“Well, lead on. I think it’s very bad manners to enter a man’s house before him.” she said softly.

  • Reia

“Grandfather had built it,” he said. “Well, him and a crew lifted in with the materials. He slipped out of their casual embrace and took her hand. Kicking the snow off his boots at the stub of the first step, Dagen heard the familiar hollow thud now softened by the snow. Little bits had drifted on the steps and he sidestepped that as he moved up the steps with her. The decking was broad but now littered with small drifts that covered things that had been left there. The wind made chimes out of the traps that hung from a hook not far from the door. Two windows then a patio like set of window/doors were along the wall that formed the deck. “His name was Burle.” He turned toward her as he turned the knob to the thick wooden door. “I had a Bribble at one time .. cross between a tribble and a rabbit. I named it Burle. Grandfather would have been mortified.”

The entry was night and day. When they entered the roomy foyer and closed the door gone was the cold wind and air and replaced with the calm of the cabin. The foyer had hooks on the wall to the left, seating along the right with a long wooden bench, and facing them a half dozen ‘lockers’ in wood with a kind of footlocker underneath. A door led out into a corridor that had other ‘pantry’ like doors and a kitchen space before it opened up farther down. “Home away from home,” as dad would call it. He sat and brought up a foot to take off his boots. “I just called it ‘fun’.” While he was doing these things he kept his eyes mostly on Reia. As much as this was a cabin of his past he irrationally felt that he wanted her to like it too.
Dagen

Reia walked with Dagen being careful to sidestep everything on the porch that my have had unknown hazards hidden beneath the snow. She laughed at the thought of the furry creature he’d been discussing not quite being able to picture it in her mind. Perhaps she would look it up after they were done with this little adventure.

Sitting down next to him, she stretched her legs and then her feet after she took off her boots.

It was nice sitting after that ski. Dagen’s muscles felt good. It was hardly a biathlon push but he felt good for having done it, and having done it with Reia. There was something about engaging in things together that made the activity that much more satisfying. As he glanced at Reia then ran his eyes down to her unshod feet and how comfortable they were at that moment he realized that he really didn’t like being alone - not after having tasted Reia’s company for these months. His second boot dropped to the floor and he stood, stretching.

“Yes actually, it does sound like a lot of fun.”

  • Reia

Dagen opened up one of the lockers before unzipping his jacket which he hung up. “I was really active when I was a teen with routines and schedules and everything, but when it was time to come here it was like a total break from it.” Flashing her a smile he said, “Different routines I guess here.” Zipping down his ski suit he stepped out of it and hung it on a hook inside, revealing ‘issue’ shirt and shorts. Reaching inside the locker he took out a housecoat. “This was a staple of the house in the winter trips,” he said, tugging it closed. Opening another locker he removed another and handed it to Reia. “Something for warmth until we can get a fire going.”
Dagen

As Reia listened to Dagen she gladly slipped out of her own skisuit to reveal a rose colored set of panties and cami that covered everything nicely. Taking a housecoat, she shook it out and slipped it on thinking the only thing that would make it better would be slippers but, she was a guest and that would be a silly thing to ask for.

Dagen ‘politely’ kept his eyes on Reia as she donned the housecoat. He would have enjoyed her prancing about the cabin in that spare covering, the cabin was not exactly ‘heated’ by more than the fireplace and an emergency power unit. The latter would be looked at, serviced and then turned on if need be - something that would provide both heat in the cold and cool in the summer. They tended to not use it much and Dagen had not actually given thought to it until that moment. Once it was tied Dagen came over and gave her a long, close hug. She would be the first girl he’d brought to the cabin - even if it was a holo cabin. She smelled of the outdoors and the familiar wood smell, not unlike cedar, of the lockers. He didn’t let her go before giving her a long kiss. “Let me show you the place,” he said. There was an undertone of boyish excitement in his voice.

“If I go too long without a change in routine, life gets boring and I get cranky or, at least, that’s what my grandparents tell me. I guess I have a bit of a sundowner about me.” she said with a smile.

  • Reia

Dagen could understand that on one level given the amount of times he had changed ships and living conditions. At the same time he could well hunker down and just do what he was doing. He winked and took her hand. “I’ll try not to bore you then,” he said playfully, walking with her through the door. Pantry doors, a refrigerator and other kitchen things formed a wall on the left. Counters in front of the windows, sinks and a wide stove were on the right. Above that were cupboards with small glass windows that showed utensils and place settings. This opened out to a broad wooden dining room table and thick heavy chairs around it. A cabinet again held more lace settings and nick nacks of carven items out of wood. Above that was a liquor cabinet modestly stocked. Beside that were doors heading out onto the deck. Opposite that was a large open room with three couches in a U shape in front of a large fireplace. A door led off to the right of the fireplace. Beyond a central door that was open revealed a corridor with other doors beyond. “Home away from home,” he said.
- Dagen

Reia took his hand and laughed as they walked through the house.

