After reporting to his dept. head, Lt. McGregor, Ben was told he needed to report to sickbay for the required physical. This was to insure that he was healthy and that he hadn’t brought any “bugs” on board with him. He had just had a checkup at the Academy prior to posting and really didn’t expect the exam to show anything of significance. The martial arts disciplines he practiced kept him trim and fit. Of course it never hurt to be sure and it was a requirement before starting his duties on board. He would have preferred to skip this part of the checking in process as he didn’t care much for doctors or medical staff in general. After the accident that claimed his parents, they had managed to keep his brother alive for several days, but he, being the only living relative had to make the decision to remove life support, as it was the machines that were keeping his brother’s body alive. Yes he had some issues to work out, and was looking forward to a challenging Kendo match on the holo-deck to ease his frustrations. Entering sickbay, he looked for someone to report to, hoping to just get this over with.

Sage was up for the next patient so she was standing next to a counter in the bay drinking a cup of coffee when the doors parted. Spotting the young man as he entered, she greeted him. “Hello, I’m Dr Brennan, may I help you?”

“Dr Brennan, I’m Ensign Ben Wilkinson, reporting for my physical. I hope this will be quick, I’d like to see the counselor and get started with my duties.”

She raised a brow but had to smile. Newbies. So many of them were in a hurry to get through their medical eval. They were excited for their careers to begin and didn’t want something stupid like a clean bill of health holding them up. “It will take as long as it takes, Ensign. If you would have a seat on one of the bio beds, we can get started.” She held a hand out in the direction of the beds, set her coffee down and palmed the medical tricorder from the countertop, slipping it into the pocket of her jacket.

Ben eyed the doctor and went to the indicated bio beds and took a seat, muttering to himself, “Anything to get this over with.” To him doctors were all the same, thinking they knew more than anyone else, thinking they held the power of life and death in their hands. Well, the ones who had failed his brother certainly didn’t have a handle on the life part.

Sage heard the muttered comment but ignored it. A lot of officers had trouble reporting to sickbay for a ‘routine’ visit. They thought it was a complete waste of time. She joined him at the bio bed and called his record up on the monitor there. As she scanned the information, she made small talk. “I see you’re just out of the Academy so this is your first posting. What do you think of the Genny?”

—Sage

Ben sat there for a moment brooding in silence, when he realized the doctor had asked him a question, “Sorry ma’am, have a lot on my mind. I really haven’t had a chance to explore her yet, but so far I think I will really like it on board.” The doctor continued the medical screening while Ben just sat there and hoped it was over soon,
