It was several weeks later, the crew of the Merrimack had in that time been given some R&R while docked at Deep Space K-9. Finally on a mid-morning Monday at 0900 hours the ship had departed under orders to return to Earth and the Sol system. On their 2nd day to return they would receive a hail from Starfleet Academy from the Academy commandant Admiral Rose.

Glen was in his Ready Room. While he was glad to be returning to Earth (he might get a chance to visit his son, Iain) it was also tinged with sadness as they would be losing Bre and Noelle and it would be a time of great change for the Merrimack.

Tia was on the bridge at her station when the hail arrived. The fact it was an Admiral piqued her interest and she swiveled in her seat to see the view screen or at least listen in.

“On screen.” Kord said simply.

William turned around on his swivel chair and looked at the view screen. It had been too long since he’d been to Earth, it’d be nice to go home for a little bit.

Cross silently entered the bridge ,she wondered what the Admiral was about to say. For some reason that only the doctor knew she did not relish the idea of getting off the Merrimack.

Nkosenye was already at his station, and looked up as the call came through. He hoped that he may have time to see his family on their trip to Earth. It had been fat too long since he had seen them in person.

Glen joined them of the Bridge and stood next to Kord.

On the screen the Starfleet Academy logo came up followed by the aging mid 70s face of Admiral Rose, he was a deeply greying human man but still sharp in the eyes mentally. =/\= Ah Captain! Good to finally get through to you. I have a most interesting short term assignment for you and your crew!=/\= He said with a beaming smile and a twinkle in his eyes.

Glen took a breath and smiled right back with such a sunny smile it was quite extraordinary, while internally he was thinking How many times have I heard this BS in the last few years? I’ve seen that twinkle in the eye more than once before. Why is it always the “short term assignments”? ‘Matters less whether they are “interesting” or “routine”? Next he will tell us we are being “honoured” again!

=/\= Starfleet Academy is piloting a new lesson plan in the next few days, we would like the honor of rolling it out to be part of your crew. The long and short of it is for senior or experienced in the field officers and crews to rotate back to the Academy every now and then and give a lecture or two on various non-secretive topics to the senior classes. They can range on any topic or field of the officer or crew choosing. Think your crew would be up for it?=/\= he asked. =/\= You would all sign up for a topic of your choice and we would fill in a time slot for the lecture. I figured after the exciting frontier life lately you’ve all had this would be a nice change of pace.=/\= He added.

Glen sighed but also thought, It doesn’t sound very crazy hard or dangerous! Where is the catch? Nothing exciting had ever happened at the Academy since Admiral Kirk took a ship of green recruits to battle with the V’ger

=/\= With all due respect Admiral, my crew are quite capable and “up for” whatever is thrown at them! This sounds like a spacewalk next to our recent missions. So, yes, of course we would be very happy to pass on our vast experience to the elite future of Starfleet. Just small one thing, Admiral, I’m assuming that this assignment won’t be classed as part of our R&R? Crew have families and friends they would like to visit too. They need that… deserve that too, after spending so long out on the exciting frontier. =/\=

Nkosenye’s face didn’t change from his trademark scowl, but inside he thought “Well said, Captain. Well said.”

Nkosenye, CoS

William perked up at the sound of lecturing. He’d always wanted to go teach at the Academy, especially since he’d spent such little time there himself. Teaching the future scientific minds of the Fleet sounded like a good job. Also, there were several excellent bars in San Fransisco, maybe now he could take that hulk out drinking. “So long as there are no actual spacewalks this time” He muttered to the officer next to him that responded with a slight chuckle.
