SNIP

Sage sipped at her coffee, elbows propped on the arms of her chair, cup between both hands. “Draper has been around a long time and has many cronies in his corner.” She worried her bottom lip with her teeth as she continued to think over the situation. “He isn’t the only one with friends, but we do need to be careful. We’re going to need proof about what he’s doing, and we’ll need witnesses that are willing to testify against him if it comes to that.” She looked at the scientist across the desk and set her cup down. “I know you’re worried about your friend, but we can’t say anything yet. If you tell me her name and where she’s assigned, even what her mission is supposed to be and when, I might know someone in her vicinity that could help us keep her out of trouble. It’s a big universe, though.”

—Sage

Siobhan took a deep breath. “But won’t helping her get you in trouble? Suddenly adding intel she doesn’t have, or adding people to her party might draw suspicion.” She thought for a long moment. She wanted her friend safe, but she had to worry about Sage as well. “Nera. Nera Markeson. That’s her name.” She slid a small data stick from her pocket and set it on the table between them. “This is all I have. Her file as well as the communications between us so you know the story. She’s willing to testify against him. But I don’t know if anyone else would.” She almost collapsed back into her seat. “I want to keep her safe. We were in the Academy together. But at the same time, you are a crewmate and I worry about you more. If that makes sense.” She shook her head, trying not to growl as she gnashed her teeth and wished it was her this Admiral had tapped out to pick on. She’d see to his attempts being not just foiled, but turned back on him.

Sage looked at the data stick between them. “Good, that’s a start. I have a feeling if we look into the last few years of orders he’s given to female officers, we’ll find what we’re looking for. It’s going to take some digging on our part. We’ll need to come up with a good idea for a reason to review his records—something innocuous, so no one looks deeper into what we’re doing. Between the two of us, we can contact individuals and ask them the circumstances surrounding their missions while making them feel comfortable enough to open up to us.” She leaned forward and picked up the stick. “Meanwhile, I’ll review the information here and see if I know someone in her area that might be able to get her out of the mission.”

—Sage

“How about a review on equality? It seems he is targeting females. If we can find a way to convince someone to help us look into it, we can make it about how much he sees females as equals in The Fleet and maybe it will even get him bragging. Or we can find a way for him to see it some other way so he can say See, women aren’t cut out for this. Look how many have failed at simple missions. Either way, if we can make it seem he is the one being praised, maybe he’ll brag and give all the records up himself.” She knew it was a long shot. But to be honest with herself, she knew it was all a long shot.

“That might work, but Admiral Draper isn’t stupid. We’ll have to word it just right and he can’t know that I’m involved. He knows he screwed up with me, so any mention of my name would make him suspicious.” Meanwhile, Sage activated her computer and connected the data stick to see what orders Nera Markeson had been given. “It says here that she’s supposed to report to Entara One three days from now and report to someone named Gerard Stabler.” She got quiet and thoughtful as she tried to think of someone she might know in that vicinity.

—Sage

Siobhan nodded. “I don’t recognize the name, Stabler. But I can look into him and see if he’s gonna be a problem. I wish I was security minded. I would find a way to get myself on that mission to look after her.” She growled slightly and had to set her cup down before throwing or crushing it.

Standing up to pace, the chair no longer ale to comfort her, she shook her head. “Ok, so we need to find a way to stroke the man’s ego enough that be blurts it all out for the record because he thinks it will work to his advantage. We need a reporter, preferably a male. Someone who can convince him that women in The Fleet is a bad thing and try and praise him for what he’s doing in ‘giving them a chance to prove themselves’.” She glanced back at Sage and wondered if her train of thought was too far out there, or a viable option.
