She had been in medical for so long, it had taken stepping out of the medical bay to realize it hadn’t been her ultimate destination that day. Coming in to medical had been meant to be a stepping stone before going to her Department Head to make herself known and ready for duty.

A smile, tired though the edges were, lifted the edges of her lips as she brushed errant strands of hair behind her ear and made her way to the CSO’s office. In light of everything happening, she wasn’t even sure he would be there. But she had to try. If he wasn’t, then she’d just find where he was and make herself useful there.

The door to the office opened, and a man rushed out, as if he was in a hurry. He stopped when he saw Siobhan standing there, and gave her a wary smile.

“Hi there, you must be one of our new arrivals,” The man said, nodding. “I’m David Michaels, the Chief Science Officer here. And you are?” He asked curiously.

A small gasped cry of surprise fell from Siobhan’s lips as the man nearly bowled into her. “I’m sorry. This is a bad time, I see. Yes, I’m your new xenobiologist, Siobhan. Sorry, Lieutenant JG DeNarris.”

Her slighter, five foot eight inch frame, stepped back realizing just how close they were. Looking up ar his full six foot height made her wonder, for a moment, just how much power was in the man before her. She blinked, realizing the trail her thoughts were taking, and quickly recovered her smile as she fought the heat the scientist felt starting to warm her cheeks.

“I can come back later, if you prefer. I don’t mean to keep you,” she added, despite what her head thought.

“No, no” He said, giving her a smile, and extending his hand in greeting. “I’m sorry I didn’t to startle you. I’ve just been a little frazzled. I have a few minutes now I can give you a quick tour of a few of the labs we have and then maybe we can sit down again later on and get to know each other better.”

He looked around, then glanced back at her, waving his arm in a sweeping motion. “Here on deck 6, we use Science Lab 9 as our main lab, since it’s connected to my office. We do a variety of tests and experiments here. We actually have a total of eighteen labs here on board, with an additional botanical garden and hydroponics bay on deck 4.” He paused. “As the sub department head of Xeno Biology you will be working on Deck 5 where we also have our Zoology lab. Would you like to see that first?”

“If we have time,” she nodded. “Maybe I can help out somehow. Well, in more ways than tending wounded in sickbay as I have since arriving. My apologies for being late. It seems my check in was at the exact moment all hell broke lose around here. What’s going on?” She said following him. “I mean, I felt the shudder, but no one in medical seems to know what’s happening. And the wounded weren’t exactly in any condition to speak.”

David smiled sheepishly. “Yes, I was actually headed to the Bridge just now when I ran into you. I haven’t been informed of much of what’s going on except that the Yellow Alert has been issued.” He ran a hand through his hair. “If the captain needed me on the Bridge, then no doubt he would have called me by now. “

David looked around for a moment. “Maybe I can have someone show you to the biology labs and then I can catch up with you later?” It was definitely more of a question than a statement. It appeared the CSO had quite a lot on his kind, perhaps not all pertaining to the current situation.

Siobhan saw his frustration and smiled. “Take a breath, Chief. As you said, if you were needed, he would have called you. So the yellow alert isn’t because some gelatinous goo has formed off the port bow and threatened to mate with the ship.” She laughed lightly and shook her head. “I don’t need someone to show me around. Being at Yellow Alert means we all need to fend for ourselves. How about once the alert is lifted, we grab a bite to eat. On one hand, if it is quick, my guess is you haven’t eaten today. Scientists are notorious for that. And if it does last a while, then my guess is you won’t take a break ‘to’ eat. We can do my check in then. I can find my way to the labs and see what all the hubbub is about and you can go to the bridge, after you take a breath, and see what calamity the ship had steered itself into. How does that sound?” She cocked her head, slightly and smiled as if wanting to make sure he realized it was sincerity and not mockery in her voice and reasoning.

David returned the smile. “That sounds like a plan. I appreciate your understanding. NE Dorian over there is one of the scientists that’s been with me from the beginning of my time here. He can answer any questions you might have.” He turned to leave, then turned back towards her. “I will see you later then.” He have a nod and then left the main science lab.
