Cross too smelled the sweetly intoxicated musk of his body, she looked up at the man holding her with a straight backed- stance of a knight.
Her skin was porcelain pale while her features seemed to have been carved by angels. She put a hand at the junction of his neck and clavicle pulling his face closer, their lips nearly touching but the female doctor did not make the first move …maybe Mthunzi did not want it to go any further then a simple embrace .

Cross CMO.

Mthunzi’s arm that encircled her shoulders moved up her neck slowly and he moved his lips to hers and kissed her gently for a few long and lingering moments, after which he separated from her slightly but kept his forehead pressed against hers. “I will be very honest with you. I did not expect this tonight. Thought about, yes. But did not expect it.” he said as he ran his fingers gently through the hair on the back of her head, his deep voice causing a rumbling in his chest that she would feel as he spoke. “I have thought about our time on that first mission together… you had hurt your ankle, and I carried you. I didn’t realize why I kept remembering how you felt in my arms. All I knew is that memory came to me every time I looked at you.” and he smiled, his teeth showing brilliant white against his ebony skin. “It was not an unwelcome memory, dear one…”

Miriam did not hesitate and her soft lips pressed against his before pulling slightly away, though her gaze never left his’‘Well I’ll be honest with you, when you first picked me up I was about to scratch your face but then I realized how good it felt to be in your arms’‘.

The female doctor glanced at the bed ‘’You can pick me up again’‘ her breathing became heavier ‘’If you so wish’‘ she whispered.

Nkosenye’s eyes followed hers, and then he looked back at her. He reached up and brushed her cheek with his finger tips and again pressed his forehead to hers. “I do. Very much. But I do not want you to think that is why I am here. I am here for you, not your bed. And I do not take that offer lightly.” and he looked directly into her eyes. “I want to be with you, Miriam. Not just there…” he said with a nod to the bed, “… but here.” and he laid his large black hand across her heart. “I want to be here for you-” and he lifted her hand and placed it over his own heart “- as you are here for me.” Mthunzi’ heart raced, and his breathing matched her own.

‘’That is what I want too ‘’Cross replied, again putting her face next to his chest feeling it rising and descending ‘’I do not want you to do anything you may be uncomfortable with ‘’ two lone tears appeared beneath her lashes ‘’Mthunzi..... I am but all alone ,my true friend is myself’‘.

Cross Dr.

Mthunzi looked down and gently wiped the tears away with his thumb while cradling her face in his palm. “Not anymore. You have me. I won’t let you be alone, even if I am not with you in the flesh. I will be with you as long as you will have me. In whatever form or fashion that may take. But no, little one…” and he lifted her chin so that he could look into her eyes, “… you are not alone. Not anymore.” and he lowered his face and kissed her lips gently and ran his fingertips down her cheek and down her neck until he could wrap his arm around her and pull her closer to him.

As he ran his fingertips down her neck Miriam made a deep inarticulate sound of pleasure and when Mthunzi pulled her closer to his body she whispered two simple words ‘’Take me’‘.

Cross Dr.

In a single motion, Mthunzi effortlessly lifted her to his chest and stood up. He walked over to the side of the bed and gently laid her down and then lay next to her. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close to him, kissing her deeply. He then rolled so that he was on his back and she lay on top of him. He smiled as he kissed her and pulled away just enough to say “I don’t want to crush you.” and chuckled. He then went back to kissing her as he ran his hands slowly across her back and sides.

And in the vastness of the universe, two grains of sand became one...............................

Some hours later, Nkosenye laid on his back with Miriam cradled in his arm next to him. The only things adorning him were the sheet across his body and the necklace It was dark in the room, and the dinner lay untouched on the table. As he brushed her hair away from her face, he said “I have to admit to a certain disappointment.” and he paused before adding “The stew…” and he looked down at her and smiled. The faint light from the stars outside the window gave his ebony skin a sheen his dark eyes sparkled in the reflected light as he looked at Cross. “And now I am famished.” he added as he laid his head back and stared at the ceiling.

Cross cuddled up to him ‘’Well if you do not mind eating it cold’‘ she replied.
After a couple of minutes in silence Miriam asked him about the necklace ‘’It must mean something to you cause you’re always wearing it,even though it would be under the shirt when on duty?’‘ .

Cross Dr.

“Always.” and he looked down and lifted the pendant. “It is water buffalo horn. The woman who gave it to me said that it would give me strength, and protect me. It has not left my skin since she presented it to me.” and then he looked at Miriam. “But do not think I keep this as a token of a past love. That is not the case.” and he rolled onto his side, propped his head up with his hand, and looked at her. “When I was a boy, I wanted to be a park ranger. My parents wanted me to go into academia, like they had, but my interests laid with more… active… pursuits. So, I trained in the wildlife reserve. It is a huge place… over fourteen thousand square kilometers.” As he spoke, his eyes drifted off as if he was looking at the place he described. “It is filled with animals. Lions, buffalo, hippopotamus, giraffe, gazelle, cheetahs… and it is beautiful. I loved being there. I would spend days alone in the wilderness.” and his voice trailed off for a moment before he shook his head slightly and cleared it.

“My parents kept telling me I needed to dedicate myself to my studies; that the old ways, while important for us to learn about, were gone. I did not… do not… believe that. My people have traditions from before written history, and they matter… well, at least to me. But as I was saying…” and he laid back and looked at the ceiling.

“When I was fifteen years old, a woman was abducted from a city near the preserve. She was taken by a man intent on… well, doing things that should not be done.” he said as if censoring himself. “The local police tracked him to the edge of the park, but they could not follow him further. They contacted the Rangers, and they called me in to help track them. I found the tracks and followed them for almost a full day. I found them in a ravine. My communicator’s power cell had died, so I couldn’t call for help, but I had a flare gun. I moved a few hundred yards way and fired the flare, and then moved to watch the man. He had the woman tied down to the ground, and had removed her clothes. He saw the flare and pulled a knife, and I knew I had to do something. I was above them, on the edge of the ravine side, so I just jumped off and landed on him.” and he looked at her and grinned and said softly “I was a large fifteen year old.” and then he looked back. “I landed on him and knocked the knife away, and he and I struggled. I was able to get him in a choke hold and made him pass out. I restrained him, and cut the woman free. I gave her my shirt and pants, and some water. Some Rangers arrived about an hour later. The man was arrested and sent to prison. The woman I saved gave me the necklace after she recovered. She and her family stay in touch with mine back home. She is doing well. A teacher now.”

The doctor stood silent taking in what Nkosenye had to say. There was indeed, an almost déjà vu feeling ‘’So joining Star Fleet was not quite your first choice of career?’‘ she asked ..........her voice was not quite in control.

Cross Dr.

Nkosenye chuckled, the sound like distant thunder in his chest. “No, dear one. I had no intention of sailing the stars. My people… my land… my heritage… those are what I wanted to grow with. I was recruited to Star Fleet out of the Police Academy. They said that I could do more by showing the Universe what my people were than by running around on a single planet. My parents thought it would be a good fit as well. I considered it, and then went to the Academy.” and he rolled his head over so he could look at her and run his fingertips across her cheek. “A part of me always regretted that decision… Until now.”
