It was three days since the wedding of Dagen and Reia and she had spent them happily sleeping in his bed, lounging on his couch, and using his shower. But there wasn’t very much of Reia in those quarters yet so, she had made her way back from the office early on that third day, taken a quick shower, and was now padding about the quarters, dressed in a sheer green robe, with slicked back damp hair, PaDD in hand, diagramming was she might want to incorporate things that would make her feel more at home.

How much did her really like this carpet? she wondered. Her small feet had always loved hardwood floors. The glass top table was very nice but where could she put her shelving unit with all the candles? The more she paced and planned the more confused Reia got. And there was still that call to the parents to make later.

  • Reia

With the advent of the creature in the nebula Dagen and Reia had not really had much time off for themselves but they had talked about visiting Earth and her grand parents when next they had leave. They still had not had time to call their respective families to give them the news; they had been, ah ‘busy’. Time in engineering had not been without its jibes, even unexpected ones, since the wedding. Seraph topped all of them in her dry Vulcan statements in saying ‘Evidently, Commander, marriage suits you and sufficient copulation has improved your mood while on duty.’

It was with that thought in mind that he came back to their quarters. At some time they were going to have to combine quarters. They had talked briefly about it but other .. things .. came up. He was humored from Seraph and wanted to share that. Entering their quarters he blinked seeing her dressed as she was and for a moment or more he forgot completely what he was going to say. About to exclaim out a ‘You’ll never guess …’ when he saw the confused look on her face. The contrast between her dress and her expression caught him up short. “A problem, my love?” he asked, approaching to kiss her in greeting.
- Dagen

Reia paused for a few seconds. She hadn’t expected Dagen home for at least an hour. By then she had hoped to have a few things worked out. Obviously that wasn’t going to be the case.

Sighing, she flopped onto his long couch and patted the spot next to her.

“These quarters are a nice size for one, or even two people and I don’t have a lot of things but, it’s all just so damned awkward and I don’t know what you’re attached to and what you’re not, carpet, hardwood floor…”

Dagen slowly moved to that spot and sat down. Apart from VIP quarters and the Execs these were the biggest quarters on the ship. He was confused and looked around the room to try to see what she was seeing and admittedly failed. Dagen was far from an interior designer and it showed with much of the space still being like a stock shot of a typical cabin. He’d learned to travel light - and, technically the old Class F shuttlecraft that he had lived out of for years kept his ‘things’ limited. Lin was a good decorator. Even Thrace did pretty well in a dark gothic kind of way that would be more fitting on a set of the ‘Raven’ than anything. But Dagen was just a tosser. Toss this here. Toss that there. He had some holos up and keepsakes but .. he tended to live in what he was given and not change much. Was she complaining about the design of the quarters? That raised a bit of ire as he took part in designing it. This was a navy ship not a cruise liner, but they too had small bunks.

It was at this moment that Reia tossed the PaDD onto the glass top table and simply shrugged.

He watched the PaDD clatter across the top; at least they made them tougher than older devices and could take that. He frowned. His mother was that way too with them and was typically oblivious. As a teen he did a lot of fixes on things. Was Reia the same way? Despite his own growing frustration he found her shrug in that sheer thing to be sexy. Such a contrast. Scratching his temple he sighed and reached to put his arm around her shoulders and pull her to him.

“Whoever said being married tot he Chief Engineer was going to make interior decorating easy can bit it.”

  • Reia

“My only contribution to this place,” he said, then smiled, “besides the mess is the bed and a few things on the shelves and walls. Otherwise it is factory direct.” The toe of his boot scraped the carpet. “I grew up with carpet and more holos on the walls than you’ll find in a museum gallery. Dad liked gadgets but couldn’t work them for the life of him. Between my sister and I we were classic messies.” He paused. “What do you imagine?”
- Dagen

Reia stopped and looked at her new husband. If they stayed this way, in this particular position, for too much longer, they would end up not redesigning the place again and she had promises Mary Jameson that she could take over the quarters Reia was vacating in 48 hours.

“Something with a little warmth. Something that looks like two people who love each other live here. Keep the carpet if you like, I can get over that but, I would at least like to movemy shelving unit in. I like the way the candles reflect off of that particular type of glass and that’s where I have all of my family photos you know?”

Reia had added that last bit a little snarkily.

  • Reia

Dagen looked around. Looked warm to him. The temperature was good. It was warm enough. Yes, he could listen to the memories of Lin and her sense of decor and all that but damn it, he helped design the place. Sure he hadn’t put much effort into his quarters. There were other things to do than decorations. He had a lot of reading to do and a department to run and for these last months his new wife to court. What was she doing talking about a shelf. Bring it over. She was more of an interest to him than what there was. But it was her last statement that caught him up short. Which contrasts with her tone.

He stood up suddenly and looked around trying to see where it would fit. Of course it would but he wasn’t much of a decorator. Designer yes. “Okay,” he said in a way that may have been a touch too placating. “I get it.” He did. Family and history was very important to Trill. He shrugged. “Lets get them over and whatever else. You can collect the small things and I can get the boys to help me take the rest in a few days.”
- Dagen

Reia looked up at Dagen. His attempt at understanding her still missed the mark just a bit.

