it sounds like it’s sentient. It’s making decisions on it’s own.” Ben wondered what long range scans were saying about what’s up ahead. For all he knew, the Genesis could be surrounded by more of these creatures. That alone feeling of uncertainty made him feel uneasy about following the creature.

Lt. Ben Park, BO/Tactical

Siobhan has been so absorbed in the readout, she was hearing what was going on around her, but it wasn’t quite registering. She was trying to figure out if the various signatures were possibly both part of the creature or residue from it. The idea of ‘sentience’ hit her ears and she smiled. “Simply being born and moving in a direction doesn’t denote obvious sentient life.” She turned to the one who had spoken. “I don’t mean to belittle the observation, but some creatures that are ‘created’ act on instinct. Since we don’t know if it’s heading to food, family, or a flame, like moths, we can’t assume it is sentient. But then again, we can’t dismiss the fact, either. Moths go to flames on instinct, despite it being destructive. Until we know where this thing is going, I believe caution is the best answer. We certainly don’t want to use the ship to see what happens if its path is disrupted.” It was then she had an idea, “Though if we can get close enough to toss something in its path, we can see if a ‘single minded’ thing to get where it’s going, or willing to go around obstacles.” She glanced at the Captain then to see if that was possible.

Siobhan
Xenobiologist

As she was speaking, the creature started accelerating agin and yet was expending less energy. It would enter light speed in 20 minutes. Although at this speed, there was no indication that it was going into warp.

GM

“What kind of relativistic effects are we going to see as it approaches warp speed this way?” Marius turned. It could take years for the creature to get there while moments passed for them… if he did his math correctly.

“Do a course projection extend it out 1000 light years.”

Marius CO

The time dilation effects from the creature’s point of view is that time would remain fixed in one point as other points move on in time. From the sensor information gathered and the computer’s extrapolations, the creature would encounter a spatial anomaly that was about 10 light years away. There were stars and systems that it would encounter should it move on from the spatial anomaly.

GM

“What happens when that thing enters the anomaly?” Marius was a shooter not a scientist.

Marius

Magnus looked at the results of the scans, in his mind he went through possible worst-case scenarios, most involving the ship and some annoying science-fiction crap they dealt with all the time, he was hoping they’d be able to make contact with some sort of sapient or at least sentient life.

XO

The Genesis’s sensors did not have enough data to make a fair analysis of the anomaly. At their maximum sustainable warp, they could reach there under 2 days 10 hours.

GM

“I don’t have enough data to form a decent hypothesis sir,” David said. “That anomaly is 2 days 10 hours away at maximum warp.” He had never encountered a creature like this before, so all they could do at this point was wait and see.

-David Michaels, CSO

“What do you need to make a hypothesis? We might be a few days away from a problem… on the other hand, baby could be heading home for all we know.”

He looked at Magnús, “The way I see it we have two possibly three things going on simultaneously at three different locations. The analysis of the nebula we just left, the baby light speed here, and the anomaly 2 days away. I’m certain we can’t split the Genny three ways and I don’t know if a shuttle cuts it.... ” Marius left out the question but he was asking for suggestions.

“Agreed” Magnus said and went straight into his chair console to check something before making a suggestion.

“Anyone.” After a moment he opened the question to the bridge.

Marius

Ben had just popped onto the bridge to check the readouts on the security station, when he heard the Captain’s question. “What about using the fighter sir? It’s much faster than a shuttle, plus has the ability to defend itself if necessary.”

Ben - SO

“A good tactical suggestion” Magnus said to the new security officer “But for this, I think it would be best to send an away team on our Runabout, a small science crew to study the nebula whilst the Genesis follows the creature. The Liberty class has a number of microprobes and can support a team of four for a short term mission.” He crossed his legs and turned to face the Captain “A crew of two or three Scientists plus a team leader to scan some space clouds whilst the rest of the ship follows…” He paused and smiled “Baby, as you put it”

XO

<after decision for next action made>

Some minutes after, the creature disappeared from the ship’s sensors, only to appear about 0.9 light years from its former position but still travelling in the same direction. Its velocity had reduced to 83% light speed and maintained that that speed.

GM

Reia had been following the bridge conversation carefully. It was true she wasn’t a scientist and she liked her place on the bridge but, if she needed to be elsewhere, she wanted to be ready at a moments notice.

