After reporting to his dept. head, Lt. McGregor, Ben was told he needed to report to sickbay for the required physical. This was to insure that he was healthy and that he hadn’t brought any “bugs” on board with him. He had just had a checkup at the Academy prior to posting and really didn’t expect the exam to show anything of significance. The martial arts disciplines he practiced kept him trim and fit. Of course it never hurt to be sure and it was a requirement before starting his duties on board. He would have preferred to skip this part of the checking in process as he didn’t care much for doctors or medical staff in general. After the accident that claimed his parents, they had managed to keep his brother alive for several days, but he, being the only living relative had to make the decision to remove life support, as it was the machines that were keeping his brother’s body alive. Yes he had some issues to work out, and was looking forward to a challenging Kendo match on the holo-deck to ease his frustrations. Entering sickbay, he looked for someone to report to, hoping to just get this over with.

Sage was up for the next patient so she was standing next to a counter in the bay drinking a cup of coffee when the doors parted. Spotting the young man as he entered, she greeted him. “Hello, I’m Dr Brennan, may I help you?”

—Sage

“Dr Brennan, I’m Ensign Ben Wilkinson, reporting for my physical. I hope this will be quick, I’d like to see the counselor and get started with my duties.”

She raised a brow but had to smile. Newbies. So many of them were in a hurry to get through their medical eval. They were excited for their careers to begin and didn’t want something stupid like a clean bill of health holding them up. “It will take as long as it takes, Ensign. If you would have a seat on one of the bio beds, we can get started.” She held a hand out in the direction of the beds, set her coffee down and palmed the medical tricorder from the counter top, slipping it into the pocket of her jacket.

Ben eyed the doctor and went to the indicated bio beds and took a seat, muttering to himself, “Anything to get this over with.” To him doctors were all the same, thinking they knew more than anyone else, thinking they held the power of life and death in their hands. Well, the ones who had failed his brother certainly didn’t have a handle on the life part.

Sage heard the muttered comment but ignored it. A lot of officers had trouble reporting to sickbay for a ‘routine’ visit. They thought it was a complete waste of time. She joined him at the bio bed and called his record up on the monitor there. As she scanned the information, she made small talk. “I see you’re just out of the Academy so this is your first posting. What do you think of the Genny?”

—Sage
Ben sat there for a moment brooding in silence, when he realized the doctor had asked him a question, “Sorry ma’am, have a lot on my mind. I really haven’t had a chance to explore her yet, but so far I think I will really like it on board.” The doctor continued the medical screening while Ben just sat there and hoped it was over soon,

She pulled the tricorder from her pocket and began scanning Wilkinson, comparing those reading to the ones on file from his last physical. “Hmmm. Ensign, I need you to disrobe from the waist up, please.” Emerald eyes gave him a friendly look. “It looks like you didn’t board the Genesis alone.” At his puzzled expression, Sage opened a drawer on the front of the table and withdrew a small device that looked like a large barrel syringe without a needle.

—Sage

Ben couldn’t think of a reason for the doctors statement, he had just had a physical at the academy a few weeks before this posting to the Genesis. Sighing and willing to do anything to hurry things along, Ben peeled his uniform down to his waist, and waited to see what the issue was.

JSO

Sage examined his skin, taking note of any markings like moles, bumps, scars or larger freckles. Eventually, she circled the bed until she stood at his back and did the same thing. He felt an occasional brush of her fingers along his skin, but there was no serious contact until she began palpating the back of neck where it met the right shoulder.

“Ahhhhh, there it is…” He felt something solid press against the area. “Okay, Ensign, this shouldn’t hurt but there will be a slight pinch.”

—Sage

Ben felt the doctor examining his back. “Exactly what is it you’ve found back there ?” Ben turned his head and tried to look back to where the doctor was pressing on his shoulder area. As far as he knew there was nothing where she was pressing her instrument. ‘There what is ?” he asked.

JSO

There wasn’t any real sound but the pinch she’d warned about felt more like being poked with a pin. “Ahhhh, there you are, you sneaky little devil.” She took a moment to heal the open track in the dermis she’d created, then moved the the back of his right arm. “It seems you picked up a couple of Bolian bore worms in your recent travels.” Once again Sage pressed the extraction device against Wilkinson’s triceps and he felt another pinch. After another moment, she rounded the table and held out the syringe device to him. In the glass tube, two segmented worms, in larval form, one measuring 6 mm and the other 7.5 mm squirmed around each other.

—Sage

Ben stared at the parasitical worms and wondered where he could have picked them up. Then it occurred to him that during his last year at the academy one of his instructors had mentioned that a rogue planet named “Dakala” would be passing fairly close to Earth and previous explorers had found several indigenous life forms there, one of which was intelligent. This planet was thought to have broken out of it’s orbit and was now traveling through interstellar space. Ben and several of his classmates had decided this would be an excellent opportunity to do a little exploring of their own and maybe earn some extra credit. One of Ben’s classmates family owned a small interplanetary shipping business, and they were able to “borrow” a small freighter for their brief journey. As he recalled they stayed there three days and while the others slept in the small freighter, Ben in order to make more room had basically camped out, and slept in a small open shelter he had rigged up. They never did meet any of the intelligent life forms, but Ben felt they were being observed the whole time.

“Thank you doctor. Glad to not have any little friends tagging along. I wonder why they didn’t catch these at my last physical ?” Ben queried. “My understanding of these things is that they crawl in your ears at night and lay eggs. Brrrrrr !” Ben squirmed a bit on the table and a shiver ran through him . “Again, thank you” Ben was thinking that he may have to change his perspective on medical personnel, at least one Dr. Brennan.

Ben -JSO (Now bug free)

“You’re welcome.” She took the glass tube from him and handed it to a nearby nurse. “Put these in isolation in the lab, please.”

She then turned her green eyes on the Ensign. “Everything else looks good and you shouldn’t have any discomfort from the small procedures today. Just be glad that you came in when you did. Another couple of days and the worms would have been mature enough to produce offspring.”

“You can redress now and go about your business. I’ll post your medical release in the system for your DH to see.”
