Well, it was his folks. It had to be. Unless it was one of his friends. Perhaps the Trill Symbiot Commission checking in for an ‘audit’? But still that signal would have been identified. He shrugged inwardly. They would see soon enough.

“It’s on you babe. Whatever you want to do.” she said softly before kissing him on the cheek and brushing past him to head back out to the living room where they could take the call.

  • Reia

They couldn’t ignore the call. Reia’s kiss and brush brought him back to the now from any running down a shopping list of potential names. They would soon see. He turned in the seat and followed Reia back out. Waiting for her to sit he sat close beside her and slipped his arm around her shoulder. It wasn’t a conscious thought. It just happened.

=^= Ensign, patch us through =^= he said.

A moment later the viewscreen there flashed but was only fuzz, though vocals were there.
“Did you break it?” came a male voice.
“Of course not,” said a woman’s voice.
“Well I’m not seeing anything. Did you have to press that button there?”
“If it wasn’t meant to be pushed then why was it there?”
Another voice in the background was faint but sounded like someone trying to help.
The woman’s voice continued. “Well, Dagen can fix it.”
“Here let me just ..” said the man’s voice.

Dagen turned and whispered in Reia’s ear .. “My folks.”

“There,” said the woman’s voice. “It’s clearing up.”
Indeed the screen was forming into a picture that showed the couple slightly over middle aged bent over the screen that, by all appearances looked to be in a cramped shuttle cabin. There was a long pause as they took in the scene.
“Dagen!” his mother said, a wide smile forming. His father looked speechless.

“Mom .. Dad ..” Dagen began but was cut off by his mother.
“Don’t talk now. We’re almost there. We knew you were coming close so thought we’d stop by for a visit!” She beamed. This time it was Dagen’s turn to be speechless.
- Dagen

Reia was speechless. She could feel the couch behind her and her husband’s arm protectively around her. She knew the people on the screen were his parents and was there someone else? Did they just say they were coming here, to the Genesis?

She looked back and forth between the screen and Dagen, silent and dumbfounded, she had absolutely no experience with in-laws, or husbands for that matter. This nimble, young, strong CIO wanted to melt through the deck into the floor below but, maybe it would be nice if Dagen introduced her first.

  • Reia

There was a collective pause. Dagen was silent. Reia was silent. His parents seemed to be waiting for a reaction to the ‘good news’. His mother was beaming and evidently expecting response. His father, dressed conservatively as usual was not looking at him but to … Reia.

Dagen snatched his arm out from around Reia and, under the screen’s window, took her hand in his. Recovering from the suddenness he said, “Where are you?” Then, “Mom, Dad, I’d like to introduce you to Reia.” He glanced at her with a growing smile. “We’ve just recently .. married. More an elopement.”

Somehow his father seemed utterly nonplussed by this. “Congratulations you two.”
His mother feigned a ‘shock’ and then a beaming smile that grew brighter. “Just knew it when I saw you two there. Dagen you need to call us more. Imagine the shock to your father’s heart with news like this.” A rolling of the eyes and a ‘what can I do’ gesture was the response that was ignored by her. “We’re not far out ..” she turned her head and said to the figure in the background ‘How far now?’
‘About 40 minutes ma’am,’ came the reply.
“Can you pick up the pace at all? I have a new daughter to meet.”
‘Uh I’ll try ma’am.’

“There, we’ll be there soon. We’ll meet you .. uh wherever we meet you. A bay thing, place. And you dear, welcome to the family. You will have to show me that bling and tell me all about this. Bye!” The screen blinked off.

A half hour. Dagen looked at Reia. What could they do in a half hour?
- Dagen

Reia looked at Dagen and swallowed hard, her heart seemed to beat out of control for a few seconds although that was probably just her imagination in the quiet.

“A half hour? Really? They’re going to be here in a half hour… Okay dear husband of mine, we have three very important things to do. First we need to inform the Captain and you need to let him know you had no idea this was going to happen. Second, I’d like to get my shelving unit in here because it will ad warmth to the place. I was going to surprise you with the wedding pictures and a picture of our first date that Mary managed to find. But there you have it.”

“Captain,” Dagen said with a nod accompanied by his rubbing his chin in thought. At least they weren’t on a ‘mission’. Oh ancestors! he had no idea how long they were planning to ‘visit’! “Right,” he added then blinked as the second thought came around. ‘Who took pictures?’ he thought. “I can get some boys to help with the shelves,” he offered. Tasks. He was good with tasks. He remembered that Reia hadn’t thought that it would take that much to get it here but delegating might help them with time.

Reia paused and squeezed Dagen’s hand looking down at their interlaced fingers before smiling up at him. Her diamond eyes glittered with mischief even in this stressful situation.

“And I suppose, according to your mother, you have a half hour to come up with a wedding ring that befits her new daughter because, my love, that was something we never got around to. Before you ask, we don’t have time for a quickie. Last time we tried, you were late for work.”