  • Reia, CIO

Siobhan had been working on the readouts. She still didn’t have enough data either. “To be honest, Sir. The nebula isn’t going anywhere. There is no reason not to just come back later. The probe can track the information till our return. And if we’d planned to come back for a left behind team, we may as well just come back and do the investigation then. As to the ‘baby’ as you called it, and the anomaly, my suggestion would be to head for the anomaly. We can see if it is calling to the thing, or if it changes at all on its approach. The entity isn’t doing anything but running for that spot, so it will get there eventually as well. And as we circumvent the path, we should still be able to keep in contact with it enough to know if it suddenly makes a sharp right turn.”

While she was mostly fascinated by the creature, itself, she was also curious as to how strong and what exactly the anomaly was doing to draw the infant in. Having time to study the strange destination before the thing arrived and as it was arriving, was something she couldn’t pass up in her mind.

Siobhan
Xenobiologist

Ben tended to agree with the Xenobiologist, a shuttle by itself would be defenseless away from the mother ship. His security training was kicking in. “Sir, one more suggestion if I may. If we do send a shuttle out with an away team, send the fighter along as escort,” Ben hoped he wasn’t overstepping his bounds, but security of ships personnel was his duty and concern.

Ben - SO

Magnus stood up and placed his hands behind his back. Although his expression was still pleasant his normal smile had faded “The Nebula may not be going anywhere but that doesn’t mean we skip an opportunity to investigate two things at once” He still hadn’t gotten a feel as to how the Captain wanted his bridge to operate but this was getting perilously close to speaking out of turn “A study of a nebula may take a couple of days which would allow the Genesis to complete its observation of the anomaly and the creatures passing through it.” He then turned to the young security officer “We’ve had no signs of danger in the immediate area and launching a fighter without one is not exactly standard protocol Ensign” He spoke a little softer to the young ensign. Personally he had no vested interest in sending an away team, right now he was simply making sure the Captain was given the best options to choose from. “Besides, a runabout is hardly defenseless. We used to use those to travel the Gamma quadrant all the time” He said with his half-smile returning.

XO

“Sorry sir, just trying to make sure all the “i“‘s are dotted and “t“‘s are crossed.” Ben checked the security console readouts and headed for the turbolift.

Ben - SO

“Hawk fighters can’t do much more than warp 4. Not to mention its a two day trip out and then back. I don’t think anyone wants to see if they can do five days in a little one seat craft.” He made a face. “I’ve spent time in a hole not much larger than a fighter cockpit… trust me it gets unpleasant fast.”

“If you permit me, I’d be willing to help coordinating the away team. I can manage the helm of the runabout Sir.”

Ben Park

The creature seemed to be gliding at 83% light speed and holding there. Energy levels do not seem to be diminishing.

GM

“We have three missions and a full roster of capable officers.” He looked at Magnus. “Make the arrangements.” He nodded and turned back towards the screen. Marius knew where he would send who, but as his usual he would defer so he could learn more about what his team would do if he wasn’t giving all the orders.

Marius

Magnus stood up and gave the captain a nod “Mr Park you’re with me. Mr Wilkinson, you can take the Tactical in the meantime, it’ll be good practice” He said with the same half-smile “Commander Micheals, I’ll need at least one Scientist for this mission, have whomever you wish to join me in the shuttlebay in fifteen.” He glanced at the Xeno-Biologist “I suspect Lieutenant DeNaris will be most useful for monitoring ‘baby’ but anyone you can spare” He gave each scientist a quick nod before moving to the turbolift.

XO

OOC: Just so I’m clear the away team is heading to study the creature, yes?

IC: David nodded, then looked over to Siobhan. “You’re on creature duty. Have fun.” He smiled. “Oh, and take Tigress with you.” He knew that Tigress would be happy to be chosen for an away mission, and she might have some unique perspective on the matter.

Ben immediately moved to the Tactical console behind and slightly to the left of where the XO was sitting. He quickly scanned the console and noted that all systems were operating within normal parameters. “Tactical is manned and ready sir.” Ben scanned the bridge as a flurry of officers left.

Ben SO

Marius turned to the Security officer, Mr. Wilkinson, Plot a parabolic course to the sub space anomaly. When the shuttle is away, set speed at warp 8.”

Marius

Ben’s fingers moved rapidly over the console. “Sir, course is laid in. Awaiting shuttle launch.” All Ben had to do was touch the console controls and they would be at warp 8.

A moment later, the turbolift doors opened and Sage walked out onto the bridge. Seeing Calvin in the center chair, her mind made the switch to professional instead of personal. He wouldn’t have a private conversation with her in front of so many others. Making her way over to where he sat, she clasped her hands in front of her body. “You wanted to see me, Sir?”

—Sage

“We have a space borne high impulse creature heading towards a subspace anomaly. The XO is going to remain with the creature in a shuttle, we are going to the anomaly. So I need a senior officer on the bridge.”

Marius
