Fitness with the Captain

Calvin sent out a general call for any interested parties to work out with him… the message suggested comfortable footwear and clothing consistent with a warm climate. It had been quite a while since he ran a fitness training… in fact it had been years. He was still the chief of security when he did the last one. He smiled to himself. There were some nice memories attached to that exercise.

Marius

Ben had climbed through 3 Jeffries tubes like he usually does to get to the Gym. “Sir, it’s been years since you did this.”

Park

Just after Park arrived Magnus entered the room “Captain, Park” He said with his usual smile “You know, sir, I’ve been hoping for an opportunity to work out with you” he said with an even wider grin before looking at Ben “Do you think you can keep up lieutenant?” He said in a teasing manner, he was over fifteen years older than the Tactical officer.

XO

Marius just looked and chuckled deep in his chest. “Its not a straight workout… I like them a little complex.” Marius was wearing a grey slightly threadbare Colonial Marines Tee shirt. Where he found one so worn was hard to figure out since no one needed to keep distressed clothes any more. What was truly distressing was the shorts he elected to wear. They were almost embarrassingly short. The only thing that kept it from being laughable was the unusually good shape the Captain was in.

OOC: Okay, I’ll bite ..
IC:
Dagen had hummed and hawed about this invitation since it had come up. He had undertaken the use of the holodeck for personal training and entertainment since arriving. At the beginning he had thought it was going to kill him, but he had improved over the ensuing couple of years to the point that now, taking up this offer, he hoped that he wouldn’t entirely embarrass himself. He was of an age with the XO but that didn’t mean he was on the same fitness level as the man, or of the younger crew. “Gentlemen,” Dagen said in greeting. “Captain, I trust you will take it easy on us,” he said with a light tone.
- Dagen

“Sure… that’s exactly what I’m going to do.” He looked about for a moment… “I guess this is us. Computer four backpacks, 1-45 kilogram weight 3 at 42 kilos.” He smirked as if he was the funniest man in the world and handed Dagen the 42 kilo pack. The others he passed to the rest. It took a moment for him to strap on his backpack of 45 kilo and then did buddy checks on everyone weight being sure that the weight was on the right locations to avoid injury.

He turned and faced a trail that seemed to appear out of nowhere leading off towards an impossibly thick jungle-scape. He trotted off.

Marius

Magnus smiled as he strapped on the backpack quickly. For a moment he considered asking for the same weight as the Captain but decided against it. He followed Marius, turning around to Ben and Dagen and gave both men a smile and a wink. This was going to be fun.

XO

Dagen was used to carrying weight during a workout. Of course his workout was winter style with winter gear and carrying a rifle in doing a biathlon. This was … going to be embarrassing, he thought as he struggled with the pack. Putting 90 pounds on his back was not a simple matter, but he kept on with a straight face thinking that what embarrassment he might feel was nothing compared to the Captain’s shorts.
- Dagen

The temperature was rising to an uncomfortable 35 degrees Celsius. The jungle scape seemed real with requisite sounds and rustles… irritating humidity. What was fortunate was that the trail was clear and smooth… it did grade upward a few degrees making the run itself more difficult. Marius set the pace which was not very fast. The best description was a relentless lumber. He seemed like a giant locomotive with every exhale sounding like the steam escaping with each chug. This lumber continued for about two kilometers before they reached a 4 meter wall. Marius paused, “Lead off.” he said to no one in particular.

Ben was struggling with the weight of the pack which was slightly noticeable to others as he was adjusting the straps to it. “Aye Sir.” As soon as he said that he started climbing up the wall. Ben was not known to be a very avid climber, but he could still hold his own.

Lt. Ben Park

It was not that kind of wall. If the people had not known this was a hologram they would have felt it was impossible to exist in this environment. It was an intentional, smooth vertical hazard without any projections or hand holds for climbing.