“If a few days is all you can spare I can have RJ and Mary here in an hour. It’ll be done in three. Then everybody will be happy… I think. Or, I could just behave like a CIO and you’ll never really know I’m here love. It’s up to you I suppose.” Reia said calmly.

She had never shared quarters with anyone. Even in the academy people in charge of the dorms had managed to isolate her because of something having to do with some other half Orion female that Reia never quite understood.

When she had been assigned to any mission, or ship, she had pretty much lived alone and kept to herself. Spending nights with Dagen were fun but, living with him on a permanent basis was something she was completely unprepared for. Perhaps he was too.

  • Reia

Dagen had become quite sensitive to her pheromones. It was like a kind of perfume that went before her such that on occasion when she had come to ‘hide’ in his office to surprise him he had known she was there just on that basis of sensing them. He let out a soft snort that was reflective of her thinking she’d not be noticed not realizing that it might be construed in another way. His expression was hard to read but it bordered on trying to be patient with someone who just didn’t know some things that were fundamental to him. His fingers scraped across his five o’clock shadow. She was in a hurry but Dagen didn’t get why. He’d hoped to have a kind of last night in her quarters but that seemed to be dwindling. “Okay,” he said. “You get RJ and Mary to help gather the personal things. I’ll see if Deeg and Bot are able to help with the larger things. We’ll need a place to lock them in.” Powered force fields, magnetic clamps, whatever you wanted to call them they were needed to keep larger furniture things like shelving and the like from falling over on ships and just couldn’t be ‘put’ anywhere.
- Dagen

Reia had a feeling they were heading towards a complete breakdown in communication. Sighing, she stood up, reached across the table, and picked up the PaDD she had tossed. This had the unforeseen consequence of her robe falling open. Glancing down, she shook her head before sitting down close to her new husband and bringing up a full picture of her quarters, and his, side by side.

As much as Dagen was edging on he precipice of frustration his eyes didn’t miss the parting of her robe that was casually left open. Was that intentional? They were batting the tennis ball from one court to the other but just not connecting and he felt that he was missing integral parts here, which, as his thoughts niggled back to Lin, figured that much of that was emotional. But when the adrenaline was up it was had to dance around those land mines.

“I don’t think you understand what I’m trying to say and I know I’m misunderstanding you. So before one of us ends up sleeping on the couch, will you just ignore my damned pheromones, set the atmospheric controls to maximum, and listen to me?”

When Reia’s eyes met Dagen’s they were tinged with frustration, exasperation, and a bit of hurt.

  • Reia

He could see all that was going in in her eyes, his own ranging from his own frustration to confusion. He ignored the latter half of what she said out of assuming she was airing out her being vexed vocally, but he did force his attention to her. Her expression shook him; he wanted to solve this but right now it was like a damned jigsaw puzzle. As much as he was an engineer he disliked them. He looked at her again then down to the PaDD that he assumed had something vital on it. It rested in her hand that was propped on her thigh that was partly covered. Taking a breath he said, “Show me.” And after saying that hoped that it was something that was intended.
- Dagen

Reia put aside the fact that Dagen might still be missing the point and showed him all that she intended to have moved.

“Most of my furnishing are just replicated pieces of whatever but the shelving unit was actually made by a friend of our family’s.” she paused and looked at Dagen with a soft smile on her lips, “I remember the first time you came to my quarters you commented on the dark wood and the marbling of the glass. I appreciated your attention to detail when I oculd tell your eyes were definitely on something else. I thought we could put it over here.”

“It’s nice,” Dagen replied. “It’s funny how one can sense when something is not replicated but is real.” Truly it gave Dagen a kind of tingly feeling as though in the presence of something special or old. He chewed his lip as he listened, his eyes flashing back from her thigh to the PaDD, flushing a little giving note that said ‘busted’, seemingly bringing past and present together. He rubbed at his chin again and looked up.

She indicated a place on the floor plan of his quarters that, in her opinion, seemed relatively bare at the moment and wondered if it would be a good time to discuss the bedroom but decided to wait for his comment instead.

  • Reia

He had a good designer’s eye but not interior design. The Trill liked where it was in her quarters. It fit there. Here he could only guess on that. “I’d have to see it but sure,” he said. It was an honest answer that revealed that he had been quite used to 3D architectural simulations rather than having to imagine it. He could see Bat on the other end of it as they walked it over. Was that it? Seemed a lot of hullabaloo for one notable bit of furnishing. He would have to make sure that he could anchor it in place though. That would be a hell of a heavy unit to fall on a person.
- Dagen

“Well I’m sure you remember the color of the shelving unit. At least you’d better.” she said teasingly, “I’m just thinking we might need to change the color of the walls a bit so that it doesn’t clash too much with t he wood and the glass. The carpet is up to you. Keep it, switch it out for wood, whatever.” Reia said.

