“Twenty marines could have made a pyramid that we could have walked up to get over this,” he commented as he made a lunge with Magnus’ help …

He hadn’t needed their help to top the wall, but both she and Ben reached out to help the Captain. “You know, you men could at least try to make me feel like I’m helping in some way.”

—Sage

.. his lunge took him up .. reaching for available hands which, at the crowded top of the wall, seemed that Marius and Sage were the closest …
- Dagen

Calvin hung down the wall farther than she did, but Sage was very limber and leaned over till she was stretched to the limit. She saw Dagen launch himself up off the XO’s body and as chance would have it, he was angled more towards her and Cal. She held her hand out to catch one of his and readied her body to catch his weight.

—Sage

Magnus turned around to look at how Thor was doing with his climb.

XO

Magnus would see that he had initially missed the Captain’s hand, or the Captain had missed his while in flight, and that he currently dangled by way of Sage having his right arm. “Good grip,” he said to her, more out of gratefulness than surprise as he floundered in the air pivoting his left arm and body to bring it in line with a second try with Marius. “If you would be so kind, Captain. I don’t mind hanging around but there are better places ..”
- Dagen

Marius half leaned half swung over to take part of Thor’s weight off of Sage. No matter how strong she was, she was lighter than Thor and he could find a way to pull her down - instead of her pulling him up. “Sure, sure… like I don’t know what you are up to.” He groaned as he was out of position. “Grab the girl’s hand.” He nodded. “Smart.”

Marius

“I could say you were looking at the girl rather than my hand,” Dagen replied with a grunt as his swinging left hand finally made contact with Marius’ and stabilized. Not that that was a problem, he thought, given his predilection of watching Reia often enough.

“You could say that,” Marius agreed.

With hands-on-hips Magnus looked up at the two officers pulling the third up with a wide grin on his face “What I wouldn’t give for a Holo-Imager right now” He called up them.

XO

“Dare I say that there is a history feature with the holodeck?” the helpful engineer thought to blurt out …

Holding Dagen’s weight alone put a strain on Sage’s arm. She didn’t even try to lift until Cal had a firm hold of the other one. Eventually the two of them got the engineer up on top of the wall. She had scooted behind where Thor sat now. “Since the two of you are going to have to help the XO, I’ll be taking my leave of you now.” With that said, she brought her other leg to the far side of the wall and pushed off, landing safely. “I’m fine. Let’s get Magnus over so we can continue.” While they all looked back over at the XO, Sage rubbed the muscles in her arm.

—Sage

Settled Dagen looked down. That still looked a long ways down even as it looked a long ways up from the ground. He didn’t even look as Sage slid off and landed with a soft, earthy thud. He saw his pack looking sad and crumpled with the others. It would keep. Now for Magnus. Dagen tested his balance at the top. Ben was there too. Dagen supposed it would be a matter of where Marius thought to go.
- Dagen

“Come on big man… last up…”

Marius

On the other side of the wall, Sage massaged her arm. It was possible that holding Dagen’s weight on her own had strained the inner muscles of her arm. She flexed the arm and then extended it, testing for soreness. Yes, there was some but it wouldn’t force her to leave the program. She turned and looked up, wondering when Magnus would show his face over the wall.

—Sage

“Go on ahead Doc we’ll catch up” Ben replied. As he steadied himself on the wall for the next person.

Park

Magnus gave the Captain a smiling nod and took several steps back and prepared for a run. It didn’t take him long to reach the wall at his speed, he jumped up then used the wall to run up as it were and reached out a hand to grab the Captain’s large hand, outwardly he made it seem easy but he was too well aware that he only just managed not to fall on his behind.

XO

Ben smirked and commented “now you understand why I ran to the wall ten feet back”

Park

Sage was looking up from the far side, one hand shading her eyes. “Is he up yet?” She wasn’t going to venture off ahead of the men, this was Cal’s program and knowing him there might be traps or detours or critters. She shivered at some of the life forms that came to mind.

