Menn glared at Beth but she ignored him. Menn then said, “How do you know their intentions? My continent would definitely analyze the situation before we act. Would diplomacy work? How much devastation would there be if we resisted? Would our whole race be wiped out if we resisted? We basically would rather not be dominated, but to see our people decimated would be quite another matter.”

GM

“True, which is why we opened communication and asked their intentions were and what they meant by domination. They threatened us, demanded we leave, and when we stated we wanted to know what right they had to ‘do miniate’ your world they fired on us. We have our ship board tapes of the encounter which I have no problem of sharing with you.”

Tom shook his head. Telling someone something that could harm them may be on it’s way made any further inroads of diplomacy almost impossible as the subjects turn most, if not all, of their focus on dealing with the incoming threat. Tom was pretty sure the Messi would eventually ask for help from the Genesis.

  • Tom, IntSec

Ben thought it best to let the Captain handle Mr. Menn’s questions. What can you say to a new culture that just found out that their under subjugation for years without even knowing it.

Park

“Despite the fact that we were fired on we maneuvered to keep them away from your planet and asked them to respect a .5 light year no conflict zone. However, I have no interest in you just taking our word for it. We would be more than happy to help you discuss this issue directly with the Lesscoo and help in establishing diplomatic relations.”

“The Lessco technology is more advanced than yours, It is likely they could militarily defeat you. However, their military was unable to defeat our single ship. Hence why we are here talking to you, and they are not here shooting you.”

“We in the Federation have a number of rules about not interfering with the internal politics and development of a planet. So all your decisions will be your own. Our rules are more flexible about allowing foreign powers from subjugating other worlds. However that is not for us to just pronounce what is right or wrong for you, you as a people have to decide if you want our help and then that would have to be weighed by our counsel. We can not just decide for you that is not how we do things.”

A process that would be immediately complicated by the state of Cold War between the three continents on the planet, Thomas thought. Again, though, that would be an issue for the Diplomatic Corps.

“I know its a lot to process, and you have some time. As long as our ship is in orbit, I doubt the Lessco will try anything.”

COS

Reia had been following the conversation closely. She respected the Captain even though he had never sought her council and they didn’t have what one might call an off duty friendship. His actions sent her mind on a bit of a roller coaster. In the end, she simply thought that there were too many ‘however’s in his speech.

  • Reia, CIO/Comms

Menn looked grave, “This is a threat on a planetary scale. I, unfortunately, do not have the authority to make decisions on that level. If you can provide us evidence that this is a real threat, and what you can offer in terms of aid,” said Menn, “I can bring this up to the leaders of the planet and then decisions can be made.”

GM

=^=Marius to Genesis, please put the log and the video of our encounter and discussion with the Lessco on a compatable video data stick for the Messi. When ready beam to my location.=^=

“I will freely give you whatever I have. We also have no issue with transporting any delegation you have to a Lessco ship or planet. Or host it on the Genesis if you’d like. I would be somewhat cautious were I you. In fact, I want you to be very cautious of what anyone, including us. For the Federation those who make judicious decisions, are the best friends.”

He turned to his crew, “We are happy to go where-ever you suggest.”

Marius CO

“Please excuse me,” said Menn. He walked away and Beth spoke in his absence.

“Where exactly do you come from?” her eyes sparkling. “If you come here, we can get to see some telescope pictures we have taken of space.” She led them to a nearby console which had a screen that was about a metre in diagonal. She brought up a picture of the night sky. “Could you tell me whereabouts are you from?”

GM

Marius smiled warmly, an expression the crew saw rarely. In fact so rarely it almost seemed perverse. “I come from Earth, but the Federation is hundreds of planets. So my crew and our people are from all over. ” He looked off in the sky. “With your naked eye you can’t see Earth.” He pointed roughly deeper into the Alpha Quadrant. “But I would say… my homeworld is about there.”

Reia realized this had gone from first contact diplomatic mission to a ‘Let’s be the good guys and solve this problem.’ mission. That was fine by her, she decided to stay close to Marius just in case.

  • Reia, CIO/Comms

Thomas’ frown grew deeper. He’d asked several times to speak with the leaders of the other continents, only for Menn to brush him off, but now he was saying it was as easy as making a couple of calls…

COS

“The situation with the Lesscoo is serious indeed,” said Beth said, turning solemn. “You probably know, from your observations of our planet, that our planet is not a united one. There is an uneasy peace … if you call what we have real peace … among us. If one becomes a turncoat and negotiates with the Lesscoo to gain some favour, our planet is doomed.”

GM

“That unfortunately will be a problem. The Federation does not negotiate with one nation on a divided planet. We do not interfere with the internal politics of our friends and neighbors. ” He paused, “That being said that doesn’t mean we won’t defend your world from outside forces. Particularly if all nations ask for that help… even if that is the only thing they agree on.”

Marius

“Or try to help all of you become a unified voice,” Vanessa added. At times Calvin and some of the other officers were so by the book Vanessa felt they missed the spirit of the rules. Nothing in the rules said one could not help a group come to a consensus. The rules only said could not make them come to that consensus under duress or so that the people were manipulated to outwardly favored the Federation in the end. “How about we get everyone together and talk about this as a group? Nothing brings people to the table faster than extinction or invasion.”