Dagen did not do well with heat. He was a winter sporter and this was not friendly to him. Backed by the buzz of insects that he, as a joined Trill, did not appreciate rendered the trip distracting and sweltering. Fortunately it was more of a relentless hike than a run. He felt it in his legs which were starting to feel numb by the time the got to the wall. The engineer in him looked at the wall and thought ‘walk around it’ .. but it wasn’t something he thought was in the cards. Sweating and panting he watched Ben approach the wall.
Dagen

OOC: is it just a straight wall? One with netting? Rock climbing wall bits?

The team certainly could run around the object, but indeed that was not the objective, as the trail did not extend in those directions. The wall itself was as if one side of a building was just sitting there in front of them. It didn’t have significant depth, perhaps 10 to 15 centimeter, so once on top of it a person could sit astride or even stand if they had good balance.

Marius

OOC: Surprise!!!

IC:
Curious about the open invitation to join the Captain in some kind of fitness exercise, Sage decided to stop into the holodeck and see what was up. Calvin hadn’t engaged in an open invitation for quite a long time. Wearing a pair of blue bike shorts and white sports bra, with her hair pulled up into a topknot at the crown of her head, she entered the holodeck just in time to see the last of whoever had gathered, disappear along a trail. Was he carrying a backpack? She chuckled. Of course he was, Cal never did anything the easy way.

Glad she’d missed being assigned something to carry, Sage jogged quietly in the direction the group had taken.

It didn’t take long to close the distance enough to see who was taking part. Cal—oh God, he had those shorts on!! Her lower body clenched reflexively. That man was fine in every sense of the word!! She saw Petersson, Thor and Park too, who looked a little less comfortable with their loads.

OOC: Only one who actually liked his shorts… but that’s why they’re married.

Thinking not to bother the foursome, Sage kept her distance until they were presented with a wall. As the men stared at it trying to figure out a way over, she walked into group. “Hi. I was just going to stay back and not bother you, but I see we have a challenge now.”

—Sage

“Hey Doctor Brennan, you’re not bothering us. Apparently from what I’ve gathered, we’re supposed to keep up with the Captain. What’s your advice on that?”

Lt. Ben Park

She glanced from the tactical officer to her husband and took a deep breath. “Well…I don’t actually have any advice on that. Most of the officers I’ve seen try, aren’t successful, but I do wish you luck!” She grinned at some internal thought and then waited to see what developed.

Magnus gave Sage a friendly smile as she arrived.

Dagen looked at the wall again and slipped off his pack that thumped to the ground in an utterly unwholesome way. “Right, two of us on the bottom to boost the strongest of us up there. We’ll pass the packs up and over and then ourselves.” He looked cheekily at the Captain. “Or we could use the packs as a mound to stand on.” He moved to the base of the wall. He was ‘not’ the strong one of the bunch.
- Dagen, CE

“I’ve never used the packs as steps,” He made a face, the packs weren’t really firm enough for that, if they stepped on them they would squish more than support. On the other hand the two person lift plan was bound to work. Marius paused… “And who might be the strongest?” he was actually used to the strongest being the base and everyone just climbing him/or her… but this would work too.

Marius

Magnus gave the Captain a wry smile “Oh I don’t know about strongest but I’m quite certain that you’re the heaviest one of us” His tone was playful “It looks like maybe four meters, The Captain and I can push you three up, once up top you can help each other then the second to last is pushed up and the final member jumps and grabs another’s hand” He said looking at the wall. It reminded him of Starfleet Security training, he used to make his students to a similar exercise.

XO

Dagen shook his head. He could not see that work. Four meters was twice their height and there was no way that anyone up on top could help another from the ground. And certainly nobody was going to heave a 90 pound pack up and hope the person atop could keep a hold of it, pull it up and drop it on the other side. “Are the packs coming with us?” he asked, looking around for a rope, or, alternatively, some kind of viable vine to utilize. Heck, was there a ladder about? It would be insane to not check on that kind of thing.
Dagen

There were several ‘holographic’ vines, however the packs themselves were just weight, no tools to be used for cutting, climbing, or any other building activities. So if you wanted to use vines you’d have to pull them down by hand and then weave them together likewise by hand. Marius was over 2 meters tall, standing hon his shoulders would put another 2 meter person at about 3.8 meters. Lifting your arms over your head would put you over the edge of the wall. But that would presume you could lift your own body weight.