Dagen blinked and his brow furrowed. He actually didn’t remember the color but, thankfully, Thor would, or at least could flash the image up for him. At least he hoped he would. The little slug did have a mind of his own and could sometime be churlish. Fortunately he caught the tease in her tone and relaxed; it wasn’t a test. He looked about at the walls. What was wrong with that color? He thought she liked it. Fortunately changing the shade was simple in this day and age. “To what color?” he asked. His head was spinning a bit now but not from pheromones but from trying to assimilate this. A part of him was thinking that that was not much and that he could deal with much more while at ‘work’, but somehow this felt like .. well, it was change and home wasn’t supposed to change. But then there was a huge change with Reia becoming a part of him, and, with that, he supposed, change was forthcoming. His eyes flickered to the carpet. He had given no thought to that one way or the other. “I guess one thing at a time there,” he replied.

She would have preferred wood but decided it wasn’t worth arguing over. These quarters belonged to both of them. It was finally a place that she could call home and she wasn’t there to take over.

Shifting positions, she handed the PaDD to Dagen and wrapped one of the throw blankets she had added to the couch around her. Her quarters were much warmer and she had not asked him to raise the temperature of his.

  • Reia

He felt and watched her shift, helping her with one of the blankets by tugging a corner that was not easily coming unfolded. A part of him was amused in watching her do this; she could wear the most revealing thing and then cover up in feeling cold. However, he did have the sneaking suspicion that that was intentional as it was alluring to him both ways.
Dagen

Reia let Dagen help her with the blanket he was her husband after all and she did enjoy being close to him.

Sighing in contentment, she smiled before glancing at the wall and carpet.

His eyes shifted reluctantly from Reia to where she was looking.

“Nothing too drastic with the wall. Just add a bit of sand to the under tone maybe. Warm the color up a bit. And as for fastening the shelving unit, you know we can just bring the one’s from my quarters right?” Reia smiled and laughed a bit at that wondering why it hadn’t occurred to Dagen.

  • Reia

“Ummmm …” Dagen murmured. Sand?! Most of the beaches on Trill had a green undertone to it due to the composition of the crust. Some were a really nice light green tone, just off white. But Earth was all over the place. Black to white to everything in between. He understood it generally meant a brown color that Dagen thought was muddy. But, that said, he had no idea what the beaches of Australia were like. As he looked at the wall he was utterly clued out on what ‘sand’ meant. Scratching his forehead that was furrowed in thought he let out another “Ahhhhh ..” when he caught what she said about the fasteners. People just didn’t get it. In the old sailing vessels there were rims around the tables so things didn’t fall off in the swaying of the ship or in storms. Fast forward to this age there were gravitic ‘studs’ in the bulkheads that held things to the walls, but they needed adjustment. About to remind her of that Dagen felt a small jolt as Thor poked his kidneys. Perhaps something to ‘not’ bring up.

He was rather back to where he started on this with not really knowing the end of things. “I can call Bat to help me bring it over.”
- Dagen

Reia was about to toss the PaDD again but sighed and set it on the table in exasperation.

Dagen was back again in the ‘what did I do now?’ realm, utterly clueless.

“Mary is in my quarters, with half of her stuff moved in, waiting to bring it over right now. Why don’t I call her and have her bring it over? I’m sorry, I guess I haven’t been explaining myself plainly enough. It’s just a shelving unit after all.” Reia wasn’t exactly certain where to go from here. Wheter she should see what he had to say or call Mary on her own, that thought was interrupted by her comms.

“Er, I thought two would help protect it. Shelving can be awkward for one to carry,” Dagen tried to explain.

=^=Lieutenant Shandy, this is Ensign Cross, please don’t forget you and Commander Thor have an incoming subspace in five minutes.=^=

That stopped Reia cold. She glanced at Dagen and raised an eyebrow.

Dagen blinked. By the look on his face he had no clue either; this time Thor wasn’t helping remind him at all. Subspace connections often had an alert set up especially if they were originated from elsewhere to give the people back on ship some time to get near a unit. Certainly most of the time it would be expected. He gave a small shrug and a shake of his head.

=^=Acknowledged… Who from?=^= she asked quickly standing up and walking towards the bedroom.

  • Reia

He stood and followed Reia .. wanting to be with her when the computer replied. As an engineer he could have any number of calls in from colleagues though they were more often than not scheduled and business related. It wasn’t the time for his parents to call, but they could call at any time.
- Dagen

Reia glanced over her shoulder at Dagen wondering why he was following her into the bedroom when all she was going to do was change clothes. Whomever was calling couldn’t see her like this, a filmy green bathrobe was not her idea of appropriate attire for any but the closest of friends. Luckily Ensign Cross cut what might have been another frustrated exchange between the newlyweds.

=^=I’m sorry ma’am, you mean you don’t know?=^= the Ensign asked nervously.

Luckily this exchange was taking place on audio only as Reia shifted from one outfit to another.

=^=If I knew that Ensign, I wouldn’t be asking you now would I?=^= she growled sitting down on the edge of the bed to refasten her ankle bracelet and glancing up at Dagen with another pleading look. Did he have any idea what was going on?
