Vanessa walked into sickbay and glanced around. This moment was one of those pivotal moments you always saw in Holovids. Vanessa started her post-education taking up the family tradition of nursing. She liked it but that was until she met a nurse named Chloe Harland and her husband. Nathan Harland was head of psychiatric services and always down in the ER where he did double duty between counseling and neurosurgery. Her talks with Nathan pushed her to change her major to psychology from nursing when she left her community college. At this moment however, it just felt weird to think this could have been her home on the Genesis instead of the counseling suites.

Moving to the desk, she waited for someone to help her with her check-in.

Vanessa Slade

T’Lora had, as usual, been hanging around in sickbay, which was one of the best things about being the CMO. No one told you to stop loitering or that you needed to do something outside of work. Unfortunately, this was the one person who might. “Hello Counselor. How may I help you?” Alas, her fun seemed it would soon come to an end.

“Yes,” she said happily with a big smile taking the duffle bag off her shoulder and setting it next to the suitcase with the two duffle bags stacked on top. “Vanessa…Vanessa Slade.” Extending her hand across the desk she greeted the woman on the other side. While the woman was wearing the uniform of the counseling division it was a toss-up on whether she was was coming or going.

T’Lora blinked slowly. “I am T’Lora, the CMO. It’s nice to meet you.” Vanessa was… not what she had expected for a counselor. She extended her gloved hand to shake regardless. “I hope you didn’t have trouble finding Sickbay?” She glanced curiously at the bags.

“So glad to meet you,” Vanessa shook her hand looking around the room. It was smaller than she was used to for a hospital but far larger than the clinic down the street from where she worked and lived prior.

“Nope just got off the shuttle and figured I might as well make my rounds before settling in. You never feel like gettin’ back up when you sit down.” Noticing the woman looked at her stuff, Vanessa let out a small chuckle and pushed a chunk of hair out of her face and behind her ear. The sound of guitar strings and then drums began to echo through sickbay. It was not loud but loud enough to be noticed. Later it would become common knowledge that when the song Blue Collar Man by the band Saturn Styxx was heard it was Vanessa’s brother David comming her. “One second excuse me,” Vanessa fumbled with her personal communicator holding up a finger.

A voice with a thick accent immediately began talking on the other end. “Ness why ain’t you called ma? Did you break down? Wheeuh ah you? Give me youh location and I will send someone? Bubba is out in youh neck of the woods. Youh’re out by the Denebe system right?”

“Yah,” Vanessa grimaced slightly. If her family had any idea where she was exactly, they would flip out. It was easier to let them think she was a lot close to home. “Don’t any of youhs read the family cawmm channel? No, I did not break down. I’m in sickbay and before you go all nutty I’m fine. It’s a check-in. Call Ma and tell hah I will get back to hah tonight. Gawtta go. Bye.” Vanessa’s Boston accent showed but only when she was talking to her brother. Stuffing the comm in her pocket, after she switched it off, she looked at the doctor. “Brothers,” she sighed. “I know they are just worried I got here okay but it’s not like I took Lucky Lonnie’s Low Far Shuttle excursions. Anyway,” she waved off her delve into her family insanity. “Do you have time for a check in or should I come back later?”

T’Lora took a moment too long to reply without showing she was baffled by the sudden interruption. “I have time. Please, pick a biobed. I assume you have more than one brother?”

“Nine to be exact,” Vanessa laughed moving to a bed and taking a seat. “Dalton, David, Daniel, Duncan, Dane, Dallas, Dylan, Dexter, and Dennis,” she rattled off their names in a well-rehearsed tone. “My dad always joked things were cheaper by the dozen. That was until my brothers hit puberty and the only thing that outpaced their appetites was their growth spurts. I’m not sure if we went through more potatoes or shoes as teenagers.” Vanessa’s laugh was full and made her whole body shake.

“Very Vulcan of your family,” T’Lora remarked blithely. “I believe every Vulcan man spends his childhood trying to think of an S name for his future son.” Nonetheless, amusement played across her face.

“I have the distinct honor of being their only sister, the youngest, and the only one in my family that has proven the world doesn’t end at the Massachusetts state line. Do you have a large family she asked?”

Vanessa Slade CNS

“I’m afraid it’s only me and every village boy my father bullied into being my friend.” She grinned, thinking of her various ‘cousins’. “They were rather the same as your brothers.”
-T’Lora, CMO

“So your dating life was non-existent like mine as a teenager,” Vanessa laughed. “I swear between all my brothers they knew every guy my age and no one wants to be the guy that is dating your friends sister. Where did you grow up?” Vanessa liked the CMO. She had a sense of humor and anyone that could find a laugh in everyday life was someone Vanessa wanted to be around.

“A small village on the Arabian Peninsula, if you can believe it.” T’Lora grinned. “The closest my father could find to Vulcan on Earth.”
-T’Lora, CMO

“That is so exotic,” Vanessa sounded genuinely impressed. “It is crazy. I have been in Starfleet for almost ten years total but I have only been off earth twice. Once for my cadet cruise and once for a clinical rotation before this. On Earth, it wasn’t any better. As I have said before the world ended at the Massachusetts state line.” Her filled the room at the irony of her life. “What was the Arabian Peninsula like?”

Vanessa Slade CNS

“Hot.” T’Lora remarked dryly before breaking into a smile. “The culture is nice. There are more boundaries than a lot of human settlements have nowadays, and there’s an expectation of respect towards everyone’s autonomy. Women are quite highly regarded as well, which didn’t hurt when I wanted to pick what we were doing.” She shrugged. “That said, I’ve never been to Massachusetts.”
-T’Lora

“Cold,” Vanessa let out a laugh. “The winters are brutal even with all the climate controls. You can keep the roads and sidewalks ice free for the most part but that doesn’t stop the snow. I will take you home to visit one day if you would like. Just don’t expect it to be quiet or relaxing. There are no less then twenty people living in the house at any given time. It is kinda like being back in the academy dorms which is probably why I slept like a baby in San Fran.”

Vanessa Slade CNS

“Fascinating,” T’Lora murmured. “I’ve always loved learning about peoples background and how it affects them.”
