It was just what she’d wanted to hear. “I love you too.” Closing the embrace again, they danced without further conversation until the song ended. As they left the dance floor, Sage answered his earlier question. “As to how I got the holodeck? I called in a few favors. It seems people who I’ve treated for serious injuries are very grateful for my knowledge. They had no problem trading me a couple of time slots for this one.” Back to the bar and their drinks, Sage picked hers up and drained the glass. “Mmmm, you do have good taste in liquor, Babe.”

“Barter or bribe…” Marius thought aloud. “Vodka… ironically is best when it’s flavorless. You pay to taste nothing.” Or at least that’s what he thought. Marius’ strength in liquor was the fact that he was almost never without some.

The bartender made her another without being asked and topped off Calvin’s. Sage reached out and took her husband’s hand in hers, holding it with the easy familiarity of a long time partner. “I know this will sound odd, but I miss you. I miss us having time together like this, where we focus on each other and not on work.”

—Sage

“Well between missions… you going missing… memory loss… that stranger half stalking you, my marine reunion, our marriage, that vampire crewman trying to suck you, we’ve been pretty busy over the last year.” Marius was certain that he forgot half the things that might have happened to the two of them.

“But for the record, I could spend the better part of my life spending time with you.”

Marius CO

Sage smiled. “That’s the plan, Cal. You and me together for the rest of our lives.” She didn’t include the possibility of children in the equation, even though her desire to be a mother was strong. The two of them just couldn’t agree about life after kids. If it were up to her, they would continue in Star Fleet, their children on the ship with them, but Calvin was of a different mind. He insisted they would need to give up their careers and learn to live in the civilian world. Sage thought neither one of them would be happy then, but he disagreed and that is where the conversation always ended—with a stalemate.

Shrugging those thoughts aside, not wanting to spoil the evening with an argument, Sage reached up and cupped his cheek with one hand, looking deeply into his dark, brown eyes. “I can’t imagine my life without you now. When I think back to how we started…who knew we’d end up here—an old, married couple?” It certainly hadn’t been her intention back then. All she’d wanted from the man in front of her was a ‘good time’ when either one of them felt the urge.

“Old?” Calvin questioned. He flexed his muscles and given his size whenever he did this he could puff out like the like named fish. Depending on what a person felt was attractive this could be attractive or equal amount amusing. “Speak for yourself, I’m in my prime.” He leaned back and looked at her… “You seem pretty prime as well.”

Emerald eyes looked down at the ring on her left hand. She felt the full impact of what it represented and it was so completely satisfying, so life affirming, that her eyes grew a little glossy. They’d been through so much together. So many things that had seemed insurmountable at the time, yet here they were, still married and still very much in love. She was silently grateful as she leaned forward to pull him in for a lengthy kiss.

—Sage

MMmm, Calvin leaned into the kiss for a few moments and then leaned out. “We have the holo-deck for an hour at least… ” Unless Sage had found a way to barter for more. “you wouldn’t want to end it too soon.”

Marius

She gave a throaty laugh. “Things ending too soon isn’t one of our problems, Babe.” The double entendre was on purpose. She gave him a wink and drank more vodka. “We’ve actually only got 47 minutes left here. It was as much time as I could get. But I’m sure when the time comes, we can move to our quarters for a more ‘personal’ ending to our evening out.”

There was a comfortable silence between them while music played and holo people moved around them. The usual noises of a social crowd gathered for drinks surrounded them and Sage found something very calming about it all. The thought shot through her mind that if they had kids and settled on a planet, this evening might be one of their norms—a date night, so the romance didn’t die between them while they attended to life and jobs.

Leaning back in her chair, but not enough to separate the physical connection between them, she tucked her index and middle fingers inside Cal’s shirt through the opening between button holes to make contact with some skin. “You know, I think we should be planning something for the future. Something we both can look forward to and discuss. What do you think?”

—Sage

Marius looked at her confused “Planning, for what…” he tried to decipher where she was going with this. He thought about buying a vacation home, but having one was more limiting that not. If you had a vacation home you were obligated to go to it when on vacation. If you didn’t have one you could go any were that you fancied. “A vacation. Planning for retirement?” They were decades away from the latter. He always could carve out time for the former if he wanted to, although if two of them left at the same time that could be a critical loss of command staff at the same time.

GM

Sage heard his voice take on a familiar sound. She didn’t mean to confuse him or make him uneasy, but it happened sometimes. “I don’t know what, I just feel…like I’m marking time. Like there’s nothing to look forward to.” As she took another drink, she saw a flash of something in his dark eyes. “Oh, Babe, you know I’m not talking about us. I love every moment I get to spend with you and never think I get enough of them. I’m talking about accomplishments and experiences—children maybe…like I said, I don’t know. I just want something to look forward to—something to work toward.”

—Sage

“We, for a change I want to talk about us.” Calvin made a face. Not his normal borderline angry face.. or borderline confused… or borderline constipated… which looked very similar to each other. “I had something to tell you… I didn’t know how.” He watched her “You have to promise not to get too mad… it might have a happy ending.” He paused for confirmation.

Uh oh, that didn’t sound good…

“A week ago a friend of my offered me.. us… a transfer to the sixth fleet, the Pegasus - a heavy cruiser. He said it was a waste of talent to have a combat commander with marine experience on a science ship. More risk, greater chance of promotion.” He shrugged. “I kind of rejected it out of hand. I really didn’t know why on one hand its what I trained for… hell its what you trained for.” He did know why he waited to tell her. While she supported him, Sage was having issues with his rate of advancement compared to hers.

