Tom sat at his desk. The package was neatly wrapped next to the door. The chair the XO had expressed interest in was finished.

=^=Commander Pétursson. Tom Jarvis. Please come to my quarters.=^=

  • Tom

=^=On my way=^= The Commanders voice came almost immediately. He had just been sitting in his quarters when he received the call. He quickly went to a small lockbox he kept under his bed and removed the small notebook and placed it in his pocket.

A few minutes later he was outside the IntSec office and pressed the chime.

XO

As his finger reached for the chime the door shooshed open.

“Come in Commander.” Tom said from next to the replicator with a sandwich in his hand, “I was just getting myself something to eat. Would you like something?”

If Magnus looks at the panels floating over Tom’s desk, he’d see one with a video feed of the corridor in front of Tom’s door.

  • Tom, IntSec

Bump

Magnus smiled at the floating panel “I wouldn’t say no to a chicken-grape salad” He said turning his smile to the unfamiliar stranger. “I believe I have a recipe on file, check my public salad replicator files” He sat down in a chair on the other side of the IntSecs officer’s desk. He opened his notebook and started scribbling, this time however he didn’t seem to be writing but drawing.

XO

A few moments later the tom set a tray before Magnus. It had the main body of the salad in a bowl with the toppings arrayed around in smaller dishes and the dressing in a small decanter.

Moving to the other side of the desk, Tom waved his hand, in a small gesture, and the panels floating above the surface dropped into the surface and seemed to arrange themselves into a mosaic that seemed to be just below the surface.

Toms tray was a simple sandwich apparently of turkey, cheese, mayonnaise, onion, bell pepper, and pickle on a sub roll.

“Thank you for coming. Forgive the informal greeting but I wasn’t expecting you so soon. I thought there would be a few more minutes.” Tom said with a smile that seemed genuinely friendly.

  • Tom

Magnus returned the friendly smile with his own “No problem, I wasn’t doing anything” He grabbed the fork with his left hand and impaled the salad “Besides I wanted to get this done sooner rather than later “he indicated to his right hand that was still busy drawing “Seeing as I can’t remember you or our conversations I thought it would be convenient to have a clear picture of what you look like” He ate the piece of salad and chewed quietly but quickly “It’s an interesting read this, very strange to read my own memories and well-reading something handwritten in general.

XO

Tom looked mildly uncomfortable at the sketch.

“I’ve heard that, or similar, a lot in my life. Though it’s been a MINOR inconvenience in day to day life, it’s been very helpful in missions. Especially missions that require infiltration.”

Magnus nodded and laughed at his comment “Hopefully you’ll never have to infiltrate past me then.” He said looking up slightly to view the mans face.

Tom took a bite of his sandwich.

“By the way, your chair is ready. It’s under the cloth next to the door. I’ve installed a molecular grip and an AG mag lev system in the base so you can have it glide freely or lock it to the deck.”

  • Tom

Magnus Suddenly stopped his drawing and looked back at the cloth-covered chair then back at Tom with a wide smile “Well I do appreciate it, it felt like reading Science Fiction when I read about that chair, didn’t completely believe myself until I stepped in here for the first time for the second time” his tone joyful “I’m curious, during our last mission did you go with any of the teams down to the Pallasian homeworld?” He asked

XO

Tom nodded, “Yes I did. I was with you when we went to meet the head of the government there. Interesting place if a bit stuffed shirt, but then what can one expect of government heads?” Tom replied then took another bite of his sandwich.

  • Tom

Magnus stopped drawing and looked up with a slightly perplexed look on his face “Well I’ll be” He started smiling “I’ll have to remember to make a note of when I bring you with me on missions” He seemed to be entertained by this fact “I’ll have to start carrying a recording device with me.” He tapped his pencil twice on the page of his notebook “Something analog” He quickly wrote something on the opposite page “I’ll have to search the historic files for something like that. I believe humans used to use magnetic tape audio recorders” He chuckled “You know I should thank you, it’s rare that I get to indulge my love of the low tech, analog devices. There’s a simplicity in putting pencil to pen, the sound of a ticking watch” he patted his wristwatch “Or the kick of a combustion firearm”

XO

“Well popular analog covert recording devices int he past were either micro cassette or wire reel.” Tom suggested, “And yes, the older tech has it’s charm. Especially weapons with solid projectiles and ballistic properties.” Tom said taking another bite of his sandwich.

  • Tom

Magnus nodded “My cousin once had to fight off mechanical spiders with ballistic weapons on the Ark Angel some years ago, I’ll have to admit that sounded equal parts terrifying and fantastic.” He said with a smile “No I’ve had occasion to fight with melee weapons before but never a firearm. Nasty weapons for sure but very exhilarating. I’m curious, with your abilities did you never consider a career with Starfleet Intelligence?” He asked