—Sage

Marius picked up his pack, nodded towards the group. “That was only one barrier,” he glanced at his chronometer, “We are not setting any records.” He took off on the path at a pace greater than his previous. “lets make some time.”

Marius

Sage followed. She wasn’t carrying a pack, so she caught up to Marius quickly. “You don’t mind me joining the program, do you? The ship is so quiet I was kind of bored and knew you had this in the works, so…here I am.”

—Sage

“I’m always happy when you join doctor.” Marius said professionally. He leaned in and said in a manner only she could hear. “I would prefer if you ran ahead so I could enjoy the view.” He smirked.

Dagen had hoped that that rather heavy pack would be left behind in the end. He had landed better than he had hoped but his legs were still jarred by the landing. He may have been next out after Marius and Sage but he figured the others would be passing him; Ben seemed to be more of a bull and could better handle a heavy pack than Dagen could.
- Dagen

Ben was the last to hopped down from the wall. He reached down for his pack and hustled up the path in a light jog.

Park

Magnus joined the younger officer in the jump down and gave him a friendly tap with his elbow “You had support going up” He said with a wide smile, grabbing his pack and slinging it across his back “Wall running is not one of my most fleshed out skills” He gave the man a chuckle and jogged on after the Captain.

After what seemed to be about a mile run… Marius lumbers at about a 10:30 minute pace, so if the weight of the pack didn’t cause a huge problem most runners would have no difficulty… if the pack wasn’t a problem.

The group reached an open span, that really wouldn’t exist in nature. This side of the cliff was separated from the other by about 20 meters. . There was a long drop but two long ‘bamboo like’ rods 2 feet apart that crossed the span. The rods themselves didn’t seem wide enough to stand and walk on one… and were too far apart to walk on both.

Marius

Magnus exhaled heavily then returned to his regular breathing, the running didn’t seem to leave him tired at all “Well you are very full of surprises Cap” He said eyeing the gap with a wide smile.

XO

“It’s actually a fairly common barrier on the marine obstacle course. I’m just adding the run and the packs for fun.”

Looking at the obstacle, Sage was sure she’d have the easiest time crossing it. She weighed the least and wasn’t burdened with a pack. “So is this a hands on one side and back of knees on the other and you sort of walk yourself across?” It wasn’t an easy task, but certainly doable. “If there aren’t any surprises, I’ll go first?”

—Sage

Unlike the other barrier, size and strength were more of a determent than an advantage.

Marius smiled at Sage’s response there were two common ways of completing the barrier that was one of them. “I’ve seen Marines do it that way.” Each techneque was a variation of the other. There was only a fixed number of ways a person’s limbs can be used to balance itself.

Marius

Dagen arrived winded. The mile wasn’t the problem; the pack was more than he had carried for a long time - if he had every carried that much to begin with. A biathlon didn’t have heavy packs. Rubbing away sweat that was threatening to run into his eyes he blinked at the bamboo poles. “I take it this is where we ditch the packs.” he commented. There was no way he could do a 60 foot crawl with an extra 90 pounds dragging him down.
- Dagen

Sage approached the place where the poles were attached to the cliff side. “Well, I’d lose the pack if I were you, but that’s easy for me to say when I don’t have one.” Without any more encouragement, she lowered herself to the ground and scooted to the edge. Very carefully, Sage maneuvered her legs (at the back of the knee) over one of the poles and curled her hands over the top of the other one so her body hung down from them in a “U” shape.

“See you on the other side!” She scuttled across the 20 meters without a problem and clamored up the other side. “Easy peasy, boys!.”

—Sage

Magnus shook his head “Losing your pack is a surefire way to die in the wild, without supplies you don’t last long eating unknown flora” He knew that Starfleet Officers were trained in survival but most were far too reliant on tricorders to tell them what was safe and what wasn’t.

XO

“I’ve lived in a colony in the forest all my life prior to Starfleet. We’ll survive.”