Marius

“Do the packs have any kind of straps we can use to help pull others up?”

—Sage

OOC: They were standard appearing backpacks, so the shoulder straps were adjustable to the point of being unstrung. So theoretically one could unstrap both shoulders and using the backpack itself would make maybe a meter/meter and a half long device with a 40 pound lump in the middle.
OOC: You said 42 kilo, or about 90 pounds there skipper.

Magnus gave the doctor an amused smile “You should really take some advanced security courses” He said in an amused voice “Once you pull yourself up you lie on the wall and use your hands, it’s a fairly simple manoeuvre, I’ve seen a dozen Federation Marines go over a similar wall in less than a minute. The final one only needs a small running start, jumps up the wall and grabs someone’s hand”

XO

“Interesting that my training program would resemble the Marine Course.”

Magnus suppressed a snort, deciding to just shoot the Captain a wide smile.

She looked from Magnus to the wall, considering his suggestion. “Alright, that might work, but how does the very first soldier scale a wall with no hand holds in order to assist the others?”

—Sage

Ben spoke up “I’ll go up the wall next. Hopefully what the Captain taught me when he was my Chief stayed in my memory” Ben grinned and waited to see who was scaling the wall first.

Park

Marius watched the debate with interest. He had learned how to do this by watching the previous marines go. It was interesting watching the logic process when someone didn’t already have the answers.

The two people being used for a base could be scampered up and then leapt off to get the top of the wall. If the jumper had enough strength to “chin/pull up” Marius was pretty sure all of them had that level of strength.

Marius

The vines were out and no ropes. Dagen frowned at the wall and gave it a glare that, were it a person, it would have collapsed and they’d simply walk over it. Perhaps they could push it over and be done with it. Or, alternatively, knock a hole in it. He sighed and rolled a sore shoulder. Running with that weight on his shoulders was challenging and was sore. His legs had only just stopped shaking and feeling the ‘light’ run. “I still think two of us on the ground and launch a person up to grab the top. Could do two of the lighter people before looking at any shoulder standing.” He looked at Sage and maybe Ben.
- Dagen

Magnus went to the wall “Sometimes the best way to get things done is just doing them” He turned his back to it and squat sat, putting his hands together “Let’s start with the eager Mr. Park” He said with a smile.

XO

Sage took another step forward. “I’d say just toss me up, but I’m not sure where my assets would work the best. I’m much stronger than I look.” She couldn’t even come close to matching the men in upper body strength, but she trained in swim or dance nearly every day, so she truly was stronger than most women when it came to holding her own.

—Sage

“This isn’t a straight pull situation anyways.” Marius explained. “You aren’t lifting a dead weight with a rope or something where you are responsible for all lifting power. You have a team mate on the wall and a person being lifted. So the lifting demands are split… not quite as much as three people should because everyone is pulling one way or another, but you certainly don’t have to lift the full body weight of anyone.”

Dagen was relieved that he was joined. He knew there were rocky moments in his past with the XO, years back with his courts martial. That had built into Dagen a cautious demeanor with him and had been a kind of uncertainty of his posting here and mixed feelings, at least initially. However, he had not known Magnus then and over the past couple of years the ‘caution’ was melting away. As he worked at linking hands to boost Park Dagen ran through the image of Park flying straight over the wall. That, however, was likely a wishful scenario of him being lighter than he looked.
- Dagen

Ben took a few steps back so he’s at least 10yds from the wall. He started running at a quick dash pace towards the wall.

Lt. Park

OOC: Is he going to run at Dagen and Marius and spring off them? Or is he directing this solely at the wall???
