“You wanna go fly a kite with me?” she asked slipping the oversized key back into the bodice of her sky blue dress. Perhaps it would come in handy later.

  • Reia

“Let’s,” he said, watching the key disappear. Clearing his throat he looked at the assembly. “Follow me. Now who has flown a kite before?” Bat, waved his free hand, the other helping to stuff down the cupcake. “Okay, anyone else?”
Dagen

“I grasp the… ah… aerodynamics.. of the concept, rrrrnth.” A long blink toward Reia and an animated tremor or felid whiskers shows delight to the offer, with attention then toward Dagen as he leads the way to kite flying. The cane is set back to the ground for the sake of doing that little hobble that this character evidently has. Despite there being no signs of the others playing along with the settle, having at least some ‘backstory’ to go with this outfit is of enough importance to keep with the proper gait.

Of course, gentlemen of the 18th century didn’t have spotted tails that hike up their pettycoats, when curled upward in enjoyment, but she can only have so much authenticity without resorting to full-character alteration, and that seemed inappropriated.

Bat tipped his bowler hat towards the others and followed along. It seemed that whether it was period costume or uniform he filled it all too well. Angel, more serene in her motions shuffled through the grass. If she was aware that her dress was less than Vulcan she ignored it. She didn’t appear to have grasped the idea of the umbrella and awkwardly shifted it about, occasionally looking to the sky as though anticipating rain and thus showing the functionality of the beast. Perhaps in a poke at convention it could be seen on occasion that her feet were bare.

Reia couldn’t help herself. She ran the last few steps to the kite racks and started to look through, uncertain of exactly what would strike her fancy.

The simple cross pieces seemed to catch Reia’s eye the most. They seemed elegant and more aerodynamic. She shifted several until she found one that seemed to be of an abstract butterfly with a tail of long purple and gold ribbons.

“Oh I think I like this one.”

  • Reia

As soon as Reia picked up that kite she would note a second chest there; whether it was something anticipated or cleverly programmed was another story. Bat immediately went to one that was more oval and a deep blue purple color. The kite and he looked .. similar. “Logically art imitates life in this case,” Angel said with a slight rise of a brow. At the same time a slight but persistent breeze came up.

As though on cue of some sort a child and father, evidently part of the program, plucked up a kite, whereupon the child, with his hand not too far from the string holding the kite, began to run, releasing the string bit by bit. It wobbled, whirled about, nearly hit the ground, but did take to flight, laughter following. The father, however, more skilled, stood with his back to the wind, held the kite aloft and released it. The wind caught it and it rose and, with skilled motions of his hand let the string out to let it fly higher, pulling on it for altitude, then repeating until it was high in the sky.

Reia watched the father and son for a few seconds. She knew that the father was doing it the right way but the little boy seemed to be having such fun. Reia knew she owuld end up running through the grass like him before the day was over.

Smiling, she shifted the kit to one hand and picked up the small chest with the other. She turned it this way and that like she had the other one before taking the key from her bodice and carefully unlocking it.

Inside, there was a delicate shimmering bottle. She picked it up and held it so that it caught the sunlight.

“Wow! I half expect a genie to come out of this if I rub it.” she said in admiration of the workmanship.

“Knowing the Commander, perhaps one may yet,” Angel commented. She was looking at a dusty brown kite with green accents. Bat managed to get himself tangled up in the string, requiring some help from Angel. Meanwhile there was a clang from a short distance away as Sebastian and Deeg took up the horseshoes.

On careful examination, Reia realized it was a bottle of perfume. Opening it carefully, she sniffed and the delicate scent of vanilla with a floral undertone caught the breeze.

“That scent is very agreeable,” Angel commented. “I have detected it in your quarters as well. Candles I believe?”

“My dear husband is a very bad man. This is one of my favorite scents.” she said to those around her before applying it to her neck, behind her ears, and to her wrists.

Bat stopped wrestling with the kite to breathe in deeply. “Very nice. I should get some of that,” he said before taking off at a run, looking not unlike a large rambling grape with the kite bobbing behind him. It bounced on the grass twice before catching some wind and going aloft - just before tripping and going down. He slid on the slick grass and turned about. A wide, boyish blue smile crossed his lips as he saw the kite aloft, swaying in the breeze, he himself again tangled in the string but oblivious as he watched it. “I did it!” he called over.

“The chances of him doing that again are 3,392 to 1,” Angel commented, brow raised.

Bat and Angel

Kesh passively observed the holocharacter interactions and the reactions by the other crewmembers. She had much to learn of them, as there was clearly symbolism and meaning to what was happening that was beyond her understanding. But that’s okay, as she had only just joined this ship such a short time before. It would be some time before she could confidently say she knew them ‘well’.

A long, slow breath flowed from Kesh’s nostrils then as her eyes unfocused a moment, then turned toward the kites and stared. This was her new home. Would it remain that for a long time, or did the universe have other plans for her? It felt good and it felt safe, so hopefully it would linger long enough to feel that warmth of familiarity like she had on the Athene.

For now, spotted fingers delicately pluck up one of the kites to spend a moment examining it, ensuring she understood the way it functioned before attempting to get it airborn.