Park

Dagen gave Magnus a glance that was rather .. skeptical. To traverse something like that which he had not done since he was a teenager and that without a pack that weighed more than half his weight did not particularly reflect well on his chances of ‘survival’. He glanced down the gorge. “I hope the safeties are on or Reia will have your heads.”
- Dagen

Wondering why no one was attempting to join her on the other side, Sage called out. “If you insist on bringing those packs over, find a way to attach them to one of the poles either in front or behind where you’ll be. Then just push it or pull it—whichever motion applies. I’d pull it, myself.” She stood a few feet back from the edge and started stretching out her legs.

—Sage

Marius watched for a moment and reversed his pack so it was on his belly. He swung his right leg and right arm over the right pole and the did the opposite with his left. He looked like a very fat spider and then using his forearms and hands shimmed his way across. It wasn’t as fast as what Sage did but he didn’t lose his backpack.

Marius

It was pretty clear that this wasn’t the first time Marius has maneuvered in this manner.

IC:
Sage stopped stretching to watch Cal scoot across the ropes. With the weight of the large pack balanced on his abdomen, the muscles in his arms were getting a workout. She couldn’t help but smile at the sight, knowing they’d both need a shower after their workout—and they both loved showering together.

—Sage

Dagen had watched the Captain go over. That much weight would not make for a happy slug but it would be short lived. How long could it take after all to do this crawl? With some effort Dagen lugged the 90 pounds of unwieldy mass around to the front to copy the Captain. It was about as uncomfortable as it was on the back but he could adjust his posture to balance.

Waddling over to the ravine he dropped to all fours and was sure there was a gravity well that he was in with the tug that the pack had. He more rolled around than anything to grip the pole. At about the third of the way mark he was perspiring which made the pole slick and slowed his movement as Dagen began to be more careful. The pack felt like it was pushing the air out of his lungs. Just past half way Dagen felt he was getting in stride. While it felt torturous to his limbs and lungs and sweat stung his eyes he was getting the hang of this - provided that they had a bit of a rest at the end. A couple of motions more Dagen felt a sudden spike of pain in his abdomen, breaking his concentration, his arms slipping. In a moment he had gone from increasing confidence to falling leaving his mind trying to navigate the sudden way that things could change so quickly.
- Dagen

Marius chuckled at the group. “Come on…” He bellowed. “Let’s pick it up. Next obstacle only a few meters ahead.” Well it was true. The next obstacle was a few meters ahead, a few hundred meters, more specifically 1000 meters. This one was very straight forward. There were a series of low walls, each slightly different heights, between .75 and 1.25 meters. Marius took a run and bounded, lifted, or straight climbed over these things… it was 10 barriers in 100 meters. For some strange reason Marius did the barriers as if he were in a race, completing them all in about 35 seconds.

Marius

OOC:
I saw that Dagen fell, but I don’t know how holodecks work for that kind of thing. Did he only fall a couple of feet? or did he fall a long way and needs to be checked out by the doctor?

D…

OOC: Yeah, I don’t know precisely either, but figure that this kind of program might have something built in there for that. He likely will need a look see by the doc though. .. Gene
OOC The safeties are on… he’ll fall about 10 feet to a relatively soft landing

Luke

Dagen landed, the pack narrowly missing him, with a thud. He lay there blinking, the wind partially knocked out of him, staring up at the poles and wondering what had just happened. Running a hand through his wet unruly hair he pulled himself to his feet and looked up at the others on both sides of the canyon. “Zero points for style?” he asked?

“DAGEN,” Marius automatically went into marine drill sergeant mode. “You are now dead, costing the fleet of one Star-Fleet Chief Engineer, and the thousands of hours of training and tens and thousands of credits.”

Leaning in to pick up the pack he felt a small spike of pain that made him wince, dropping the pack back down, throwing a guilty look at the doc who likely noticed that.
- Dagen

Looking over the edge “break anything Dagen?” asked in a concerned tone.