“I’m not sure you could ever bore me.” she smiled and gave his hand a playful squeeze as she glanced here and there admiring the hominess of it all.

Pausing, she looked out onto the deck.

“I winder if anybody’s ever thought of putting hot tub on that thing. Sorry, just a silly thought.” she said turning back to her handsome host.

  • Reia

“Not silly,” Dagen said. “Us kids made a pitch for it or something like it. Dad waffled, saying the lake was the point of it with swimming and nature. Granddad, well, it was not on his radar. Doing that was not .. roughing it.” He knocked his knuckles on the dining room table. “I guess it was a little hard to convince him out of his idea of ‘roughing’ it.” He gestured to the doors and deck beyond. “The sunset is brilliant.” Craning his neck to look out the snow spotted windows he continued, “At least when one can see the sun.”

Moving past Reia he brought his hand to her waist and slid it along her back as he passed by her to move to the common room. Thick rugs were on the floor between the couches and blankets draped over the back of each of them. Overhead a heavy wrought iron chandelier hung as the sole lighting for the room. “Through there,” he said, pointing to the back hallway. “Bathroom and massive tub to the right. Other rooms are bedrooms.” He smiled and looked at Reia. “Mine’s on the left.” Turning about he pointed to the door next to the fireplace by the wall. “Door to storage and the stairs to the basement. No holos here. Guess that is the concept of roughing it. Make your own fun.” His eyes met hers and he smiled. “
- Dagen

Reia smiled back at Dagen. They definitely knew how to make their own fun.

“Yes, I was raised by my grandparents so I understand that you really can’t talk them out of their ways but, you couldn’t get me swimming in that cold lake during the winter. Oh well…” she said with a sigh, “I guess I was just thinking of different things.”

  • Reia

“They like what they like,” Dagen said. “I don’t remember my grandmother. She died when I was very little. My growing up was with weekly visits by grandfather and to hear his stories. He was quite a traveler - at least around Trill. I think one can stay on one’s world and not lose anything for not traveling the stars. There is so much even on a world to see and do.” He grinned. “I didn’t like it much either, the cold water. It did warm up nice in the summer but was cool in the spring. There’s a little waterfall I’d sit under if it was real warm. “The cabin is stocked with food, and drinks are up top. I know you brought something too.” He smiled then looked over at the fireplace. “I’ll look at getting a fire going.”
- Dagen

Reia smiled and began to unpack the small bag she brought.

“You mean besides the brandy? Yes. But that fire sounds absolutely lovely.” she said settling in on one of the couches and beginning to pour.

  • Reia

There was something therapeutic about setting up a fire. It was not unlike building something, even if that something would burn down in hours. He had enjoyed setting the fire back as a teenager, having learned it from his grandfather and fussed over by his father and egged on by his brother. In that he supposed it was a whole family affair of making a good fire. All told he was not nearly as skilled as his forefathers, however, that said it was not that hard to do inside a cabin with dry wood and the proper lighting utensils. “We can start there,” Dagen said, tugging back the sleeve of the robe to not interfere with the lighting of the kindling. A weak laser did the trick of setting the wood going; that wasn’t an ‘age old’ thing but it was effective.

Standing he wiped his hands on the robe and padded over to join her. Even in a robe she looked lovely, sensual, and yummy all bundled up. Settling himself next to her he drew close with one arm around her. Leaning in he gave her a soft lingering kiss. “I’m so thrilled to show you my world that I grew up in,” he said. “I’m excited to see yours.”
- Dagen

Reia leaned into the kiss and Dagen as well. She hadn’t brought many people home to meet her grandparents. A friend or two from the neighborhood, one from the academy, and two close colleagues that needed a place to stay but, never someone she cared about like Dagen. She decided right then and there that she would do everything in her power to make them like him. To make certain they saw him the way she did. Kind, sweet, and strong.

“I’m certain we’ll catch it at a warm time of the year but, don’t worry, there’s a lovely little spring on the edge of the property. Just perfect for cooling off. If you’re very very good, I’ll show it to you the first night.” she said teasingly.
