who were warp capable, yet appeared to pose little threat, seemed an auspicious start.

Dekker, CNS

Being the CIO, Marishka felt obliged to take careful notes and make observations the others might not. This was a first contact mission after all.

Glancing at her console, she checked the distance between the Genesis and the alien ship. Were they close enough for visuals yet? she wondered.

-Marishka, CIO

He nodded to all of them with a smile and replied, using Dagen’s exact same words, as they sounded sufficiently un-exciting.

=^= We are using a computer algorithm that aids us in language translation. Since we have peaceful relationships with many different species, the algorithm is rather well developed right now and can pick up a new language fairly fast. Thank you for your warm welcome Admiral. We would be delighted to meet you and get to know each other. =^=

  • Julien King, CO

=/\=That is convenient isn’t it?=/\= The tone of the rear admiral had become more friendly. =/\=May I invite you to our ship, the Merry? I hope to show that we do not have any ill feelings for the first people we meet outside our system.=/\=
- GM

David had remained unusually silent through the entire exchange. Riley would definitely be able to sense a feeling of anxiousness from his lover, as well as the sense that David knew more than he was letting on, a particular feeling that only Riley would know how to detect.

David cast a glance over towards the Captain, awaiting his decision.

-David Michaels, CSO

Ben was eager about this momentous occasion of first contact. He recalled a time from his village that a couple of lost hikers who wandered into the boundary. He shaked off that memory to listen carefully on the first contact.

Lt (j.g.) Park

Marishka weighed the odds of her going on this first contact mission. She could make the argument that showing diverse races, able to work together, might put these people at ease. She knew that there were other people on the bridge who could do that just as well but, ‘Could they keep them as safe as she could?’ she wondered as she made a mental weapons check. This was an inventory of everything she had on her person at that moment.

Marishka, CIO

Thomas felt he shared the same anxiety as the other Bridge crew members towards the idea of traveling to the just-encountered ships. The Admiral sounded a bit too friendly. He would at least like to see the GPSC crew on viewer before any agreements were made. It was a lot easier to discern intent from a being’s face than through their voice.

COS

Sage maintained her place behind the command chairs, but she was feeling a flush of excitement. First contact!!! It was the number one reason she’d joined Star Fleet instead of starting a private practice on Earth. Medicine was her life, but the chance to meet new species was a powerful desire for her. Whatever away team was chosen to go to the Merry, Sage hoped she was on it.