Park

Dagen rubbed at a spot about his upper abdomen, not too far above where Thor rested. “Old war wound,” he said. “Hasn’t bothered me in years.” Indeed it had been many years. He had had issue with occasional internal bleeding but that had been resolved. Perhaps he had strained something. The initial injury had been severe and quite life threatening. The incident had included the death of his younger brother Rossel and had left him impaled. The image flashed across his eyes of the broken hull of the Enterprise E as it pulled away from the Scimitar. The collision had collapsed the section he had been in with his brother as they were evacuating people from there. He had been unscathed but Dagen had been impaled by a jagged spear from the tearing of the ship. Then the ship had pulled back, atmosphere decompressing and Rossel pulled out into space, him being held there by the metal the only thing saving him. The force fields snapping on were just moments too late. Dagen had been in physio for months recovering from that injury. That year flashed by his eyes in rapid fashion. Everything changed after that one moment.

He looked back at Park. “Might have overdone it.” He pulled himself to a standing position and looked for a way to climb up and out of this ravine. Noting a possible route he started the climb, moving carefully, reaching up his hand for a pull up when he got near.
- Dagen

Ben knelt down and extended his right arm to help Dagen out of the ravine. He pulled Dagen upwards and out of the ravine a couple of yards away from the precipice. “You’ll be okay Commander. Had something similar happened to me back on Earth ten years ago.”

Park

Marius felt guilty almost immediately, like a bad children’s baseball coach. “Computer rescue” He said. The ravine that turned into just a ‘gully when Dagen fell, formed a ramp on one side. There also was a rope… or Dagen to take Parks arm and lever themselves up.

Marius

OOC: Ooooo, I’m sorry guys! I broke my foot!! Then I broke my baby toe on the the other foot!! When it rains it pours. I’m also having a hard time getting Sage involved in anything. I feel like I’m just spinning my wheels…

IC:
Sage was perched on the edge of the ravine to jump down and assess Dagen and any injuries, when he stood. Seeing he was moving under his own steam and appeared to be alright, she regained her feet with the thought that she would give him a quick neuro exam and a visual once over as soon as he was back up on the same level as the rest of them.

“Babe, why don’t we change it up and have a cookout instead of this physical test?” Her words were soft enough only Cal would hear her. She didn’t want anyone to think she was being disrespectful to the CO by calling him her pet name for him.

—Sage

Calvin looked over at her for a moment. He tilted his head. Perhaps a marine level of engagement was more than he could expect. “Over the next clearing is a break area.” Marius started. He couldn’t go straight to picnic. He felt it didn’t sound like something he would do. He tapped his badge and asked the stewards to bring in some beer and sandwiches to be placed in the next area.

Marius

Sage nodded. She understood her husband more than anyone else and knew his way would be better. “Good call.” She said as she made her way over to Dagen. “That was unexpected. Do you feel alright?” She reached up and felt the back of the engineer’s head where it had made contact with the ground/floor. “Is any of this tender?” There was a small goose egg forming at the lower edge of the occipital bone, but no bleeding.

Dagen had no qualms of medical checks. He had had them so regularly when he was growing up that they had become almost a part of his life. He shook his head. “Head is fine. Sure I had a good thump there but at least the pack didn’t land on me.” He winced at the touch of the goose egg but that was mild.

She stepped around to the front of him and held up her hand. “Without moving your head, follow my finger.” It was a quick neuro exam, but she was satisfied there was no immediate danger. “I think you’ll be fine, probably have a headache in a little while though. I want you to stop by medical for a quick scan this afternoon, okay?”

—Sage

His eyes followed the finger fine, and when that was over Dagen touched around the upper abdomen area. “It was more here. I don’t think anything torn but reminded me that I’m not immortal.” He nodded affirmatively about the stop by. “My old injury. It took a long time to heal, but that was years ago now.”
- Dagen

Marius pursed his lips over her shoulder… The safeties should have clicked on before serious injuries, but he had seen people break arms and legs on the ‘safe’ setting. It show you just how fragile the human body could be. You could impale a person with 5 pounds of force…

Marius

“You should work out more… it might not make you immortal, but it tends to make you less mortal.”

Marius

Ben had dropped the pack off and pulled out a cool canteen full of filtered water and offered it to Dagen. “Here you go Dagen.”
