“Well, I have voracious appetites for my marriage and my job it seems. I certainly don’t steal all of your meat. You need to keep up with me and my higher metabolism sweetheart so maybe you should order a rack of ribs to go.”

“It has taught me to be quicker at eating,” he said, “and savor the things that I can.” A rack of ribs? Those things were deadly, but then she would be the one getting all greasy.

She turned back to her father in law and gave him a mischievous look.

“Well between amazing things I do for the Federation that I really can’t tell you about, I just spend time among the crew. There is a lot of time between missions. I basically spend it studying where we’ve been and where we’ll be. It also helps being the comms officer.” she explained.

  • Reia, CIO/Comms

“Oh, Comms,” he said. “Now you’ve hit on something. Have you ever done ham radio? The humans call it that. I’m not sure where it came from and how using a radio related to a form of food. Trill call it CCat .. short for Chatter Chatting.”
Dagen’s mother relaxed and nibbled. “Dear, we may be ordering supper here,” she said with a smile.
“I’ve done that. Does the Fleet have that? Sounds like something you’d like, you know, even listening in, one can learn a lot about others. I have a call sign and everything for the local CCat chapters. It’s organized you know into local clubs and chapters they like to call it to sound more than it is. “We are called the Twilight Whisperers. I’m the Grey Warbler.” Dagen couldn’t hold a straight face but his dad sounded rather proud of that.

Reia picked up and held her coffee cup to her lips for what seemed an unusually long time before actually taking a drink. Better to hide one’s laughter.

The thought of a gray warbler brought to mind a fat noisy bird such as one might find on an American holiday table in centuries gone by.

“That does sound very interesting actually. Quite similar to things we’ve had on Earth for centuries.”

“I have read up on that history. It is fascinating. Did you know the Klingons never adopted such a thing, and the Romulans quickly adapted it to a kind of surveillance method, much like Earth’s early internet, especially things like Handbook.”
“That’s Footbook dear.”
“Of course, you’re right. Strange names these. As I was saying, the Andorians never adopted such things as it was too easy for them to speak an offense, or words to be taken as one when not face to face. And the Ferengi used something like that to hone their skills in bartering and quizzing on their Rules of Acquisition.”

Leaning forward she made certain to catch Dagen’s father’s eye.

“And you’re right, you can learn a lot about a person, or race, just by listening.” she gave a conspiratorial wink before turning back to her shrimp.

  • Reia

He picked up one of the last slices of bacon. “You are a tease.”
Dagen squeezed Reia’s leg and nodded toward his dad.

The meal, virtually done, brought a question from Dagen’s mother. “Dear, we cannot possibly ask them about this, but you have to take us around for some shopping and to walk off this splendid lunch.”
Dagen & family …

Reia thought Dagen’s mother had a glorious idea. She thought much better on her feet in the first place whether she was slinking out of the shadows or taking her in laws shopping, movement had always been her friend.

“I think that’s a great idea. Burn some calories.”

“Oh pshua, calories are overstated. Nothing that a good cardio session doesn’t take care of.” She waved off the feeling of ‘needing’ the exercise but leaned in to her husband. “We may need to get some in later, dear, after walking off this food and getting some good shopping in.”

Leaning forward she, and her cleavage, caught Dagen’s father’s eye.

Dagen’s father’s eyes widened momentarily. “Absolutely, love,” he said. “Absolutely.”

“Besides, if I’m going to tell a good story, I usually like to keep the blood pumping. It’s so great for your memory don’t you think?”

“As in remembering what to shop for?” She dabbed at her lips with the napkin before rising. Dagen had already tapped along the display on the table to pay, pretty much without looking.

Smiling, she glanced around for the waiter.

  • Reia

“All taken care of,” Dagen said, sliding his hand along her leg to curl to her waist to pull her in for a side hug. “All we need do is head off. I presume dad and I are ready to be beasts of burden.”