Marius

Sage looked at him for a long minute, trying to see if he was telling her the whole of it. “He offered ‘you’ or ‘us’ a transfer to the Pegasus? Surely the ship isn’t missing the precise two positions we need, right?” They had to have a chief medical officer on board. What ship could run without one?

—Sage

Calvin smirked, “Well, I think he knows we are a package deal. I wouldn’t leave you for a Galaxy Class ship, much less a Pegasus.” He paused… “An Olinski Class… ” he shrugged. “Maybe.”

“The point was that would be a more dangerous ship and mission. Hell the Pegasus was destroyed at Wolf 359 and the rebuild was damaged beyond repair during the Dominion war.” He paused as he tried to collect his thoughts. Talking never was his strong suit.

“We don’t have forever… in this dangerous world and bad things can happen anywhere.” He took her hand. “I’m not sure I’m making sense. If you don’t want us to resign and make a home on a safe planet somewhere… Then the Genesis is one of the safest ships in the Fleet.”

Marius

So once again, ‘the powers that be’ were in Calvin’s arena. Sage realized she was tired of waiting for something to happen. Her career had been in the same position for too many years and she was ready to shake things up. “Okay, let’s do it. Let’s transfer to the Pegasus. How much time do we have to get it done?”

—Sage

He smiled.. “No baby, you don’t understand. I don’t want us to go to the Pegasus. I want to stay here where it’s relatively safe… I want to start a family.”

Marius

She was taking another drink and then responding. “I thought your friend got in touch with you because you’d put out feelers. If you didn’t want to change ships…” Her eyes got big as she realized exactly what he’d said. “Wait…WHAT?” He wanted to have children? What about his objections to having kids on a star ship? Confused but hopeful, Sage wasn’t going to utter another word until Cal clarified what he was saying.

—Sage

“I didn’t put out feelers, babe… I can’t help that there are people out there that want me.” Marius said with a flirtatious smile. He gestured at his body, flexing his pecs as he raised his eyebrows.

Sage rolled her eyes but smiled.

“It was that contact that made me think. I certainly won’t live long enough for you to change your mind and have us retire so… There are more dangerous places in the universe than the Genesis a science ship, the Pegasus a heavy cruiser on the frontier… for one. . And just because we pick a safe place that doesn’t mean accidents won’t happen. At least here the choices that put us in danger will be largely ours. With the finest crew, and the finest doctors in the Federation at our finger tips or in my bed.” He looked at her lecherously for a moment. “That’s safe enough for me… for now.”

Marius

“Wait, Cal…you’re saying you want to start a family? Here? On the ship?” She was speechless. Why the change? Why now? Sage had tears of unexpected joy in her eyes as she threw herself into his arms. “Oh my god, I can’t believe this! Cal, what made you change your mind?”

—Sage

“Well we aren’t going to live forever… and I just can’t wait for you to change your mind.” He did with a half smile. “I mean neither of us have that sort of time.” Calvin was pre-countering her accusation that he was the stubborn one. “I mean… I’m in great shape soo… I probably could out last you.”

As expected, she rolled her eyes at the comment.

He paused. “Seriously Sage… I love you. I want kids… I always had. I’ve always been terrified of orphaning them.” He left our the rest. ‘like my parents orphaned me.’

“But…” The sudden change of heart he had inspired a thousand questions in her.

“We’ll just have to be smart… careful. Keeping them,” Calvin already had thought about more than one child. “safe is our highest priority.” That wasn’t really a comment that required any kind of agreement. That was always a given for parents.

Marius

She squeezed him again before leaning back to look up into his dark eyes. “I can’t believe how lucky I am. First, the Genny, then you…and now babies!!!” There had been some very rough periods in her life, some were even with Calvin, but she’d gotten through them. Perhaps fate was smiling on her and granting her a run on good things now…

—Sage

“Why don’t we start with a baby.. and work our way to babies, unless you want to do a multiple pregnancy and get it out of the way.” That was something they could do with modern technology.” He looked at her… “Kiss dancing good-bye for about six months… and the sleep…” Marius did like his sleep. They both would be kissing that goodbye. The real question was how. He had an idea, but he doubted she would agree.

Marius

“Oh no, I want to enjoy each baby by itself—no multiple births, please.” Her mind was a whirl with all the things she needed to look into. First of all…how was she going to have a baby? Years ago she’d received an emergency surgery where her reproductive organs had been removed. Oh!!! How would they supply her half of the DNA as she didn’t have any ova nor ovaries to harvest any from. Research, research…

“By the way, I don’t have to give ALL dancing up, just a couple of genres—like pole dancing and maybe Thrashing.” She looked at him with raised brows to see if he would have a surly comeback.

—Sage

“Well those are my favorites.” Not that they had done much of either in the last year or so. No vacations since their honeymoon. He considered he might be able to take a few day off, or at least whip up something on the holo-deck during their off hours, Rank had its privileges.

He saw her pause as she considered how she would give birth after her surgery. It was a plan that put in place years ago… “We have the cloning option.” Many worlds inside the Federation practiced cloning. It was not legal in the Federation as a rule, but inside the planetary systems, their own laws held sway. “Mariposa for instance, has some of the most advance cloning facilities in the quadrant. They can clone your body without the brain… we can harvest the uterus implant it and all natural child birth. ” He said hopefully.
