SNIP

Siobhan swallowed hard. Apparently she wasn’t as over it as she thought she was. Looking down at the shut off PaDD as if it would bolster her courage somehow, she finally glanced back up at the woman. “Admiral Draper. But please we can’t just go accusing him. He is really good at covering his power plays. With me, he had me doing all kinds of menial and dangerous things. But sometimes he sent one of his pet officers along so he couldn’t be accused of riding me. It was just a simple thing he would say, I even sent Abel along. Would I do that if I was trying to punish her? But Abel was always just there to watch and see to it I did whatever it was he sent me to do. And when it wasn’t Abel, it was some other flunkie boot licker of his.” She actually shuddered remembering now the things she did just to keep her career. And now Macy was dealing with him.

She clenched her jaw and shivered once more. All kinds of insubordinate thoughts running thru her head.

Siobhan
(The X scientist person)

Hearing the name of the Admiral, Sage bit her lower lip. Draper was the one who had sent her on a secret mission of her own. He’d threatened her career if she didn’t do it and it had cost her dearly. Not only had the mission turned into something that took much longer than it was supposed to, on her return trip back to the Genny, her shuttle had been fired upon and she’d sustained the near fatal head injury that cost her three months in a hospital and six months of amnesia. She had no fond feelings for Admiral Draper.

“Believe it or not, I’ve had my own experience with that particular officer.”

For half a second, Siobhan was shocked, then she exhaled and relaxed. “So she isn’t over exaggerating. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, at this point. I just don’t know what to tell her to do. There really isn’t anyone over him that she can take it up with. And it’s an unusual mission, but not one that’s so outlandish that on its face, will be considered out of the realm of her job description.” She sighed once more and shook her head. “If only I could go in her place. I’d know, then, if this was aimed at her directly or just out of convenience.”

She shook her head. “I’m sorry you have had a run in with him as well. Though I am glad you are in one piece to growl about it.” She smiled, but it didn’t quite meet her eyes.

Siobhan
X-scientist

Sage sipped at her coffee, elbows propped on the arms of her chair, cup between both hands. “Draper has been around a long time and has many cronies in his corner.” She worried her bottom lip with her teeth as she continued to think over the situation. “He isn’t the only one with friends, but we do need to be careful. We’re going to need proof about what he’s doing, and we’ll need witnesses that are willing to testify against him if it comes to that.” She looked at the scientist across the desk and set her cup down. “I know you’re worried about your friend, but we can’t say anything yet. If you tell me her name and where she’s assigned, even what her mission is supposed to be and when, I might know someone in her vicinity that could help us keep her out of trouble. It’s a big universe, though.”

Siobhan took a deep breath. “But won’t helping her get you in trouble? Suddenly adding intel she doesn’t have, or adding people to her party might draw suspicion.” She thought for a long moment. She wanted her friend safe, but she had to worry about Sage as well. “Nera. Nera Markeson. That’s her name.” She slid a small data stick from her pocket and set it on the table between them. “This is all I have. Her file as well as the communications between us so you know the story. She’s willing to testify against him. But I don’t know if anyone else would.” She almost collapsed back into her seat. “I want to keep her safe. We were in the Academy together. But at the same time, you are a crewmate and I worry about you more. If that makes sense.” She shook her head, trying not to growl as she gnashed her teeth and wished it was her this Admiral had tapped out to pick on. She’d see to his attempts being not just foiled, but turned back on him.

Siobhan
Xenobiologist

Sage looked at the data stick between them. “Good, that’s a start. I have a feeling if we look into the last few years of orders he’s given to female officers, we’ll find what we’re looking for. It’s going to take some digging on our part. We’ll need to come up with a good idea for a reason to review his records—something innocuous, so no one looks deeper into what we’re doing. Between the two of us, we can contact individuals and ask them the circumstances surrounding their missions while making them feel comfortable enough to open up to us.” She leaned forward and picked up the stick. “Meanwhile, I’ll review the information here and see if I know someone in her area that might be able to get her out of the mission.”