Vanessa Slade CNS

“Without siding with one or the other.” What the counselor said was mostly true, but a unifed planet would be much easier of Marius to bend the rule of first contact for/

“One or the other, or the other,” Thomas muttered, since there were three sides to this planet, and as with most divided pre-warp planets, the divisions were probably as trivial as to which side of the toast they preferred to butter.

Tom was looking casually at their surroundings. He felt that this had spiraled quickly out of control and wondered how they could spin this as no official requests, or anything else, was made through channels. It was a big jump from “Welcome to the great big universe.” to “Now for the news of your impending cultural demise.”. In the end, it was between the Captain and the Intel officer as this was outside of Tom’s jurisdiction.

Ben thought it best to let his superiors handle the diplomacy. His main concern was the safety of the Away Team.

Park

“You said there is an uneasy peace between you and the other two independent nations on this world. Would it be possible for you to set up a diplomatic meeting between us and them? If the three of us sit down it will not appear that we are helping just you.” Fixing a neutral gaze on Beth, Calvin continued. “The Federation is not going to side with one party over another. While I can committ to protecting this planet, I think from this point forward we should be speaking with all parties involved for complete transparency.”

“The meeting should be held on the Genesis,” Vanessa added, avoiding looking at the Captain. This change of venue was probably something she should have discussed prior to rolling out the welcome mat to their home but it just made sense to her. Already hip-deep in the situation, as her grandma said, all Vanessa could do was trudge forward and hope the Captain was at the end of the swamp she jumped into with a towel instead of a stick to push her back into it.

Turning to look at the Captain, Vanessa nodded as if he was already in agreement with the plan she was now going to sell to two people: Her boss and the people they met on the planet. “This would afford us neutral ground so it does not appear one of the three groups we are meeting has an advantage. It would also allow us to show the inhabitants of this world what the Federation is.”

Vanessa Slade CNS

Calvin blinked at this counselor placidly. It wasn’t a bad idea but a Lieutenant shouldn’t be offering his ship without even a nod from him. He cast a side glance at his counselor but waited to see if any of this other senior officers had a question, comment or remark about what she was suggesting. With the Lesscoo about to subjugate the populace of the planet, Calvin did have a but of wiggle room with the Prime Directive but it was not a lot.

Marius CO

Reia straightened up and looked at the Captain.

“I agree with the counselor sir. Having these types of meetings on the Genesis makes sense for all parties concerned.” she stated clearly.

Reia made certain to hold the Captain’s gaze and to leave out the fact that, from an intel perspective, this was definitely the way to go. If they were about to get three factions of a planet, with cool relations, together, controlling the situation would eminently work better where the away team had the advantage.

  • Reia, CIO/Comms

“If we’re going to use the Genesis as ‘neutral ground’ I suggest limiting access to the conference room only. I recommend using transporters but, if the shuttle is to be utilized for transport back and forth then only the corridors necessary between the shuttle bay and conference room should be allowed.” Tom commented.

  • Tom, IntSec

“I would caution against using transporters with a newly-spacefaring race,” Thomas chimed in. “Especially since, technically, only a third of them are warp-capable, and the other two presumably don’t even know about what the third just accomplished. It’ll be stretching the definition of “warp-capable species” just to get the other two representatives on board, exposing them to transporter tech might break it.”

COS

“The Vulcans made first contact with humans when only the United States, one of 300 nations had warp drive, I’d say one in three is more than sufficient.” Marius had also beamed down right in front of them. Unless they thought he was a magician, there was little doubt they knew they had a teleportation system of some sort.

Well why don’t we just cuff them and let Bruno and Guido bag their heads and use the caddy to get them to the ship, Vanessa thought listening to the group already making plans. She had only had the 101 security classes required of all academy cadets so to her this felt like overkill. “Or,” she held up a finger, “we can just pop into their shuttles and let them take us to a low planetary orbit where the Genny can intersect with them and take them on board. You do have ships that can reach orbit right,” Vanessa asked Beth and Menn waiting for them to respond.

Vanessa Slade CNS

Reia angirly wondered why anybody involved with security was blabbering parts of this conversation in front of their hosts. She thought it was incredibly rude but, as far as Beth and Menn knew, Reia was merely a communications officer and she would act the part.

  • Reia, CIO/Comms

“Children, let’s not turn this into Thanksgiving dinner at the in-laws.” Several words that would be very difficult to ascertain without some sort of human knowledge.

Marius

“Well then let’s not start assigning those without dates regardless of age to the children’s table,” Vanessa smiled sweetly. “Thanksgiving is a human holiday,” she looked at Beth and Menn, “where families sit around a huge meal and share feelings of warmth and thanks for the bounty of the year and celebrate family and relationships. The In-laws are the most revered guests,” she hid her smirk remarkably well. “So should we do the beam us up Scotty thing or just stand around here looking like a Cadet review,” she let her glance drift to Calvin.

Vanessa Slade CNS

Said no one ever, Calvin thought as he heard Vanessa’s comment about In-laws being the most revered guests at a dinner. While his ex-In-laws never were difficult, they were never a walk in the park either.

Tapping his badge, he called up the the Genesis. =/=Commander=/= he paused before giving his order. =/= Lock on my coordinates and beam up the away team along with our two guests. Also prepare to hail the other two nations and the main conference area for possible first contact meeting. Marius out.=/=

Marius

As Ben was transported back to the Genesis, he started feeling ill as soon as he stepped off sick bay?Looking to Calvin “Captain permission to be dismissed to sickbay?”

Park

Reia glanced at ben and wondered if it was something they had eaten.
