“Tater tots with spicy ketchup and sweet peach tea.”

“Huh didn’t see you as the tater tot type,” Vanessa looked at the man skeptically for a second. He was built too athletic to indulge probably often or he worked out enough that he could eat anything he wanted. “Okay, so tonight it has been me peppering you with questions. So hit me,” she brushed off her hands. “What had you always wanted to know about Vanessa Slade and were afraid to ask.”

Tom sat silent for a moment. He’d never had the opportunity to have this questions asked of him. After all, he knew dossiers were never complete and that there were plenty of things that never made it to ‘official’ records.

“I’m out of practice in socializing. I’m not really sure what to ask.” he said sheepishly.

Tom looked thoughtful for a bit.

“What else do you like to do in your leisure time besides movies?”

  • Tom

“Usually sleep,” he let out a laugh. “I tend to do a lot of OTB therapy.” Taking a sip of coffee she then replied, “out of the box so I spend hours doing all sorts of activities. Tends to keep me active so when I come home or stop moving I fall asleep. It is like I have self induced narcolepsy. When I am not sleeping I am a barfly in the lounge.”

“I hope you don’t get mad that I disappeared on you after the first ten minutes of our time together and/or get unnerved after watching the recording, redacted of course to omit any classified materials.” Tom said smiling warmly at Vanessa.

  • Tom

“What could possibly be redacted about helping out two kids in a jam and using public resources to do it,” she let out a laugh. “Can I be honest,” Vanessa looked at Tom already gearing up to tell him whether he wanted it or not. “Why do you always want to bring up that no one will remember you?”

Tom sat back and sighed. There was a fleeting moment of what might have been exasperation but it vanished before clear identification of the emotion could be made.

“I wasn’t talking about that. I was talking about tonight.” Tom said with a frown, “And my mutation happens to be a major ruling factor in my life. My social skills are lacking, I know this, and if I’m being myself, which is what you seem to want, it’s a real issue. If you want me to play a role, I can. I can talk to you like any other crewman and just let every interaction be the first for you. You seem to want to go beyond that though. If I’m mistaken, please correct me now. I can always administer an amnestic if necessary.”

  • Tom

“Take a deep breath and relax. I guess I got confused on why you thought I could be mad at something I don’t remember or misunderstood what you said. I mean yes we women are known for getting mad at you men for things you don’t have a clue about but that is just the Venus Mars thing and is never going to change. You haven’t snuck out yet and we have passed the three-hour mark so I will at least remember you like peach water,” she shrugged. “It’s baby steps. We need to flood the first 30 minutes I see you on shifts with all the important things about you…such as you like spicy tater tots.”

Vanessa Slade CNS

“You sound like you’re planning to try to spend at least three and a half hours with me every time we meet as we don’t really have shifts together so to speak.” Tom said with a bit of a giggle, “What I meant was that, other people who have tried this have gotten irritated, to say the least, with me just getting up and walking out. That’s the defense against discord that their mind usually creates.”

  • Tom

“Well unless we are in some crazy hostage situation where we are tied to a chair with dank concrete walls and that single light source flickering above our heads where you literally can’t get away, the choice is always yours about whether you stay or not. Oh and for the record,” she held up her finger, “I absolutely expect you to use those mad intelligence skills to find a way to get us out before three hours and totally have me forget the experience.” She let out a laugh and took a sip of her drink.

“Now aside from the whole kidnapped and waiting for our torturer’s scenario, there are plenty of things you can do on your end to spend three hours with people like spend your free time on your day off in the game room, host a four-hour party in the holodeck, attend one of my fabulous events that tend to make people come to therapy after,” she listed off possibilities. “What are you thinking?”

Vanessa Slade CNS

“I’m thinking I can try this experiment with you.” Tom said looking thoughtful, “It might be nice to have someone recognizing me again that’s not from a recording or transcript.”

  • Tom

“I am in it to win it if you are,” Vanessa let out a full laugh. Looking at Tom she raised and eyebrow with a smirk. “You know you are totally going to be back here next month saying ‘God I wish I had stayed in my life of anonymity.’ So what party are you gonna plan to invite the crew too? You have a huge standard to live up to. My last two involved no one coming and being trapped on the holodeck in a Halloween holo for hours being chased by zombies.”

Tom looked at Vanessa and shook his head.

“No, I’m not planning a party. This experiment is going to be a one on one. Just you and I. I actually enjoy my anonymity most of the time, I just make exceptions when I want to pursue something more than a polite nod or suspicious stare in passing.”

  • Tom

“This is about getting out of anonymity,” she laughed, “but I get it. You are looking for baby steps. So what sounds fun to you?” Vanessa was usually up for anything the crew wanted to do. She didn’t have to be good at anything to help someone on their journey. She just needed to invest her time and effort.
