Marius took a moment to make himself some coffee. How the hell did every Captain deal will all the paperwork… He laughed… why did they still call it paperwork.. there was no paper.

=^=Marius to Magnús Pétursson, come to my ready room if you please.=^= Marius was unusually pleasant.

Marius

OOC: SOrry completely missed this
IC:

The response came almost immediately =^=On my way, Sir=^= The slight Scandinavian accented voice came over the comm.

A few minutes later the ready room door chimed, signaling his arrival.

XO

“Enter,” Marius responded immediately. The door chime, like a phone bell, almost forced a quick response.

Marius didn’t really give Magnús Pétursson much warning and tossed him a PaDD the moment he locked eyes with him. The rationale behind why he would toss an object at the XO was difficult to determine.

“It’s promotion time.” Marius had never had to lead this discussion. “What are you thinking?”

Marius

Magnus grabbed the PaDD with relative ease although he did have a look of surprise on his face that quickly dissipated. He examined the device and moved further into the room “Interesting thought” He said with a half-smile “My part of the mission was very focused on myself interacting with the Pallasian president, the team didn’t have much more to do than sit there and smile, make the occasional comment, good comments for sure but they didn’t have a chance to do anything outstanding. Mostly I was impressed with Ensign Shandy’s ability to assess a situation. I also noticed Lieutenant Park’s actions from your little rescue mission as well as NE Dagen but I think that is more in your corner. On my end, I saw a professional crew make good impressions during a… tense first contact mission. Is there anything, in particular, you are looking for?” He asked before making his final decision.

XO

‘I’ve always been conservative with promotions. Just like I am with praise… a habit I’d like to moderate.” In a sudden bout of introspection.

“These guys have gone two or three missions without review. Julian,” Marius paused. He surmised since he was a Captain now he could call the previous one by his first name in public. “hadn’t done the last one so this is my first. Plus we also have a position vacuum. The Genesis has always operated with a second officer… if not officially, for ease of chain of command.”

Marius

Magnus nodded “With the loss of Lieutenant Dekker we have had a blow both to the chain and to ship morale, I think promoting one of the Department heads to Second officer would do much to improve morale.” He moved to one of the chairs and sat down, throwing his right leg over his left knee “Out of the four main Dep-Heads the most experienced are Lieutenant Thor and Doctor Brennan, I like Lieutenant McGregor but I’m not convinced he’s ready for the jump yet and with the loss of Dekker I’m not certain that Lieutenant Micheals is up for something like this” He hadn’t realized how much he missed having such discussions with a Captain, a one on one like this was one of the rare times he could speak honestly and openly about their officers.

“Lt. Commander Dekker was a blow almost as great as the loss of the former Captain.” Marius responded when Magnus paused, but his eyes revealed a little satisfaction. Even without warning, Pétursson seemed prepared to assess his full crew.

He then continued “Thor is a good choice, he’s served as first officer before on the Atlantis so Command is familiar to him” He tapped the PaDD, opening the Engineers file “The only concerning note in his file is the stuff regarding his altercation with admiral” He paused and looked up, a slightly awkward smile “I uh… I sat on his Court Martial panel, it’s been a long time and we’ve had a brief discussion regarding it. In any case, I don’t think that mark matters in this conversation but I thought best to bring it up.”

“I’m not too worried about him throwing a punch at me… Or you for that matter.” There were few that he encountered that could handle him in hand to hand combat. “Although that breach in self-control is notable, but should be a lifelong black mark.”

He cleared his throat “On the other hand we have Doctor Brennan” His smile turned sardonic “I believe you are familiar with one another” He joked “She’s been on the Genny longer than most and is a respected member of the crew, she has advanced bridge training so she wouldn’t need much to rise up.” He finished up “In my opinion, the choice lies between those two” He realized that this was an uncomfortable choice for the Captain.

XO

The pleasure in Marius’ eyes dissipated immediately at the mention of his relationship with Sage. He responded flatly. “Brennan’s promotion recommendations are mostly going to come from you to remove the appearance of favoritism. She actually is the longest tenured crew member, even longer than me.” A fact that chapped at her to no end.

Magnus nodded without comment, he saw he had crossed the invisible line. On the bright side he now knew for a fact where it was.

Marius threaded his fingers together. “Maybe we should do this in reverse order. discuss which junior officers are moving up. When we reach the senior officers we first decide if they have achieved a promotion and then of those decide if they also are ready for 2nd officer. I think Park and Tigress have enough time in grade for a promotion. Michaels, Brennan also. Thor is relatively new in comparison to those officers but he still has 2 years Michaels has to have three - Brennan is ten. Frankly everyone should be up for a promotion based on time in grade.” If they did that they would have a whole mess of Lt. Commanders.

Marius.

Magnus nodded “Lieutenant Park has shown that he’s a capable officer. Do you want to push him up in rank or position?” He asked “Just fill the pip or is he ready to lead the Tactical department as Chief?” He asked, either as fine but both felt a little much.

“You can’t be a chief without a department and isn’t much of a department for him to lead.” Tactical usually fell under security in so much of having a department head.

“Tigress did seem a little stuck, she came to me once worried about not advancing, Normally I’d like to have her Chief’s advice on if she’s ready for the responsibilities of being a Lieutenant. But I have nothing against promoting her”

XO

“We should loop in her Chief. She seems to have some socialization issues, not that, that is an issue that should prevent her from going to JG.”

“What do you think about the set of promotions… that would have a number of officers who match you in rank. Do you think that’s going to be a problem. Which also makes a second officer selection very important.”

Marius

Magnus considered the question for a moment “I don’t have a problem, that’s why there’s a chain of command, I’ve served on ships with several commanders serving on board, it’s nothing new. I would also suggest we set a third officer officially in case there are any potential issues. Right now if we both keel over there would be some chaos” He said with a wry smile “But that can go on the back burner, in any case I have no issue with same ranking officers” His smile widened “I don’t intend to spend my forties as a Lieutenant Commander”
