Reia and Headless
===============
The horse moved at a speed that felt almost dizzying. Up hills and down it sprinted towards the large castle up in the distance. It stopped however at the carriage house and pulled Reia off by her wings from the horse, dragging her to the heavy wooden door.

Vanessa Slade

This whole situation had come as quite a surprise to Reia. Nothing aobut this evening had been preplanned except the costume she was wearing.

“Hey, what the hell do you think you’re doing? Do you know how long it took me to get these bloody wings right?” she asked while being dragged, kicking and screaming, from the horse and into the cottage, “Oy, Headless, what the hell? As soon as I figure out who you are, I’m going to tear your life apart.” she said fighting him all the way.

The figure did not seem to care as he drug Reia by the back of her shirt, mashing the wings in his fist. His steps were steady and purposeful as he approached the door.

Reia was convinced that this was some real person playing along with the Counselor because, at the moment, this seemed too good to be part of the program.

  • Reia

As he pushed the heavy oak door open, he swung Reia around and tossed her through the doorway before closing the door behind him. The clunk of the wood against the frame sounded much like she was being tossed into a dungeon instead of a cottage.

The room was dark until Reia moved. Then it suddenly lit up with candles coming to life as if all lit at once. The room had stone walls and rustic, thick oak furniture. A fire wooshed into existence in the small fireplace. The room smelled like a root cellar with potatoes, fruits, vegetables and herbs hanging in corners or piled high in boxes or shelves.

“Come sit with me,” an elderly female voice suddenly broke through the silence.

Woman in black

Reia was startled by the woman’s request. She had been taking an inventory of her bumps and bruises when the woman first spoke.

“Right. Because I’m sure you’ve got a needle and thread in this lovely home.” she said making her way to sit next to the woman because, wasn’t one supposed to?

  • Reia

Her hunched position prevent Reia from getting a good look at the woman before she became closer. Once she was sitting next to her, the wild hair streaked with strands of white made the woman’s overall hair appear a dull gray. The woman was dressed in all black. Her dress had a high collar and covered everything on the woman’s body except for her hands and head. A hat with a black mesh veil obscured the woman’s facial features. “It has been far too long since I have had company. It will be nice to dine on you later if your friends can not find you in time. Could you stir my soup,” the craggy voice asked still looking forward and not at Reia.

Old Lady in Black

Reia took a good look at the thing she was seated next to.

“Not until you’ve put me in it. I don’t know who you think I am but I wouldn’t taste good, even to you. Maybe if you were a warlock and not some dried up wannabe witch.” she said deciding, in that moment, to be feisty.

  • Reia

In one fluid moment, the being lunged at Reia and began to push her toward the back wall. It was only now that Reia got a good look at the woman. The black dress and gray hair framed a weathered and worn visage with coal-black eyes and icy skin. The stench of her breath held the scent of death and decay. It wafted over Reia as the woman laughed manically closing her bony hands on Reia’s wrists. The sound of the woman’s laughter echoed in the room like ice striking a windowpane. It seemed to reverberate and fill the room like a frozen breeze engulfing the two. Leaning in close, she licked Reia’s cheek as if testing Reia’s claim about taste. The woman’s mouth smacked as if savoring the taste. The wet maw, inches from Reia’s face as she tried to push the woman back, made smacking sounds as if already feasting.

Witch in Cabin

It was about that moment that Reia wondered how high the safeties on the holodeck had been set or if, for some reason, they were off entirely.

As she was being pushed back against the wall Reia quickly brought her right knee up shooting it forward towards the witch’s gut.

“Invest in breath mints bitch!”

  • Reia

The woman doubled over and let out an ear-piercing screech that not only sounded but felt like fingernails running down the chalkboard. The bony fingers pawed at Reia’s clothes trying to grab onto her as the old woman recovered from the blow. Her strength did not match her elderly visage. “You can’t leave. You are mine. He brought you to me.”

Witch

Reia began slapping at the woman’s hands. There was no way this crone creation was going to tear at a costume she had spent three weeks creating.

“You’re gonna have to find your protein somewhere else. I think I’ll be leaving now.” she said trying to quickly move to the door.

  • Reia

“You can’t leave. You can never leave. Death is the only way out. Yield to the maker so that he may set your soul free.” The crone’s voice sounded like a prophecy instead of a threat. Turning to watch Reia’s fleeing form she let out a cackle. “All hail the guilded ones. They control your fate.” A bolt of lightning streaked across the sky followed by a blinding flash the lit the dark outside up like day light for a split second. The crone stood in the room letting the shadows slowly appear to be engulfing her.

Witch

Reia had made it to the top of the stairs before the large clap of thunder and brighter than usual lightning flash disoriented her. She made it a few steps before tripping over her tattered wings and falling to her knees, then forward onto her hands.

“What the hell! COmputer, end program now!” she screamed.

=/\=Progran unable to be terminated. Try again later=/\= The AI voice responded in its feminine tone to Reia’s question.

The CE’s wife had simply had enough of this foolishness. If she couldn’t end this ridiculous program, her husband better.

  • Reia

The booming of the thunder was felt as much as it was heard. The door flew open and the looming figure of the headless horseman appeared. His silhouette was outlined in an inky black shadow. “Take her..take her to the castle,” the old crone sounded almost gleeful in her tone. A hand the size of a dinner plate closed on the back of her costume hoisting her to her feet.

The Crone

Reia decided not to fight that moment so she went ragdoll in his grasp. Let him take her to the castle.
