Siobhan had slept in and was going to the Counselor first thing in the morning. The party had been in full swing still when she had arrived. Shuttle weary, she had waved off her escort’s invite to join the party instead of going to her quarters. This morning, straight away, she was at the Couselor’s office to do her check in before heading to Medical for her physical clearance and department check in with the Medical Chief.

Palming the chime on the door, she wondered, for a moment, if she should have confirmed the appointment. After all, she doubted the Counselor had planned for the party the night before when the orders and appointment had been set nearly a week ago.

“Come in,” a high pitched bird like voice chirped. When the door slid open, Siobhan could see the changes made to the counselor’s office. The office had a desk with a computer access terminal and comfortable chair for the new counselor, as well as a similar chair across the desk for a visitor. A couch that seemed to be imported from a Terran twentieth century psychiatrist’s office was nearby. Along the right wall was a long couch that could seat at least six. In the left hand corner were three diminutive chairs and a set of children’s blocks. The rest of the room’s corners had potted large potted ferns.

A young woman, barely more than a girl was walking forward to greet the young biologist. The new counselor’s lavender pageboy haircut stood out more than the slender but curvaceous body in the silver catsuit did. It was obvious that the young woman believed that a civilian, non-official appearance would put her clients at ease, but so form fitting was her outfit that only a Risan or a Betazoid could possibly think that appropriate attire.

“Hello there, I’m Ensign Lydia Ayeka, your new counselor. Pleased to meet you,” the girl chirped in a voice so high and birdlike it almost hurt the ears. “Make yourself at home. What can I do for you?”

The variation of the comforts of the room both surprised, and pleased, Siobhan. This was a person who saw to everyone’s needs. From the official to the unofficial visitor, everyone would be welcome here. The high pitch voice beckoning her in had been a surprise, but when the voice came face to face, she had been prepared. “A pleasure to meet you. Lieutenant JG Siobhan DeNaris, the new Xenobiologist. I understand there was quite the party last night. If you wish me to come back later, I’d be happy to. I don’t want to be a nusance the ‘morning after’.” She was admiring the woman’s figure and while the outfit was a shock, it wasn’t unflattering, and oddly, seemed to suit the small woman.

“Why not at all, Siobhan, this gives us a chance to get to know each other,” the young counselor chirped. “Do you want anything from the replicator? Come in, please. Tell me about yourself.”

Siobhan smiled and shook her head with a slight rise of her hand. “No, nothing. Thank you. I just finished breakfast.” Glancing at the various seating areas, Siobhan nodded. “Preference for location? Your choice.” She laughed knowing the woman would probably make it her choice, anyway. “Well, there are a couple decades worth of telling. And I am sure you don’t want to hear it all,” she grinned.

“Well, I guess the highlights are, I’m the first in several generations to amount to more than a reading and writing capable farmer. Also the first in as many generations, to leave Earth with a wonderment of space that staring at the stars couldn’t pacify. I want to be the first to touch planets and see their animals and plants. First contact is great, and I by no means mock it. But even a planet with no ‘intelligent life’ as we perceive it, is something I desire to set my feet upon and record for others to know about.” She laughed as she realized her life was summed up into less than half a dozen sentences. “And I love to draw maps and collect them when I am able.” The last bit added almost as if an apology that everything before it had been almost clinical in its recitation.
