Inverness, Grey Seal Pub

Posted March 26, 2019, 1:17 p.m. by Lieutenant William B. Grey (Chief Science Officer) (Hjortur Ingi)

The Grey seal was a common sight around the Scottish Isles, a beast much larger than its cousin the Harbour seal in the Phocidae family, another common sight in the area. Around the late 20th century the animal was almost made extinct by overhunting. However now at the beginning of the 24th century, the animal was fairly common and even occasionally culled by the European population to prevent overpopulation. The fairly popular Pub in the City of Inverness in the Scottish highlands was only partly named after the large animal, the other part was that for the last 300 or so years the Grey Clan had been running it. The family had some extensive farmland in the middle of the Highlands. The three major branches of the Grey clan split their time between Inverness, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and of course at the Family Farm.

Willam Grey had been raised between Inverness, the farm and his mother’s house just outside Austin Texas. However, as he grew older he found himself spending more time in his families Pub in his birth town. Between lectures, a few hours before his own and only a little after his Captains he took the next shuttle to Scotland and from there a short transport skip to Inverness. All in all the trip took less than an hour. Of course, he could have simply used the transporter system but even after almost a decade in Starfleet he still wasn’t used to being transported around.

When he took the first step inside the Pub he got several odd looks. It took him a moment to realize that he was still wearing his Red Starfleet Uniform, he looked down and chuckled awkwardly, it was around 1900 hours so the pub was fairly crowded. Suddenly he heard a mighty voice boom from behind a small crowd “There’s only one lanky bastard in Starfleet with such green bloody eyes” The accent was very thick, on par with the city Will was in. The crowd was silent for a moment as they waited for the large man behind the bar to continue “William B Grey, I see they’ve finally started feeding ye” He said and boomed with laughter as if what he said had been the funniest thing. The crowd laughed with him and raised their glasses and the regular buzz started once more. At the bar itself, a small space was created for the Scientist, a light pint of beer waiting for him. Will moved closer and took a seat, grabbing the frothy drink and starting immediately. For exactly 9.4 seconds he drank continuously and finished the pint in one go. The Large bartender laughed and reached his massive hand across the table and gave Will a firm shake of his shoulder “Welcome home, lad. I see you haven’t been forgetting what I taught ye” It had taken Will a moment to get used to the thick accent of his home, but not long “They have much stronger stuff out there in space, Uncail Connie, Even yer homebroos are nothing compared to Romulan Ale” He said, quickly using his own accent to calm his uncle down “Ach, yoo sound like a bleedin’ spacer now, genius er not, yer still a Grey and Grey’s drink Frothy beer and scotch, nae Ale’s from anuther galaxy” He pured Will another drink.

William rolled his eyes at his uncle. His family hadn’t left Earth since the early days of Human space exploration, ever since his ancestors Charles and Rachel Grey served with Starfleet. Their Children had decided to stay and mind the Farm until William that is. He took another large sip, finishing only half of his drink “I cannae stay fer long, I havta give a lecture at Starfleet Academy in a few hours. I’ll be back later tonight, we’ll get pissed together, ye can bring som’othe lads” Will offered.

Connie smiled “I think that’s a brilliant Idea, I’ll make some calls, It’s been too long Willie”
