V’Lath stood outside of the Medical area of the Genesis, according to his PADD Dr Brennan was the CMO, and technically his Department Head. Hopefully he could accomplish two tasks at once, check in with medical, and with his Department Head. Slipping the PADD back into his bag he entered the Medical area.

T’Lora turned around from where she had been taking inventory. She spotted V’Lath almost immediately, and quickly put her hand into the ta’al. “I am T’Lora. How may I assist you?” She dropped her hand, clasping them behind her back as she walked over to him.
-T’Lora

V’Lath returned the greeting, “I am V’Lath the new counselor, and am reporting on board. I understand that Dr Brennan will be my department head, would she be available ?” V’Lath then noted the scar running down the side of the young woman’s face. “Pardon me, I make no judgments without facts, but was your scar an accident or purposeful ? I sense that we must meet and talk of many things at a later time. I was raise on Earth and many Vulcan rituals and traditions have little or no meaning to me.”

V’Lath - CNS

T’Lora inclined her head slightly. “I too was raised on Earth, as a direct result of my injury. It was inflicted purposefully.” She was glad he was so straightforward. T’Lora gestured to the chairs. “I will retrieve Doctor Brennan for you.”

She turned and headed deeper into sickbay, looking for Sage.
-T’Lora

V’Lath took a seat to wait for the doctor. “Thank you” he said to the retreating back of the young woman. He knew of the ritual scarring inflicted to symbolize exclusion or shunning, but it was rarely practiced anymore. He sensed from the way she almost recoiled from his presence that she was very tentative about relationships. She must have had a difficult time as a child with such a mark. He mused to himself, “I must speak to her and ease her mind about the fallacy of preconceived conceptions of acceptance.” During his time on Vulcan he had not been readily received, even by family members, due to his being raised on Earth.

A few moments later, Sage and T’Lora arrived back in the med bay. She’d been surprised to find out they had a new counselor, and thought her concerns about the last one turned out to be correct. The woman had been to young and too ‘green’ for the responsibility the job required. As she approached the male Vulcan, Sage introduced herself.

“Ensign V’Lath, I’m Cmdr Brennan, Chief Medical Officer of the Genesis. Welcome on board.”

—Sage

“Thank you Cmdr., do you prefer to be referred to as Dr. or by your rank? I need to check in, and as you are my Department Head I thought perhaps we could accomplish two tasks at once.” Damping his empathetic senses he held out his hand to the Cmdr.

Sage smiled. “Either is fine, Ensign.” She shook his hand quickly, not wanting to prolong the touch. A Vulcan as a doctor was one thing, but a Vulcan as a counselor? She wasn’t comfortable with that. What pool was Calvin pulling their psychological officers from?

T’Lora looked curiously at his outstretched hand, concluding that he must do something similar to her to avoid the intrusion into others’ minds. She nearly laughed realizing they had asked Dr. Brennan the same question the first time they met.
-T’Lora

V’Lath had noticed the young doctor again as she checked the young engineer whom he had recently checked in, again she had placed her hands behind her back rather than make any contact. He was sure that she knew damping and shielding techniques or she wouldn’t be here now as a doctor. She intrigued him, not only as a fellow Vulcan, but to him as a counselor concerned with the crews’ mental health. There were obviously issues in play here, most likely from her childhood and growing up. He studied her closely, observing her facial expressions and body language as she examined the young engineer.

Sage noticed V’Lath’s interest in observing T’Lora. “If I’m not bothering you, Ensign V’Lath, how about you walk over to that biobed and I’ll get initial scans on your medical health?”

—Sage

“Not at all Doctor, and as a counselor is it not my job to observe and evaluate the crew ? V’Lath moved to the indicated biobed. “I don’t want us to start off on the wrong foot doctor. I feel you have some apprehension in my role as a counselor. I can understand that in view of my predecessor and their somewhat eccentric behavior. If Starfleet didn’t feel I was fully qualified to fill the position or if I felt the least doubt, I wouldn’t be here.” V’Lath sat on the biobed and awaited the doctor’s ministrations.

