Yibanathi caught the hesitation and smiled slightly. “Don’t fret, dear.” and she ran an old-fashioned manual peeler across a sweet potato, dropping the shavings into the sink before her. “We made peace with Mthunzi’s decision many seasons past. We are used to him being gone, so far from us. But we hold him in our hearts, and know that the spirits protect him and he, in turn, protects those around him. The Universe may be a big place, but love isn’t based on geography or proximity.” and she looked up from the sink where she was peeling and washing vegetables and looked at her oldest child with pride. “He is always with us, and we are always with him. He knows this.” and then she looked at Cross and, with an insight that only comes from being a mother, said very softly “And now he has you, if my eyes do not deceive me? Or am I speaking out of turn? I do not want to… complicate… anything, child.”

Yibanathi, Nkosenye’s Mom

Cross glanced at Nkosenye’s then back at his mother ‘’Yes ma’am I love your son, that is the only thing I can say for I have no idea what the future holds ‘’ the doctor had learned the hard way not to take anything or anyone for granted.

Her words provoked a huge smile from the ebony-skinned woman and she danced a little in a circle. When her daughters looked at her, she said “Mind your own, girls! Let the women talk!” with a big smile.

‘’He’s lucky to have a family who seem to love him dearly,on the other hand I have no one .......or perhaps now I do?’‘ Cross asked with a slight smile.

Yibanathi looked at Cross, directly in the eye. She reached down and took Cross’s hands in her own and said “You have a family and a home to call your own if you want it, child.” and she looked at Nomusa and Zanele. “Girls, come here to me.” and the two tall Zulu women came and stood next her. “We were right. They are together. And our dear one here has no family of her own to share the news with.” At that Nomusa, the one who scowled at Cross when they arrived, stepped forward and said “You break his heart, I will feed you to the lions. If you take care of him as yours - honor him, protect him, and make sure he is as loved by you as he is by us- then you have a family, and we have a new sister!” and she reached forward and wrapped her arms around Cross and lifted her off the ground in a massive embrace. Yibanathi and Zanele laughed out loud, loud enough Nkosenye looked over at the kitchen. “What is going on over there?” his voice boomed out and Zanele yelled back “Mind yourself, you big ox! Set the table and don’t you worry about what your betters are doing!” Nkosenye shook his head and turned back to his father and resumed talking.

Nkosenye Family

She reached down and took Cross’s hands in her own and said “You have a family and a home to call your own if you want it, child.”

‘’Indeed I do…it has always been my wish’‘ Cross replied in a strange clear voice’‘ then she pointed a finger at his sister ‘’I hope your brother does not break my heart,he’ll take care of me,honor, protect and love me..dear sister it goes both ways’‘ and with that the female doctor hugged Nomusa with a swift gesture.

At that instant Miriam scratched her head absent minded while oblivious to her gesture My,my… their names are so strange for me to recall hoping it would not bother their brother.

It was not long before Miriam started to feel tired,it had been a long day yet also satisfying, fulfilling and definitely rewarding .All she wanted was to snuggle in bed with Nkosenye.

Yibanathi finally announced dinner was ready. Various roasted and steamed vegetables, different meats in various styles, and drinks were all set around the massive dining table. Flowers scattered here and there made for a bright and appealing setting, and the family all made their way and took their seats. Mthunzi stood at the head of the table by his father and once everyone was seated he began to speak, his deep baritone filling the room.

Cross wondered if they ate like this everyday or on special occasions ,she could not help express her feelings ‘’Oh how delightful!’‘.

“We Zulus call on the Spirits of all our Ancestors from the past, whom did righteousness, in the Name of All. In The Name of The Spirits, watch over all Zulus and all Human Beings on this planet we call Earth and over all Beings of grace and honor. We Zulu call on The Spirits, who are The Source, to bless The Universal Zulu Nation always, to watch over Mother Earth and all the Planets and Universes. To keep us always protected from our enemies, no matter where they are. Oh Spirits, who are The Source, keep us strong and healthy in Mind, Body, and Soul. Keep us on a straight path of righteousness and even if we fall of grace, keep us always searching for Right Knowledge, Right Wisdom, Right Understanding; so we can stand as Gods and Goddesses with Sound Righteousness and Reasoning.”

The doctor wondered if this was their prayer and out of courtesy she lowered her head.

They all shouted once “KANU!” and started passing the food around; and then Mthunzi’s father looked up and smiled at him, placing a hand on his son’s arm. “You do our people proud, my son. And we are so proud of you.” he said with a few tears in his eyes. Nkosenye looked down and smiled. “Thank you, Bawana. I will always try to make sure you can keep that pride.” and then he looked up at the rest of the table and raised his cup. “I wish you, my family, life and joy.” and then he looked at Cross. “And I wish you peace and happiness, my love. From my heart to yours, always.” The sisters and his mother literally squealed with delight and Jabu, one of his brothers, turned and punched Kigo, another brother, in the arm hard enough Kigo’s chair rocked sideways. “I told you they were together! Now wouldn’t you feel stupid if you had asked her to go look at the ‘wildlife’ from your room?!” and the table erupted in laughter. Nkosenye’s voice boomed over the din. “Stupid? Oh, I doubt very much he would have felt anything had my brother done that. My love is quite particular to how people speak to her. I doubt you, Kigo, would have been able to finish your proposal before you were unconscious.” and the family laughed even louder. Even Kigo, whose already dark skin showed a flush of embarrassment around his eyes, smiled and held up his hands in mock surrender. He then looked at Cross down the table from him and shrugged with a look that seemed to say “Hey, can you blame me?” Nkosenye then took his seat next to Miriam and looked at her. “My home is yours. My family welcomes you, and they are yours as well.” and he bent low and kissed her cheek.

Miriam blushed as Nkosenye kissed her in front of everyone, she was not used to such expressions of displaying any intense feelings of deep affection.

‘’I appreciate and cherish your kindness ‘’Cross responded for once in her life lost for words.

Nkosenye placed his hand on hers briefly and smiled at her. It was a smile filled with acceptance, support, and love. “It is yours as long as you wish it.” he said and then released her hand as the food began to make it’s way around the table.

Cross could not remember when she last conducted herself in accordance with the accepted norms without creating a headache for someone.Once she smelt the aroma of cooked food the doctor realized how hungry she was and with good reason having burned so many calories,oh well thanks to Nkosenye she did not end up ripped apart by a pack of hungry Hyenas ..after that thought she gave him her most angelic smile.

Nkosenye smiled back and winked. What followed was a few hours of eating, laughing, stories, and family. Everyone spoke Standard so that Miriam would not feel left out. At one point Nkosenye’s father looked at her and smiled warmly. As the rest of the table talked and interrupted each other and carried on, he stood and walked over to her chair and knelt down on the floor next to her so he could look at her directly. “Dear, if you even want to learn our language, I’m sure you would do well with it. Let me kow. Perhaps while you are here you and I could work on that, if you like.” and then a somewhat confused expression crossed his face. “How long are you here, by the way?”
