It was a very nervous Ben Wilkinson who stood outside the door of the Security Office. This was his first command and he had yet to meet Lt. McGregor, who would be his boss in this new assignment. Many questions ran across his mind as he stood there. “Would he and the Lt. get along ?, Would he do well in his job ?, What would the Captain be like ?” and many others. Finally, swallowing and smoothing out the imaginary wrinkles in his uniform, he hit the chime and as the door slid open announced in what he hoped was a calm voice. “Sir, Ensign Wilkinson, reporting for duty.”

“Oh?” Thomas said, looking up with an inscrutable expression at the newcomer. “Excellent! Come on in, take a seat,” he said, his expression changing to one of enthusiasm, waving Ben in so the door would shut behind him.

“First ship?” he asked.

Ben entered and took the proffered seat in front of the desk. “Yes sir. First ship and assignment. I’m really looking forward to getting settled in and down to work.” Ben was a bit surprised by this friendly greeting, he had been expecting to be standing at attention when reporting in. “I think I might just like working for this guy” was the thought going through Ben’s head.

“Glad to hear it,” Thomas said. “Thankfully, this crew is a pretty calm bunch, so it’s pretty easy going, most of the time. No fights in the lounge every night leading to half a shift in sickbay and the other half in holding cells.”