There it was—the first intrusion into her psyche. As he made himself comfortable on the bed, Sage pulled a tricorder from the pocket of her med jacket. In a conversational tone, she spoke, “I don’t want us to start off on the wrong foot either, Ensign, so I feel it necessary to say this next statement. I don’t want you to ‘read’ me at any time for any reason. My opinions are my own. If I want to share them with you, I will. Otherwise, I hope you’ll keep your abilities in check when dealing with me.”

She began the scans. (OOC: Does she fine anything?) “Don’t get the wrong idea. I have nothing against Vulcans, in fact, I appreciate their intelligence and ability to suss out the truth of things by keeping emotions out of situations. As you noticed, we have a doctor here in sickbay who is Vulcan and she’s very capable.” Her eyes read over the findings of the routine scans.

Snapping the tricorder closed, Sage crossed her arms and regarded the male on the table. “You are fresh out of the Academy, aren’t you? So you shouldn’t have much experience with actual patients who can choose whether or not to seek you out. I’m curious about your reception here on the Genesis only because Vulcans are known for their…lack of empathy? Aloofness? How do you span that bridge with a patient who is suffering from emotional trauma?”

—Sage

OOC - No medical problems.
V’Lath listened as the doctor spoke and examined him.” Doctor, I never “read”, as you call it, anyone without their express permission, but I do watch and observe body language and facial expressions, and listen to idioms of speech. They can tell much about a persons mental state, and that is part of my job. You, doctor are part of the crew and I must evaluate you also. As for the other, no I am not fresh out of the Academy, I actually taught classes there for several years, in psychology, psychiatric principles and practices, and meditation and relaxation techniques, after I did graduate. So yes I have many hours of actual clinical experience.” He sat back up on the bed. “I was raised on Earth and many “Vulcan” traits and traditions were not practiced by my family. Vulcans may seem aloof, but we are not. We are able to suppress emotion when necessary, but I have a great deal of empathy for my patients, and seek what is deemed best for their mental health.” He stood from the bed, and stretched slightly. “Doctor, I mean this with all due respect, I look forward to us working together, you taking care of the physical, and I the mental, .......but , I feel you may have “anger issues” of some kind. Please don’t be offended, you seem tense and edgy. I intend to start teaching relaxation and meditation classes soon, and you would be most welcome.” V’Lath looked down at the doctor and smiled, again holding out his hand, hoping he had not offended her. He tended to be somewhat blunt and straightforward at times.

OOC - Shouldn’t have attempted to post so early, especially with no coffee yet. Big post-it now on monitor to check V’Lath/Ben.

V’Lath had not told the doctor, nor anyone aside from his instructors on Vulcan, but since his studies there he had been able at times to see a faint aura emanating around most beings. It wasn’t an exact science and he rarely relied on it in his evaluations and diagnoses, but it did give an indication of their mental state. As he looked down at the doctor she was projecting a faint pinkish aura, which may or may not mean anything.

Sage listened with interest. It was always fascinating to hear what other psychologists’ opinions of her were. “Actually, I hold a degree and license in psychology as well, as I used to be the counselor on this ship. That makes my curiosity about you and your abilities very valid. I’ve been with the Genesis a long time and have come to know and care for a large number of its officers.” Her voice was still conversational, easy and relaxed. “I’m not sure where you got the impression I have anger issues, but I can assure you you’re wrong about that. I may get annoyed with my husband every now and then, but that’s normal in an intense, personal relationship.”

She tucked an errant hair behind her ear and looked at his outstretched hand before grasping it. “Just one more quick question. If you’ve been teaching and seeing patients for years at the Academy, why are you still an Ensign?”

—Sage
OOC: Please, please don’t think any of this is personal. I am playing a character who has a lot invested in the Genesis and its crew and she’s just trying to look after them. This is all character driven and she’s not speaking angrily or with any superiority. Her questions are just things she would ask. :)

OOC: I definitely don’t think any of this is personal. I am enjoying the interplay between our characters.

V’Lath smiled again, and released her hand. “Doctor, I was once a Lieutenant, up for promotion to the next rank, but I took the reduction in rank to gain this posting. There were no immediate postings for a more senior officer. Rank is not really that important for me, I am not married and my needs are fairly simple and amply supplied the Federation and the Genesis. I truly enjoy helping those who have mental or psychological issues, and felt I could best serve by being out among the fleet.”