If Dagen could ‘pale’ with his already light complexion he did so, then flushed. She knew him. He squeezed her hand as his mind calculated the ‘possibility’ there of managing all three in that time, along with meeting them at the shuttle bay. Then he blinked. “Late to the bay not good, right?” he said

Pausing, she leaned in and kissed his cheek, slowly dragging her lips to his ear.

“So maybe you should be a good boy for the rest of the day.” she whispered.

  • Reia

Being ‘good’ hadn’t particularly entered his plans when he had come back from his shift. Thankfully they called at that time. He suspected his father had something to do with that in ensuring that they called after he’d be at work. His mother really didn’t think of those things. Reia’s voice was getting firmer as she talked but at the start of the announcement she looked almost afraid. He kissed her softly close to her ear and replied, “They won’t bite, love. That’s not to say I won’t later.” Pulling away he knew that any more seconds close to his wife and he’d ‘rethink’ that quickie. “Captain, right.”

Moving aside so that Reia could herself make calls, Dagen tapped his badge. =^= Thor to the Captain. I seem to have a dilemma and a request. =^=
- Dagen

=^=Marius here, I’m not sure I can help your with with either Lieutenant Commander, but give it a go.=^=

Reia smiled at Dagen pleased that Marius had responded so quickly.

Reia nodded at Dagen as he began preparing for the arrival of his parents. She smiled as he moved aside but didn’t need to actually make comms of her own. She merely picked up a PaDD and typed in the following message.

-Mary, RJ.

-My new quarters with the shelves and all the pictures ASAP and don’t forget the candles.

Dagen paused to watch Reia tap out a message. That was certainly another way of doing it. Leaning against the end of the couch he hooked one leg onto the cushion while waiting for the Captain to reply. Given the time he could be eating and the comms AI would have not dubbed this as a priority call. Still, as he watched the punctuated motions of Reia in getting ready he knew that the term priority was relative.

Setting it down, she jumped to her feet and began arranging the quarters. She knew that Dagen had a lot of miscellaneous engineering paperwork and the like. Throwing anything away would probably be a bad idea so she would settle for shifting some things into neater piles and he could be frustrated with her if he chose to be.

  • Reia

Still waiting Dagen watched his random clutter being piled. In the end it was as assorted and chaotic as before - only in one pile. He wasn’t sure he quite approved of the pile - it was as though it stared at him like a pouting inbox whispering that it needed to be attended to. Any sense of annoyance was a distant sensation that was more than covered over by the immediate nature of his parents arriving and in watching Reia move about the room.

=^= Thor to Shuttle Bay. Perkins, are you there? =^= He tried tack number two.
=^= Bryan here =^= came a female voice, definitely not Perkins. His inner chronometer suggested it must have been around shift change. =^= You’ve got me. How can I help you Chief? =^=
=^= We likely are getting a shuttle in in about the next half hour. =^= He tried to remember the shuttle interior that he saw. =^= Civilian class. Small. =^= A pause. =^= My parents are aboard. I’m just working to clear this with the Captain but wanted you to be aware too to expect them. =^=
The return voice sounded amused. =^= That didn’t take long, Sir. Mother’s intuition? I’ll be ready and will let you know the minute they are on a course for landing. =^=
=^= Thanks Barb =^= Dagen said, letting out a relieved breath. That was one more thing worked out.

As he watched Reia through this conversation he gave her a ‘wink’ when he caught her eye. He felt better in doing something about this; it calmed him some. In a way he was relieved too. Decorating was not his strong suit and he’d be happy to ‘slide’ that over to his mother and Reia to just, well, do.

Marius

Reia winked at Dagen as the door chimed.

She showed Mary and RJ in silently and directed them on where to put the shelves. Once they had them set where Reia had suggested, they began moving things off the hover dolly.

“RJ. Those are the wrong candles. I’ll put those in the bedroom. I want the green one’s set and burning. They have a rather alpine smell to them.” Reia explained as RJ went to work.

They reminded Reia of the crisp ski trip with just a hint of the logs burning in the fire where Dagen had proposed the first time.

Mary grabbed the box from Reia’s hands, walked into the bedroom, and set it down. The young woman could see her friend was flustered and wanted to do what she could to help and the less time RJ spent in Reia’s quarters the better.

After RJ finished lighting the candles on the bottom shelf he reached up and set the tall one on the top shelf.

“Pictures Lieutenant?” he asked with a dopey smile.

That smile reminded Reia that she should really reset the atmospheric controllers.

“Computer, reset the atmospheric processors for these quarters to maximum.”

The computer chirped.

“Unable to comply. The atmospheric processors are malfunctioning.” the computer replied.

Reia looked from RJ to Mary to Dagen. Mary looked from RJ to Dagen and back again. She was the only person that knew about her brother’s condition.

“Ma’am. I think my brother and I should probably go now. Family pictures are so personal and all.” Mary said trying to steer her brother towards the door.

Reia nodded, smiled, and just let them go. Suddenly there was too much to think about. Maybe arranging the pictures would help.
