V’Lath stood outside of the Medical area of the Genesis, according to his PADD Dr Brennan was the CMO, and technically his Department Head. Hopefully he could accomplish two tasks at once, check in with medical, and with his Department Head. Slipping the PADD back into his bag he entered the Medical area.

T’Lora turned around from where she had been taking inventory. She spotted V’Lath almost immediately, and quickly put her hand into the ta’al. “I am T’Lora. How may I assist you?” She dropped her hand, clasping them behind her back as she walked over to him.

V’Lath returned the greeting, “I am V’Lath the new counselor, and am reporting on board. I understand that Dr Brennan will be my department head, would she be available ?” V’Lath then noted the scar running down the side of the young woman’s face. “Pardon me, I make no judgments without facts, but was your scar an accident or purposeful ? I sense that we must meet and talk of many things at a later time. I was raise on Earth and many Vulcan rituals and traditions have little or no meaning to me.”

V’Lath - CNS

T’Lora inclined her head slightly. “I too was raised on Earth, as a direct result of my injury. It was inflicted purposefully.” She was glad he was so straightforward. T’Lora gestured to the chairs. “I will retrieve Doctor Brennan for you.”

She turned and headed deeper into sickbay, looking for Sage.

V’Lath took a seat to wait for the doctor. “Thank you” he said to the retreating back of the young woman. He knew of the ritual scarring inflicted to symbolize exclusion or shunning, but it was rarely practiced anymore. He sensed from the way she almost recoiled from his presence that she was very tentative about relationships. She must have had a difficult time as a child with such a mark. He mused to himself, “I must speak to her and ease her mind about the fallacy of preconceived conceptions of acceptance.” During his time on Vulcan he had not been readily received, even by family members, due to his being raised on Earth.

A few moments later, Sage and T’Lora arrived back in the med bay. She’d been surprised to find out they had a new counselor, and thought her concerns about the last one turned out to be correct. The woman had been to young and too ‘green’ for the responsibility the job required. As she approached the male Vulcan, Sage introduced herself.

“Ensign V’Lath, I’m Cmdr Brennan, Chief Medical Officer of the Genesis. Welcome on board.”

—Sage

“Thank you Cmdr., do you prefer to be referred to as Dr. or by your rank? I need to check in, and as you are my Department Head I thought perhaps we could accomplish two tasks at once.” Damping his empathetic senses he held out his hand to the Cmdr.

Sage smiled. “Either is fine, Ensign.” She shook his hand quickly, not wanting to prolong the touch. A Vulcan as a doctor was one thing, but a Vulcan as a counselor? She wasn’t comfortable with that. What pool was Calvin pulling their psychological officers from?

T’Lora looked curiously at his outstretched hand, concluding that he must do something similar to her to avoid the intrusion into others’ minds. She nearly laughed realizing they had asked Dr. Brennan the same question the first time they met.
-T’Lora

V’Lath had noticed the young doctor again as she checked the young engineer whom he had recently checked in, again she had placed her hands behind her back rather than make any contact. He was sure that she knew damping and shielding techniques or she wouldn’t be here now as a doctor. She intrigued him, not only as a fellow Vulcan, but to him as a counselor concerned with the crews’ mental health. There were obviously issues in play here, most likely from her childhood and growing up. He studied her closely, observing her facial expressions and body language as she examined the young engineer.

Sage noticed V’Lath’s interest in observing T’Lora. “If I’m not bothering you, Ensign V’Lath, how about you walk over to that biobed and I’ll get initial scans on your medical health?”
